I bought dark imperium and know no fear, I have no idea what to buy next. edit: oops i forgot to say I want to expand on my space marines and ignore the death guard for now. I also bought the chaos space marine box from earlier this year with 3 csm, 6 bikes and chaos lord, how would I expand that? I'm fine with my troop choice being csm I know they aren't very good and cultist are better but I already bought them. The new battleforce and csm start collecting both have more csm which I feel I don't need as I probably already have too many.

hmm ok, since you're building up chaos space marines AND space marines, I'd reccomend going with a one stop solution with shadowspear.
https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Shadowspear-EN-2019
buying that will get you the full contents of the CSM and vanguard space marine start collecting boxes, AND get you a nice marine captain and libby to boot. all for a lower price.
that's just my honest next stop. once that's done you'll wanna focus on buffing out your list with big stuff, for Marines I'd suggest maybe a dreadnought and/or some impulsors.

A contemptor dreadnought would be a good addition to either force. Lots of weapons choices. Loyalists seem to prefer double lascannon. Heretics usually go double butcher cannon. Either way it's relatively cheap on points, hits on 2s, and has an invul.
And cultists aren't better than csm. Especially with the new points drop for csm.

You do not mean the Contemptor dread. The loyalist version of that can only be equiped with the Keres pattern Assault Cannon or the Multimelta. You might be talking about the normal Dreadnaught (loyalist) or Hellbrute (chaos).

"Contemptor Dreadnaught" refers to three loyalist datasheets (Contemptor in the Codex, Contemptor-Mortis and Relic Contemptor in Imperial Armour). Both IA Contemptors can be equipped with twin lascannons on one or both arms. Most of the loadouts are Forge World but can be improvised using the plastic one and spare parts.

Ah. Sometimes I forget the FW stuff even exists since pretty much nobody owns any of it locally.
For Loyalist Marines, I'd second Shadow Spear as a good value. Infiltrators will broaden your troop selection (and can stand in for Incursors), the Phobos Captain has some interesting plays since he's the only Marine character with a built-in sniper rifle and most of the special ammo relics in the Codex suppliments seem expressly designed for him, and you can't currently get the Suppressors any other way.
I've had good results out of the Executioner but it's an awful lot of points for something you really want to take at least two of.
I'm hesitant to suggest anything from the old marine line since their future looks dim, but the Vindicator and Whirlwind seldom disappoint me.
Also, I swear by Aggressors and a lot of my regular opponents swear at Aggressors. These boards seem to think their a bad unit though, so your mileage may vary.

Yup. And the plastic one is ugly as feth. Get a fw model in your legion/chapter of choice and it'll run you $35 more with weapons than the plastic one. If you kitbash the lascannons on the plastic one it's actually $1 more than the fw models.

If he's new to 40k, he proably doesn't know what forge world is, etc. let's stick to the basics for now, not act like he's prepping a tourny list

Seriously? Just because he's new you think he can't find the fw link on the gw website?
His choices so far sounds like he's leaning towards chaos. Can't have that can you?
Either way maybe consider a leviathan dreadnought. You can make it loyalist or heretic. Run double butcher/storm cannons. Wreck face. Enjoy.

not without being told about forgeworld, you started talking about contemptor dreads. if I was new I'd go and buy the plastic one from the GW website and wonder what the hell you where talking about.
as for leaning chaos, why the flying feth do you think I'd care? I play both and enjoy both, if he's going to do the same thing? awesome!

Honestly I forgot the plastic one existed because why would anyone go for the inferior model? And I assumed (and yes I know what happens when I do that) that anyone investing money into this hobby would know what fw was.
And I was bored and looking for an argument and apparently so were you.

What about the Apocalypse boxes? Still in stock many places.
The Chaos one is pretty gud, dunno about the SM one, since none of the units in it are "my cup of tea"
