New to this whole painting malarkey and just applied a wash of Agrax Earthshade (I think) and it has dried with the shade but with a shiny effect. I'm guessing this shouldn't be the case, so again, I'm guessing I've done something wrong. Is it that I've not shaken the paint well enough or some other beginners mistake?

Thanks

Did you use the gloss version of Agrax?

Is it Agrax Earthshade GLOSS?

There's two kinds; one that dries rather dirty, and another that dries shiny. I suspect you accidentally picked up the latter.

Nonetheless I have a bottle of carborough crimson SHADE that behaves similarly. I'm a bit suspicious that it might be mislabeled.

Also sometimes if one uses really far too much shade and don't take care to spread it (not that anyone particular ever did this *cough*), it can puddle up and be a bit glossy.

Usually it should be able to just slab some matte medium like citadels Lahmian Medium on it

It doesn't have to be the gloss version to get a shiny result. Like the poster above me said, that sometimes happens if you go overboard and simply use too much.
It's happened to me.

Or you're using the gloss version. lol.

Thanks guys

Tried it again on another model, gave it a really good shake and it worked fine, didn't use as much as either. So guess it's like you say, I'd probably used too much.

It's the shaking that matters. It has a dulling agent that separates after a while, so if that happens and you don't shake it, you get a glossier finish.

In any case, if you're going to handle your models for gaming you should be varnishing at the end, so glossiness at intermediate steps shouldn't matter.

Does anyone buy the little balls to put inside citadel paints? So when you shake them they mix better? Or is it a bit of a scam?

You didnt shake the pot enough! Happens to me a few times, just need to shake it thoroughly! As a bonus tip, any models that are shiny after use can be fixed by shaking the pot, diluting a dollop with water 50/50 and doing a thin wash over the affected area.
