And out of further curiosity, how do Rune Priests power their sorcery when not on Fenris?

GW could easily write an actual answer but that would be hard.

Weather spirits that seem Fenrisian because their powers are being channeled through a heaping helping of Fenrisian safety measures. Fluff wise the only Rune Priest who can do more than call down a bit of fog by their lonesome is Njal Stormcaller - who is one of the most powerful psykers in the Imperium but compared to an average Thousand Son sorcerer little more than a peddler of cheap tricks, even from within his own body.

From what I’ve read of Perils of the Warp the whole concept is more often than not psychic backlash on some poor sucker who lost focus trying to manipulate the warp and that backlash sometimes draws daemons rather than daemons causing the backlash.
It’s like the Shadow in the Warp being theorised as a Tyrannid hive mind consciousness, all their chattering drives psykers to distraction as they try to manipulate warp energies and makes them peril.

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go.

Yeah, but then we wouldn’t have the “leave Britney alone guy” joining Dakka and crying “Leave Russ Alone!” with mascara running down his face while the rest of us make fun of his fleas. I mean hypocrisy.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

I thought the council of Ikaea - sorry, Nikaea - forbade the use of sorcery, not psychic powers, and it's well established that Magnus and the 1K Sons delved into sorcery well beyond the mere use of psychic powers.

Pretty sure it was psychic powers. After the council everyone was told to stop using their librarians.

Maybe it's old canon. Another bad retcon to lay at the feet of the terrible HH series.

Council of Nikea starts as a discussion about the Librarius Conclaves and the lines that they’re crossing but also ends with a vote on the use of Psykers with a few exceptions.

Russ wants the Thousand Sons stopped because he believes the Thousand Sons have dealings with daemons - he is right and the Thousand Sons do have dealings with daemons but what Russ actually witnessed was the Flesh Change.

Mortarion hates Psykers in general but calls Magnus out specifically as a “Sorcerer’ and points out that Magnus is going down a dangerous path with it.

Corax and Dorn hate all Psykers.

Russ appeals to Khan to admit that the Librarius Conclaves are using dangerous practices and that Lightning and Rune Priests do things safely. While acknowledging the difference Kahn is a co-founder of the Librarius Conclaves so his vote still goes to keeping them.

Magnus tried to be clever and refuses to admit a difference to get more votes to his side, calling everyone against his view superstitious cowards and other unpleasant descriptions, however, he only succeeds in bringing all Psykers into the vote as the same thing.

A whole heap of gak hits the proverbial fan with sleeper agents being uncovered and daemons masquerading as Thousand Sons Librarians.

The final decree of the Emperor is Librarius Conclaves are to be disbanded while Astropaths and Navigators are the only Psykers to be employed by Space Marines.

Magnus bows the knee but never follows through.

Kahn obeys but pulls out the Lightning Priests aren’t Librarians loophole.

Sanguinius being Sanguinius is the only Primarch in favour of keeping the Librarius Conclaves who actually abides by the Emperor’s edict.

Russ more or less obeys the edict and removes the Space Wolves Librarius Conclave but also uses the same loophole as Kahn in keeping his Priests who wrote their practices off as a combination of Astropathy and Navigator disciplines and considering that Russ was firm friends with the head of the Navigator Family Belisarius it is quite possible that he had some serious backing in his claims that Rune Priests weren’t Librarians.

Corax, Dorn and Mortarion quite happily kick whatever is left of their Librarius Conclaves to the curb and push all their Psykers back into rank and file.

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go.
