Bit of a light-hearted poll, but I've noticed that some players don't care at all what direction their infantry models are facing when they set them up. For my part, I wish I could be less of an obsessive perfectionist, but I just cannot stand models that face in a random direction. They should be looking the enemy in the eyes, dammit!
This is not a thread for judging people. I'm just curious.

Of course, it just looks weird otherwise.
I would never touch an opponent's models though, that is not very nice.

It would irritate me no end if someone else lined them up just however, but I wouldn't grab anyone else's minis without explicit permission.

For infantry, I usually let them sit wherever I happen to put them. The only time I'll adjust my models is when I'm going in for a sick action shot on the table, and my friends/opponents will do the same.

It depends. If I'm using a five-model unit they're usually all facing the right direction, if I'm using a twenty-model unit they may not be.

Yes, if you are going to spend time building, painting, and playing with toys soldiers at least take the time to have some immersion in the battle.

I voted nah though it depends on the unit. 30 model unit of cultists? Whatever. 10 man unit of terminators? Ok let's point them at what should die.

I now have this strange urge to play a game where I line up every single one of my miniatures so that they have their backs to the enemy.

Generally yes, I'll have my guys pointing the right way. The only exception is where there's a mechanical reason not to (e.g. fitting Hormagaunts in to combat)

Exactly - or when its practical. Typically for a big unit moving them all perfectly would be a pain so some facing a bit the wrong way is ok for the practical playing of the game.
Like other's said what's the point of building and painting the models if you then face them the wrong way around

Generally, yes, if I'm going to pick up a miniature and move it, I'll face it in the general direction it's going. I may adjust some facings a bit if I'm taking a picture mid-game. Does it bug me if they're not exact? No. It would be odd though to pick up a miniature and intentionally place it facing another direction...
I also play with painted miniatures so I'm not picking up a handful of grey plastic orks and shoveling them forward into a pile or something. I think we've all seen the "ork boyz in a ziplock bag" thing...so it depends on your play style.

I do it with my models, the dice god seems to think that’s a wise idea too! On the models turned away, maybe they’re checking their six for ambushes, or they wet their pants and about to run away..

I usually start them out pointing in mostly the right direction... but I'm not concerned about it after the game starts. If I'm moving a blob of 20 or more Guardsmen at a time, I might care about the Heavy, Special, and Sergeant models but after that? Pfft.
If the game had a facing *mechanic* then I would care, of course, but it doesn't.

I often just place them however when I'm moving, especially if I'm in a hurry, but I often notice myself fixing their facig whenever I'm sitting around waiting for the opponent to do something. I like to crack jokes like "dammit Bob, the bloodthirster is that way, no wonder you missed!"
Honestly it's just an aesthetic thing but it does make the table look better

I generally do, but hordes tend to get a bit off over time and fixing it isn't high on my priority list mid-game (and a couple of boyz facing the wrong direction seems fine, they may just be having a go at a neighbor). Normal sized units, tanks, characters, etc. get rotated to face the enemy as things go on, though.
Tyranids are another matter, as just getting their troops into a cohesive unit can be a challenge. Horms do a lot of butt-first charging and my genestealers inevitably end up in some sort of alternating formation just so they won't grab onto each other like a barrel of monkeys when I go to pick one up.

I set them up usually facing the right way, but then only continue to care about their facing if I could make/break LOS by rotating them.
Especially when the clock runs down, I'll start to move towards "move one model carefully, move the rest as a blob and stand them up around him", and there will be lots of people facing away from the enemy.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades! |
