On the Warhammer Community page, the reader sees that they are trying to "liberate" themselves, but beyond that what exactly are they trying to accomplish? What exactly are they trying to liberate themselves from? Do they know that they will be absorbed by the Tyranids? If so, do they want to be absorbed by the Tyranids?

They're basically a revolutionary doomsday cult.

They believe what ever culture they emerge in is bad and corrupted. They believe that their only true salvation will come from the sky Gods that will come when they are worthy.

The psychic hold they are under makes sure that they truly believe this to a degree far beyond brain washing.

At least, that what they used to be like. I don't know if the new army is still the same

Sort of - they have some vague but compelling religious beliefs that the star gods will come down and transform them.....they don't know they will be eaten.....

Even the purebred Genestealers have their free will overidden when the fleet arrives.

Yeah they are basically a big doomsday cult. They want take control and await the arrival of the star gods. In recent novels I read, they were unaware that the star gods were actually going to eat them, they thought they were salvation. I’m sure in older fluff though they happily lined up to jump into digestion pools. I can’t find any references for this fluff with my cursory search however.

They're trying to liberate themselves from the yoke of Imperial oppression, presumably (in most cases). As Helle notes above, they believe whatever culture they exist in is wrong, however.

As far as I know they're unaware that they're going to be eaten by Tyranids, believing the star children to offer "salvation". From what I gather, when they are about to be consumed, they are filled with horror and desperately try to fight against it, although it's often too late.

Genestealer cults are basically a means by which the Tyranids use agents to undermine the infrastructure and population and even military of an Imperial (human) world. Once begun the cult develops into a standard tiered system whereby the vast majority see it as a means to rebel and rise up against oppression . Blessed by the star-gods with mutations and enhanced abilities they are twisted and steadily corrupted.

It will have multiple layers from regular people who believe, to mutations, to several generations of bred stealers to purestrain genestealers.

Their overall goal is to cause chaos and take over the world through infiltration and terrorist activities. Typically culminating in a massive uprising. This latter aspect will often pair itself to the arrival of a Tyranid fleet. So that when the fleet attacks its opposition is already divided and at war.

It should be noted that as the cults vast body of members don't know what the Tyranids are; they have been known to fight the Tyranids when they arrive. Since they are not under the sway of the Hive Mind, but also suddenly realise that their cult that was throwing off the shackles of Imperial life (basically slavery -esp for the bulk of the working classes); is actually going to eat them.

The Patriarchs of the cult are sometimes saved by the Hive Mind and can be transported to other worlds. So this sets the seed that the upper most ranks of the cult are often aware of their purpose in life. There's also a short story that the Tyranids are now taking some of the Patriarchs to the huge planet that Leviathan is building and that some interaction with that structure helps enhance the Patriarchs - though we've yet no real details beyond that.

Some don't always fight back, some cults know that the Tyranids will kill them and they seem kinda excited about it. The new Codex expanded greatly on how some cults react and how sometimes the Tyranids just never turn up so they continue to expand, taking over entire sectors. Also the hive mind is doing something weird with the GSC through the Tiamet hive fleet. GSC have a pilgrim world now apparently.

Well.

The cult? As in the Hybrids and Brood Brothers?

To overthrow whatever political structure exists.

The Patriarch? To grow his brood large enough that their collective psychic consciousness forms a beacon bright enough that some for of Hive Fleet turns up to scoff the delightfully tenderised sweet meats.

Of all the force of 40k, Genestealer Cults are absolutely the embodiment of nihilism. Because they cannot, ever, win.

The Patriarch is also unaware of their own purpose, with the beacon being formed unconsciously. When the Hive Fleet shows up, the individual consciousness of the Patriarch is subsumed within the Hive Mind again, and the telepathic bond between members of the GSC is severed just as if the Patriarch had been killed.

I agree the GSC is a tragic faction in that they are pretty much destined to be killed, even if they win in their uprising. The only edge case really given is if the Hive Fleet fails to show up, or the individual GSC member is involved in seeding the cult to a new planet (and survives to help establish the new cult). However even in those cases it is unfulfilling for them as they exist in unfulfilled longing for the arrival of their gods.

I'm not 100% sure, but from what I remember, the stuff relating to Genestealer Oracles came out after the Tyranid fluff. A Genestealer cult turning to Chaos was an aberration rather than the norm, and was intoduced in WD as an alternative option.

That said, it's almost certainly dead fluff.

Considering their recent dex mentions a gsc cult drifting into nurgles Garden and starting to Serve him i am unsure about that.

Large parts of the cult are typically not linked to the Hive Mind. The bulk of any Genestealer Cult might be regular humans or only possessed of slight mutation to their bodies. Their primary intention is to remain hidden as long as possible and then cause an uprising within the host species (humans) race on the planet. By keeping the bulk of their number "normal" it reduces the chances of their activities being detected.

Remember many Imperial worlds are pretty nasty, especially if you're a working/slave or even middle class citizen. People treated like machines to produce for the warmachine and the might of the Imperium. Miners and builders - the ranks of the cult are swelled by the downtrodden looking for some kind of uplift. Something more real than the mystical Emperor who has not heeded their prayers and has left them to toil and struggle on a horrible world under cruel overlords.

This is why I noted that sometimes the cult will end up divided itself once the actual Swarm arrives at the host world. Of course by that point its done its job; its weakened the planetary defences; crippled production; opened the gates and poisoned the water. It's caused massive disruption which hinders the ability of the world to protect itself. They would cut communications to help isolate the world. A smart cult might even work to get into the upper tiers of society so that they can poison other worlds against them; fragment alliances and segment the local level organisation so that when the Swarm arrives the world is on its own. Easy pickings.

Of course there are tales of systems where the Cult arises too far to call to the Hive Fleets; or at least too far for the Swarm to dedicate resources toward them. As a result they continue to grow and infect. In theory reaching a point where they can take over and start to carry the message to other worlds. Like a disease spreading deep within the body of the Imperium - weakening its resolve to stand against the Tyranids.

I'm just going off the earlier background.

Originally the cult was composed only of brood brothers and hybrids.

All of them were under the sway of the patriarch's psychic dominion. Brood brothers were specifically under the sway of their offspring as well. They felt compelled to protect them because the genetic infection they received to make them capable of producing hybrids also connected them to the Gestalt of the patriarch's mini hive Mind.

So at no point was a cult member part of the cult with any free will. The reason they took so long to fester is because it took a while for them to breed large enough numbers to become a proper threat.

There are definitely citizens under the influence of the cult who are acting out its directives without the knowledge that they're working for genestealers, and without being mind-controlled by the cult.

The bomb manufacturer in Voice of Experience is just convinced he's part of an underground revolutionary movement; he doesn't have any clue he's working for tyranid infiltrators.

As to the original question: the ultimate goals of the genestealer cultists are just to destabilize the planet they live on to weaken resistance to the approaching hive fleets, and to mask their presence until the hive fleet arrives, since the larger they grow the greater the psychic beacon they send out becomes.

The GSC don't usually REALIZE this, at least not in full. Their actual goals will vary by their specific cult. Some just believe they are mutants who are fighting for their freedom from a persecutory tyranny. Some believe they are the children of star gods that will come to liberate them some day. Some may even mistakenly believe they are chaos cultists. A few may even be willing participants, trying to use the mutations and connections of the cult for world domination, unaware that they will fall under the sway of the Hive Mind if/when they attract its attention.

And it's quite likely that whatever the physical influence from the gene-stealers is, it's mind altering enough to predispose them to those behaviors (so that doing so feels "rational" to them).

Once again, the flexibility of GW's source material gives us a lot to work with.

Fluff wise, I was in the process of creating a hive fleet that specialized in using vanguard organisms. Their practice was to return patriarchs to broodlord status once the hivemind drew close enough to reassert itself. Genestealer purestrains would also be returned to the hive fleet.

Purestrains are only chosen for vanguard duty after first serving under a broodlord with Patriarchal experience. Each squad would be lead by and elder Purestrain- one who had previously served in a cult.

Any vanguard organism gets freewill and memory back once it leaves the range of the hivemind once more.

The elite characters of the Cult are given the choice to flee; if they do so, they are permitted a single unit as a bodyguard, and they leave the planet just prior to the arrival of the Shadow in the Warp. Their purpose is to reunite with other vanguard forces to provide additional expertise and experience to another fledgling cult, which might otherwise not reach maturity.

Originally, all of this was just fluff. But now that PA is here, I think there are rules for both custom fleets and custom cults, and I may be able to find rules that better suit the armies in my head.

So, Genestealer Cults are a favorite faction of mine, and I've tried to read up on as much lore as possible over the years, so bear with me while I try to explain things from the bottom up.

First you need to know a bit about Genestealers themselves, because they are typically the origin of every cult (there are exceptions but it's not the norm), and it helps explain why cultists act the way they do. Genestealers have two distinct "personalities" (for lack of a better term) depending on whether they are connected or separated from the Hive Mind. While controlled by the Hive Mind, they act as the usual Tyranid vanguard assault organisms that you've heard about. They're led by a Broodlord, but they're all directed by the Hive Mind, so the Broodlord acts more like a synapse conduit than a completely independent leader (though it can function as one when needed). Genestealers that are separated from the Hive Mind's influence, and those that are produced from cults, are referred to as Purestrains. These genestealers initially behave more like a pack of wolves than shock troops, have about the same intelligence, and are also connected to one-another through a telepathic link called the Broodmind, which is essentially just a smaller independent version of the Hive Mind — this is important for later.

There are innumerable ways for a genestealer infestation to begin, but it almost always starts with a very small number of genestealers (sometimes even 1) infiltrating a human city, ship, space station, or other large population zone. Purestrains will only attempt to start a cult if they sense there are enough prey organisms for a cult to thrive. When they arrive, Purestrains will spend days or weeks learning about their new hunting grounds before they make their first move — which is to infect someone, rather than kill them — because somehow they know that killing people will draw unwanted attention. The genestealer infection — referred to as the Genestealer Curse — isn't completely understood, but we know the gist of its effects and transmission. A genestealer's tongue has a barbed ovipositor on it like a wasp stinger — but instead of venom, it injects tyranid genetic material into the host — usually through the neck, wrist, arm, or somewhere inconspicuous. An infected human has no visible symptoms, and can act completely normal. From what I've read, the only way to check if someone has the Genestealer Curse is to run their DNA through a special gene-scanner that is set up to detect the genetic material. There is no known cure for the Genestealer Curse, and a single infected survivor can begin a new infestation even if the entirety of his cult was killed.

The genetic material subtlety changes the host's DNA to cause the following effects:
  • It makes the host forget encountering and being infected by a genestealer by inducing amnesia for the past hour or longer.
  • It psychically enslaves the host to the genestealer's Broodmind, although the initial hosts are unaware of this connection because the Patriarch hasn't matured yet. In some cases, hosts never become aware of the connection.
  • This psychic domination also changes the host's perception of genestealers and the Tyranid race. Think about the way imperial citizens revere Space Marine Primarchs, the sons of their God-Emperor — that is how infected humans view genestealers, which is why they are worshiped as children of the gods. The Genestealer Curse literally forces you to think of Tyranids as god-like figures, another reason why cultists are so religiously devoted.
  • If a human gets pregnant after being infected, that child will be a Genestealer Hybrid — and the curse turns the host's sexual drive up to '11' to expedite the process. The infection can also be spread via sex, so it's basically an STD.

  • Now up until this point, there was no leader or alpha organism in the pack of purestrains, they were all considered equals. The first genestealer to infect someone in a new population zone will trigger an evolutionary adaptation that gradually turns it into a Patriarch, the leader of a Genestealer Cult. The Patriarch assumes control of genestealers from its brood, and has a direct psychic link to every infected human and genestealer hybrid. The Patriarch's power and intelligence increases with every new person that joins the Broodmind, and they tend to develop human-like personalities as their cult grows in size. To me, this makes Patriarch's interesting characters that can be radically different from one-another. They all have one common driving factor though: to grow their cult as large as possible and spread it to every corner of the galaxy in preparation for the arrival of their gods: the Tyranid Hive Fleets. Every action they take is to further that goal in some form.

The Tyranid Hive Mind has a different goal though: A genestealer cult creates a psychic signal that becomes more powerful as the cult grows in size, and that signal acts as a giant dinner bell for a Tyranid Hive Fleet which basically shouts "hey, we have a planet full of biomass ready for consumption here". A natural side-effect of a Genestealer Cult overtaking a planet is that there will be no resistance to the Tyranids, so the Hive Fleet won't have to expend its biomass fighting a war.

A quick note about the lifecycle of hybrids and purestrain genestealers:
The first child of an infected human will be a 1st generation hybrid that will grow up to look just like a human-sized genestealer. When that hybrid infects someone, that person's child will be a 2nd generation hybrid, which looks very similar to a genestealer but has human-shaped facial features and can actually speak the language of its parents. That hybrid's offspring will in-turn be a 3rd generation hybrid, which looks like a hunched-over human mutant, some still have 3 arms, others only have 2. The final, 4th generation hybrid looks just like an ordinary human but with a ridged forehead — although some 4th-gen hybrids are actually indistinguishable from normal humans. 4th-gens can either infect humans or have children naturally — but rather than hybrid children, these create a new batch of Purestrain Genestealers — and the cycle repeats. Hybrids grow about twice as fast as a normal human, but it can still take decades for a cult to grow large enough to overthrow a planet.

It's important to realize the distinction between hybrids and infected people. Infected humans are known as Brood Brothers, and the only difference between us and them is the Genestealer Curse. Hybrids are entirely different creatures, as you can see there are many different types, but they all have Tyranid blood flowing through their veins and are much more directly connected to the Patriarch. Both brood brothers and hybrids are psychically bound to the Broodmind — but they aren't mindless slaves. They all have independent thoughts and feelings and typically act as if they had a free will — although they are utterly devoted to the Patriarch and their cult. The Magus and Patriarch can directly control people who are connected to the Broodmind, but this usually only happens when necessary — remember a cult can have millions of people in it — the Patriarch might be omnipresent but it doesn't have the willpower to directly control all of them all of the time.

Now, with that background in mind, what are the Cultists trying to liberate themselves from? That answer is simple: the oppression of those who seek to stop a Genestealer Cult from growing and spreading. The cult wants to be free to carry out the will of their Patriarch, and they'll fight to conquer anyone who would deny them that. The Patriarch and Magus are masters of the human psyche, and will exploit human weaknesses to make people join their cause. They offer salvation to the masses through their new religion, they offer freedom for the working class against their elite rulers, they make their cult look like the heroes of a new revolution. Many people aren't even aware that the revolution is being led by genestealers, and while they may fight for various different reasons, the end result will be something that furthers the goals of the Cult.

The ironic thing is that Genestealer Cult society actually is as close to a Utopia as it gets in the 40k universe. You have humans and xenos all working together For the Greater Good (of the Genestealer Cult). The cult wants everyone to start a family and prosper. There is no infighting among cultists, they don't have cutthroat power struggles, and they aren't trying to screw eachother over for a percentage. It's kind of an interesting concept.

"Do they know that they will be absorbed by the Tyranids?"

The typical Genestealer Cult does not know that it will be absorbed by the Tyranids, at least not the way it actually happens — all they know is that they will experience some Rapture-level event where they are freed to join their Star Gods. Obviously the interpretation of that can vary widely, but its suffice to say being eaten alive is not what they are expecting. Which brings us to the next part:

"If so, do they want to be absorbed by the Tyranids?"

The answer to this is complicated, because it's not fully explained. Interestingly, when a Hive Fleet is very close, the Purestrain Genestealers in a cult will suddenly have an instinct to leave the planet! While this might seem like an act of self-preservation, it has an alternate role: When humans see a hive fleet approaching, many will attempt to escape by flying away on ships. The Purestrains will hide in these ships, and consequently be taken to a new population zone to begin a new Genestealer Cult as their current one is devoured by Tyranids.

The Patriarch doesn't seem to have that instinct though, and he generally remains on the planet while the Hive Fleet arrives. Remember when I said that the Broodmind was separate from the Hivemind? Well the two cannot continue to coexist, and so the broodmind is eventually overtaken by the Hivemind, which causes chaos amongst the Genestealer cult. Based on the novels, this is not an instantaneous process, and the Patriarch slowly loses its free will until it once again becomes just another mindless organism as part of the Hivemind. When that happens, the link between the Patriarch and its cult is shattered.

Now this part is speculation on my end, but is generally supported by the lore: I believe that the Brood Brothers and the Hybrids have very different feelings about the Tyranids once the Broodmind is gone.

The genestealer Hybrids continue to be overjoyed at the arrival of their Gods — being part-Tyranid themselves, they can likely hear the song of the Hivemind. These are the cultists you hear about marching into the digestion pools hand-in-hand, the ones that freely offer themselves to be devoured by Tyranid feeder-organisms, the people that remain unfazed by the oncoming horde of teeth, claws, and chitin.

The infected humans are a different story. Remember that brood brothers are only connected to the cult via the Broodmind — once the Broodmind is gone, the psychic domination is also gone. These are the people you read about who suddenly realize everything they've believed was a lie, those who can finally see the Tyranids for the ravenous monsters they truly are, the one's who kill themselves because of the atrocities they've committed, and generally the people who definitely do not want to be absorbed into biomass. There will surely be a few crazy people that will hold onto their beliefs even after the psychic link is broken, but I think they are the exception rather than the norm.

Anyways, this was a bit of a rant hah, but I hope you enjoyed the info

The cultists who are hypnoticed are mind controlled. The rest do not have perfect information. They either look the other way for favours, are full blown revolutionaries beliving in the cause.

I think the best comparison are cultists in cosmic horror stories. They are often doomsday cults bringing on their own destruction.

There are some minor differenses between GSC and Chaos cults. Genstealers are often revolutilnaries or brainwashed. Chaos cultists tend to get corupted at some point. But chaos cultists can pass through the needles eye and become demon princes. In theory at least. For GSC there is no such reward. The only reward is the work itself. :-)

That's the thing, chaos is now such a huge known quantity that it's not really all that scary anymore. GSC and the hive mind? They still have that cosmic horror, and let's not forget the weird occurrences in the codex as well aka Tiamet and the time the hive mind let the GSC hang out with it.

    The Heart of the Voidbrood

After the worldwide invasion of the agri world Taurensi IX, during which a vast swarm of Tyranids descended to annihilate the planet’s Astra Militarum defenders, the Hive Mind’s creatures begin to consume the planet – but do not turn upon the Genestealer Cultists who helped prepare the way for their conquest. Perhaps the strange departure from the Tyranid consumption modus is due to a psychic imperative from the cult’s Patriarch, or perhaps it can be traced to a flaring of the Cicatrix Maledictum high above – but to the cultists themselves, it is simply another aspect of their divine ascension. They take to the skies in bulk freighters alongside the vast, sky-spanning bio-ships of the hive fleet, and are ignored entirely by the Tyranids, much as the tiny scavenger-fish is ignored by the goreshark with which it shares a symbiotic bond. The rest of the Taurensi System is conquered by an invasion of zealous, frothing Genestealer Cultists and the trillions-strong swarms of the Tyranids that they think of as their allies – when in truth, the synapse creatures of the Tyranid hordes see the cultists as little more than ambulatory biomass to be consumed whenever the need arises.

That GSC got pretty lucky I would say.

not all cults operate in the same way.

Many (especially the larger, multiworld cults) understand that the tyranids consume the worlds they come to, and they adopt a nomadic lifestyle acting as heralds of the star gods. Many, many more believe only in vague ideals of liberation from the yoke of imperial rule, and don't understand that the star gods are massive world-eating bug dinosaurs.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"
