Subject: For new(returning) players, how do you have the Stats for units to hand in games?

Just about ready to pluynge back into actually playing(after buying stuff, painting armies etc).
Both armies are mine, both painted by me.
I have a head full of how to set up and actually play the game......for a 500 point game. How do you suggest the info (units) are kept at hand.
Even for a 500pouint game there seems a lot of rules and info.
I have made the armies on Battlescribe and I know you can print.....but the print comes out at about 5 pages(2 armies, so 10 pages). Is this the best route? My friend wont be researching etc, so its down to me.
Wish there was a way to get compacted unit cards, such as they have in Legion or A song of ice and Fire?(maybe there is....or a better way)?

I use the battlescribe print as a start and then make a set of reference cards. Attached is an example. (Yes I know it is out of date - it is an old file.)

Either screenshot the epubs, photocopy the pages from the codex or use https://buttscri.be/

Thanks for the advice.
I am probably missing something...but wouldnt printing the Battle scribe list and then just cutting it into sections give you the same thing or does your system make it clearer or something?
Im new back to the playing/lists side and trying to make it as easy as possible. Its doubly hard learning the rules myself...painting the 2 armies and having to virtually learn both armies...while my friend just turns up and plays one side......hoping that changes tho. Want to make it as smooth as I can.

Ill take a look thanks

Just tried that Buttscribe thing. Brilliant.
One last question on it....can you have it showing the general army list rules(such as Cadian rules etc) too? (or is it already on there and I missed it)
It dosnt seem to show the reduction in stats from damage too?
Still brilliant though. Thanks

I have a simple army list with unit slots, extra gear, points-all fits on a single page
like so for my 30K list
TROOP
1. tac support squad(10) PF/MB/ X9 volkite culivers -XXX points
then I just make copies from the PDF of the unit entries I have in my army for reference(I have it all memorized but if somebody wants to see it , it's there)-boom done
that's 8 unit types so 8 photocopy pages, simple as that.

I just put little sticky tabs in my Codex so I can find the relevant stuff quickly, and make myself an extra little cheat sheet to remind me of the stuff I frequently forget, e.g. ALL YOUR BOYZ HAVE GRENADES BTW

I find the stats not incredibly difficult to remember; most units'/weapons' stats are easily remembered or deduced in relation to others. I prefer a Battlescribe printout to Codexes just because I tend to field armies that require a bunch of books to use (2-3 Codexes plus Forge World units), if you're doing less strange/complicated armies the Codex is fine for looking up the things you've forgotten.

I usually build my lists in BattleScribe, then copy a text-only list (w/o all the stats etc - just the units, models and options) to Excel and clean it up as my Army List.
Then I set BS back to HTML, set Rules etc to Summary only and then simply copy&paste the tables for the weapons and model stat lines to two more worksheets, clean them up and then I'll grab these two tables, copy & paste them onto the Army List sheet as images (way easier to move them around as images). Then print it to fit on a single sheet.
If there's too much stuff I'll put the stat tables on a separate sheet and print double-sided, so I'm still working with a single sheet at the table.
Takes 10 minutes or so, but worth it (although I'm used to this by now, so probably takes longer initially)
I wish BS had a proper print output. it's utter garbage to the point that I'm convinced Big Wood is behind BattleScribe ;-)

Within a handful of games you shouldn't need to look up anything but the most obscure statlines.
(Wait, what are my riptide's melee stats again?)

I found that exporting the Battlescribe view to html and then printing it at 85%-90% zoom generally cut the pages in half. Buttscribe looks brilliant though.

I have a book.
Said book will have these things called "pages", and if there's a unit I have particular trouble remembering or is different to the rest of the units on the field? A sticky note is affixed to the page with a note of the unit in question.

Just made into a format I like, but only a few changes. So for example the infantry squad will list all the weapons all my squads have, rather than a datacard per squad.

I've had people say that, but it works great.
Also, I don't have to print anything or let someone put grubby mitts on my tablet or phone.
Something that I've been doing more and more lately as well is cutting up the instruction sheets that are included with a unit and laminating them. By doing so, I can make sure that I have a handy copy to throw at someone.

I've known a few amateurs who know what they're doing better than some professionals. The only difference is one is not paid for it and one is.
A while back, in 6th Edition I think it was, I started making my own cards for quick reference and even included a spot to keep track of Wounds and Hull Points with weapon references planned to be on the back. I even included cards for the Chapter Traits and Missions as well. I sized them to be about the same size as face cards and could fit 9 on to a Letter-sized piece of paper (about 22cm x 28cm). They are incredibly outdated at this point, but I enjoyed the challenge of creating them. I think I did some updates for the 7th Edition codex, but I can't remember off hand.
Space Marine Unit Cards, Tactics, and Warlord Traits
Mission Cards and General Warlord Traits
Do note, I am NOT a graphic design artist, and I did this all in Word.

I'm not a new or returning player, and maybe this is a bit of sarcasm.... but my experience with new players has been:
*from across the room* "HEY KATHERINE! WHAT LETS MY LEMAN RUSS SHOOT TWICE?"
or
"Uh, I want to shoot your tank with my devastators, what do I hit on?"
In seriousness, though, other people can only really help you with armies they're familiar with, so I would recommend keeping your codex on hand and looking things up when you need them.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades! |

As I pack up my list ready to go to tournament I write palm cards for each unit.
It's a bit harder in 8th because information is so damn spread out but it helps and I usually don't have to refer back to them because they were such a pain in the ass to make in the first place they're remembered.

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go. |
