Loved this old Ogryn, much better than any sculpts since. (This one isn't mine)

I really like the old sculpt for Necron Wraiths. The Canoptek is A better sculpt, but I still prefer the design of the old ones.

The 3rd edition Horrors are so cool. They look way more like they are an ever changing blob of limbs and teeth. The new horrors don’t do that for me.

Oh yeah, man, those were fantastic. Everyone flips out for the Diaz Daemonettes but I reckon these Horrors are the best Daemons GW have ever done.

I always thought this guy was super cool, though perhaps needs a powersword over the knife:

and then the RT inquisitor termintor:

though maybe not that colour scheme.

pretty much all the dark angles 2nd ed characters were awesome too

1993!

Tyranid Ravener from (I think) 2005 and Tau XV15 Stealth Suits from 2001 are the closest to "classic" I enjoy the look of.

I think original IG Storm Troopers were 1999, they were pretty lit. Kasrkin were better, but Scions are worse than both.

I guess the Raveners is the only old sculpt that I can say is better than all versions that came before and after.

Good choices, if a touch after the OPs time frame. They're all 3rd edition models though.

Those were great! The new ones represent maybe the greatest drop in quality for any 'updated' sculpt.

Have you seen the new sob repentia squad?

Yes.

But that's pretty much the opposite of "best classic model" or "greatest drop in quality". The new repentia are probably the greatest increase in quality over their previous incarnation.

For the SoB lineup, I'd say the Immolator Tank is probably the greatest downgrade. I'm not a fan of the changes to the Exorcist either [notably the loss of the hull paneling and the burning exhaust stacks], but at least it doesn't look so completely weird.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades!

Oh hell yeah those are rad. I got a bunch off ebay at some point and I still have to put them together.

The old stoic commissar is easily the best one they ever did.

The old Space Wolf Librarian in Terminator armour (still available I think) is a great classic mini.

So, these guys, but my favorite was the second from the left on the top row. Don't ask why, but I thought he was awesome and I still do. That variety among the armor is what I've constantly wanted from Chaos Warriors.

I am also a big fan of Jes' original space wolf sergeant and wolf guard models, especially the long fang sergeant and the bearded wolf guard with bionic leg. And the iron priest.

Also Patriarch on throne.

And the ratskins from necromunda, which are a little problematic now in their depiction of native americans (down to alcohol problems with wildsnake...), were still really nicely design.

While I don't think they're the very best sculpts...the Phoenix Lords, when painted by a stupidly talented person are..pretty phenomenal. And yes, people who can paint like this make me want to quit painting altogether...

I love the Stormtroopers from 1999, sculpted by Mark Bedford. There are a few elements that haven't aged well, but you have to look close. I think they're a perfect blend of stylized and realistic- with a hefty dose of tacticool that matches their fluff.

Ahh I KNEW I'd not made it up, but for some reason that first warlock photo you showed doesn't tend to appear as often as some of the latter ones (and the Lexucanum gallery hasn't got a photo of it either).

I hope you also realise what terrible disaster you are now responsible for!!

No regrets.

I have I think two of each of them. They just have such a cool jedi/warrior monk aesthetic.

It's a look I really hope GW might return too. Smooth domes are cool but painting wise they only benefit people with really good freehand or airbrushes. The gemstones and high detail faces look far more alien and also make for a much easier detail base to paint onto

I'm not sure, I found these for sale on eBay by some Russian commission painter.
