Well for now anyway

If you've been following my P&M blog you'll have seen me putting these together since coming back to the hobby, but I think this is the first time I've shared photos of both armies in their entirety.

800 points of Ultramarines (for club night pick-up games):

1500 points of Chaos Knights:

It's taken 18 months (and I think I've sunk about £700 into the hobby for rules, miniatures, paints and gaming accessories), but I'm really pleased with what I've achieved, especially as I'd not played since 1st edition and I'd never painted before.

I'm playing about once a month now, and next weekend will be the first outing for all the knights together

Nice work!

For chaos knights they seem pretty clean. They could pass for loyalists if they wanted.

Ultras are looking sharp. Need more of them though! Get them some serious AV firepower so the knights won’t bully them on the shelf.

Yep, the Chaos Knights are very clean - I've not added anything specific. In fact they don't even have all the small railings etc on them because I want them to be a bit more robust to transport to games. All of these miniatures are for gaming and actually live in cases at home, so no shelf bullying takes place!

I'm not sure what I'll get next. You're right that the Ultramarines need bolstering, but do I start to move away from my nostalgia marines to something more competitive? On the other hand I do like the look of the new Knight Desecrator model, which would bring some much needed Chaos to the Chaos Knights. I guess half of me is waiting to see what GW releases this year...

800 points seems an odd number for the Ultras but they look great!

This line of reasoning broke 7th edition in Fantasy. The books should be as equal as possible, even a theoretical "Codex: Squirrels with Crustacean allies" should have a fair chance to beat "Codex: God".

- Cost? FW models cost more? Because Thudd guns are more expensive than Wraithknights and Riptides. Nope, not a good argument. This is an expensive game. We play it knowing that, and also knowing that, realistically, it's cheaper than hookers and blow.

Yeah it's the local club night mandated points value for pick-up games.

It also meant I could go full-nostalgia and build a small battalion made up of units that were all around in 1st edition.

“Finished armies” ?

No such thing!

I’ve been building my army for the last 30 years, and God Emperor willing, I’ll be working on it for the next 30+. When I do finally find a way to martyr myself in His service, my son can take up the mantle of painting Ultramarines. It will give him a break from painting Salamanders.

That said, I keep meaning to get everyone off the shelf for a group shot. Lot of work to do that though. One thing holding my back is lack of terrain. I’d rather not just do an “army on table” shot, but have a little interest built up along the edges.

Well my initial aim was 800 points of Ultramarines and 1500 points of Chaos Knights, all fully painted and WYSIWYG. In terms of that brief, these are 'finished' (for now).

Just wait, you will have a battle company and a full knight household on the shelf before you know it.

Nothing quite gives old school vibes as a small Ultramarines army. This could almost be the box cover of an old army set.

Lovely, man

The UM look great! The Knights I kinda want to see a little more variation or character on. But overall, looking solid. Nicely done!

my biggest problem with the knights is you'd never know they where chaos at a glimpse.

Okay, so there are new additions to both armies now - a Terminator Squad and a Knight Desecrator (which also comes with a Chaos Knights transfer sheet with enough transfers for the other knights too). The Ultramarines are up to 1000 points, and the Chaos Knights are up to 1800 points. I just need to get building and painting now...
