I don't get why people want symbol on 6, not on 1. Not only die is much better balanced if you have symbol on the side opposing six pips, not one, but in 40K, you reroll ones so often being able to tell at a glance what to reroll is a real life saver. Doubly so as a courtesy to your opponent who can clearly see what you're rerolling.

I'm not a big fan of the GW faction dice. I have their Ork dicebut am not sure I would ever use them because they seem way too light being plastic and ? Hollow? I prefer bright yellow chessex with black pips because they are easy to read. I do have dice from the B&C which I like to roll some times but it's a split I don't use just 1 set for a whole game and will trade out one set for another mid game if they seem to roll too bad or get grubby. Or there is a need for just a lot of dice. I don't have enough faction dice to roll out some combats so no point mixing dice. I think I have 66 red gw battle dice from 3rd and 4th edition I use and then the 72 yellow chessex dice.
When the Ork codex came out the other year I was so let down by the models I spent all my saved cash on Ork dice from Q work shop...because I make dumb decisions. Having not used my Orks in over a year I regret my bad investment in fancy Ork dice. Even thought they look really neat.
I don't think I really car for the weight on the GW faction dice.

At this point it's basically convention that the 6 gets the special symbol.
If you really care about the balance of your dice, casino or professional backgammon dice are your only option. They're clear plastic, so you can tell they have no bubbles, and they're machined and the pips are filled with the same density acrylic, giving you a regular cube with uniform density.
They're also fething expensive - I bought a set of 20 backgammon dice for 120 CAD.
Most gaming dice cannot approach being true, as they're injection molded and tumbled in sand to remove mold lines, meaning they often have bubbles you can't see, aren't uniform in shape ( GW's dice are terrible for this), and the inset pips throw the weight off regardless (yes, you have seven pips totalling the opposite sides, but the 1 side is going to be heavier than the 6 side).
It's possible to mitigate some of these issues with injection molded dice - by engineering the pips/numbers to be of equal volume on each side, for example, and not tumbling in sand but manually removing mold lines/sprue, but most companies don't bother because most gamers don't care so long as the bias isn't obvious.

I usually have preferences towards symbols on the 6 because you either failed or did minimum possible damage if you rolled the 1. And the 6 means usually auto success, max damage, death to the false emperor, explosion, feel no pain, successful save, or whatever. So you should be excited to see your preferred symbol pop up most often.

I use my Ork dice, but more for wound counters and stuff like VP simply because when you play Orks you need bucketloads of dice. I guess Orks lucked out with having some of the more legible dice compared to other factions.

I like dice to match my army, but am not a fan of crazy symbols that are not a simple pip or maybe a skull on the 1.
Ultra marine dice would be fine to just be blue with white pips. My son uses the GW ones that just have a skull on the 1. None of this IV or VI nonsense. This isn't Star Wars

Thats what I like about the Custodes dice. With the big skull on the 1 and the Custodes Symbol on the 6 they are very well balanced. And it is very obvious what you have rolled at a glance. Big black forms? 1's. A complex figure? 6's.

I dslike the unique faction dice. They're harder to read.
I have 3 boxes of green with white pips dice from when GW dice came in those dice cubes that looked like dice, plus 16 of each grey and green dice from flames of war. They are easy to read and very plain.

When I see the Ork dice I always think of the miniwargaming batreps they had to take down because they spent 3+ rounds counting the ork symbol as a 6 instead of a 1, it definitely affected the batrep outcome a lot.
I am not a fan of the faction dice I went and got some vortex bright green 12mm dice with black pips, they are super easy to read from across the table and they are smaller so I can roll 30+ at a time.

The DoK dice are the only dice I use for AoS. They're very clear to read and it's such an ingrained habit that the snake mouth is 1 and the sassy morathi is six that I couldn't cheat with them if i wanted to. They also roll very fairly. For the love of the Emperor's Golden La-z-boy, only 1 special symbol on dice please. 1 or 6 it doesn't matter, but PLEASE not both. "Which symbol was the 6 and which was the 1?" is a bad buzzkill. I use chessex custom dice with symbols on the 6s. Tau overwatch is a lot faster when its a game of "count the symbols." Even with Tau Sept its a lot faster when its "symbols+5".

Yikes. That seems dumb given that the two skulls are very clear on which is a 6 and which is a 1. I don't remember seeing those batreps, then again MWG, no offense to them, have been pretty beat by a lot of other competing Batrep youtubers at this point. Personally, I like Tabletop tactics and Skaredcast the most atm.

White Scars dice irritate me to no end.
The "dots" are the red lightning symbols, but the "icon" is the 6 which is a bigger re lightning symbol with the hard to notice at a glance yellow banner in the middle of it.
No idea how many times ive seen them roll what i initially thought was a really bad roll and realize no...thats the 6 icon...that was an insane roll not a bad one.
Even if the Ork ones didnt feel ... off... i wouldnt use them just because of the sheer number i need to roll makes rolling the larger dice difficult.

you're not wrong, MWG has gone down hill a lot most of their videos are terrible now and a lot of their newer staff are boring. I also saw some batreps from 40k in 30 minutes, they are pretty good. MWG makes to many mistakes and sometimes they use dice that are very hard to read.

I use regular dice. I absolutely loathe the new SoB dice.
It's not that hard to put a cool symbol in the place of a 6 and just make the dice in pretty colors.
A handful of some of GW's dice look like they came out of some Cambodian board game. I don't even see where the numbers are on some of them.

Overall I agree, however, if the symbol for 1 is a small skull, it's not that hard to remember it's the 1 even if you have a faction symbol on the 6. A skull is round and therefore can look like a big pip, and skulls mean death, which is often what happens to your guys if you roll a 1. -
