I kind of like this. More substance, less fluff. I also like multiple factions being packaged together in theory, if only they hadn't managed to package the 5 factions I play in 5 separate books!
I don't like having to buy campaign books at all, so it's feels less like a waste of money if it at least has a lot of rules in it and isn't just a single datasheet for something I will inevitably feel like I need to use.

On the other hand, I'd still rather have new codecies with new miniatures at a slower pace than campaign splatbooks rolled out monthly. I can wait a few years for any given faction to get it's buffs and stuff [after all, I have 5], especially if the few years wait would come with a new kit or two.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades!

fluff though needs to be worth reading, a well written campaign book is one that has value long after the edition has changed for the story it tells

Play every faction. Every book becomes useful.

I'll take that over a Codex being overridden within 18/24 months.

That is the real issue, some people don't mind the endless burn and churn.

To be honest though, if I'd been gone for awhile and someone told me I'd need like 3 books just to have all the stuff for my 1 faction, my eyes would glaze over and I'd really ponder a different game to pick back up.

Even if you ignore the fact it gets costly, and most seem to, it becomes hard to keep track of what rule is in what book and what does what and then boundless FAQs and erratas.

If I was a new player I'd be totally lost with what to do. Foolish would I be to think I need only my codex. I get what they were trying to do with this but this is definite book fatigue if you got more than one faction. For me i'm even ignoring some factions and figure I'll just leave them be for awhile so I don't need to worry about some of these releases.

I'd eat my own paints if this would indeed be the case, and i am at a point where i ain't paying anymore for GW's shoddy rules.

It's a tough call. I'd be very surprised if we see every faction get another codex before a new edition drops. It's easy to see why Marines got their 2.0 and supplements. They're the poster boys of the game, they got a similar thing in 6/7th (I forget which) with the Angels of Death and other supplements, and they just had a large model release that needed rules support beyond just the pamphlets in the box.

The really confusing thing to me is the Chaos Marines 2.0 book. All it did was update some errata and tie in a couple of new releases. At the time, I thought maybe we'd see each codex re-released in the same way - no major changes, but updated to reflect the FAQ/errata changes that had come since release. For some reason, this didn't happen, even though I for one would be happy to buy a second version of a codex if it meant I didn't have to reference PDFs every time I play.

As for what's planned after Psychic Awakening, it's hard to say. The whole PA campaign (as in marketing campaign, not a lore campaign) has surely been a huge success so far, with multiple new release tie-ins and enough rules to provide everyone with plenty of reasons to buy more models. I think we're either looking at selected codex releases for factions that have significant model releases to tie in with (perhaps Admech, from what we've seen), or maybe a new edition.

If the latter is the case, I would expect it to be more like the incremental changes we saw from 5/6/7th edition, rather than a complete rework like 8th was. I would be very surprised if GW immediately invalidated 20 codexes, 6 supplements, 2 campaign books and however many Psychic Awakening books we end up with.

This isn't to say anything of the Forge World rules re-works we're expecting, either. Whilst these are unlikely to many model tie-ins (they're updated of the index rules for existing models), it's further proof that GW is committed to this edition for the time being.

This. These books could include pages of maps overlayed with a hex grid which you can scan and print out to have a ready to go campaign map, along with victory conditions for the forces involved, bonuses for holding certain areas of the map (such as spaceports, factories, cities), recommended battle layouts for battles in important areas, rules for units gaining experience as they fight in battles, rules for replacing losses etc.

You can build a lot of crunch which isn't just "this chapter tactic gives me +1 to X". It's a shame that GW doesn't employ anyone who has that kind of imagination and competence, or it doesn't let them do good work.

Actual map-based campaign rules as well. And not in an Urban Conquest manner.

Considering how bad what I read was I think it's better they don't write lore...

Not sure dozens of pages of the same old reprinted Marine datsheets is eactly enthralling but god forbid mentioning that certain Marine subfaction players simply using the mian Codex with about a page of notes for specific changes... I mean they would have to buy two books - oh wait they still have to.....

Shield of Baal had great artowrk, not a bad story and lots going on - the most recent so called campaigns - not so much...

Ii like these format. I do wish the PA books had at least 100 pages. Needs a bit more flufff and a bit more campaign feel.

Not sure why everyone complains about the cost of buying new books. Literally as all the rules are spoiled on social media about a week before release date anyway. Facebook, youtube, etc...
So if you don't want yo spend money, you don't have to.
....i even doubt the "needing it for a tourny" as its quite impractical to carry around an 80page hardback book for 2-6 pages of rules. And of those 2-6 pages your particular list uses about half a page of those rules.
And then you got like 2+ more books to carry around?

I'm coming back to 40k after playing The Ninth Age fantasy game for tournies. Free rules in PDF format = so nice.
I'm amazed that the mindset of GW players is still about having to "buy rules".
I still buy a few GW books. But I buy it for collecting. To read through. If GW doesn't have interesting book with fluff, pics, etc... Then I don't buy it.
....this also leads me to skip editions as GW likes to copypaste most of the content of a codex. Kinda lazy if I might say so. But after 2-3 editions there seems to be enough new content for me to buy a new book.

Anyway, this is a luxury industry driven solely by the demand of the consumer. If you don't buy then GW will put some more effort into it.

Heh, GW even experimented with giving free rules, and letting the community step up and write the complex stuff. But AoS sales plummeted so they scrapped that idea for 40k. ...sorta. Every box comes with a data sheet but the players demand updated printed rules from the company.

good for you, but it doesn't matter much, if you know the rules or have them as a pdf, if the store you play at requires you to own the book to use the rules.

From what I was told about AoS sales being low, is that they were low, because GW was trying to sell armies without points. Then yeah, if PA had no rules and were for narrative games only, they wouldn't sell either. But when you can't really play GK without PA4, there is not buying option.

If you have to kill, then kill in the best manner. If you slaughter, then slaughter in the best manner. Let one of you sharpen his knife so his animal feels no pain.
