We knew him from Stardust.
Seeing his name plastered all over the Superman posters was surprising.
And now, he's following a similar thing as Vin Diesel and D&D.

People who play Warhammer (or even know what it is) have probably seen his Superman / Witcher-outings already. This isn't really reaching out to new, untapped audiences for those kind of properties.
Besides that, the marketing push for those properties has long passed (especially the DC stuff). His upcoming marketing commitments (post Corona) will presumably focus on his Sherlock Holmes movie.
Last but not least, if this was some weird, years-delayed guerilla-marketing trick by Warner Brothers for his Superman movies, you'd think they'd ask him to paint a Superman or perhaps a Batman miniature at least.
WB and his management had a bit of a blowout a while back. It doesn't seem like they're interested in having him back in the cape, although it also doesn't appear that the door is 100% shut. He has the same management as the Rock (actually Mr. Johnson's ex), and they know how to use social media well. Cavill wants to keep the MoS 2 dream alive, and getting fans on his side is an important part of that. Between that and the Witcher still being a thing, he has some interest in courting geeks.
HOWEVER, painting Warhammer miniatures is a little too 'inside baseball' to be an invention for social media. A shot of him playing the video game du jour would have landed with a FAR wider audience. Clearly this is something he actually engages with.

well yeah WB are morons who think BvS and JLA failed because of Ben Afflick and Hnery Cavill, not because they where gak movies with a gak vision. Afflick and Cavill did fantastic with what they where working with but.. when what they're working with just was a idiotic vision...

Unless they cut Lex out of the movie it will still be gak every moment he is on screen.
Agreed Cavill and Afflick were fine whilst Gadot smashed it out of the park.
But the laughable, truely awful depiction of Loopy Lex and what passed for his plot destroyed that film and all it could have been...

Bear with me here, but you kind of have that backward. What might have made a good movie out of that wasn't cutting Lex Luthor, it was cutting Batman. The thing is, you're losing the bat, but you're not taking out batman's part of the plot. (Although you are cutting as much of Jessie Eisenberg as you can get away with anyway. Hint that he's someone else in Superman's rouge's gallery or something.) Ben Affleck is delivering all the same lines, but he's playing Lex Luthor through the whole movie, and you take out anything that you couldn't reasonably file the bat-symbol off of.
Think about that. The opening scene, a business man watches Supernan and General Zod re-enacting a natural disaster, runs into the dust cloud to save whomever he can, and when we look up to see the name on the building it's Lexcorp. The aspirational figure we've been rooting for the last 5 minutes or so is Lex f---ing Luthor. You want to plant a subversive flag in the middle of the Superman mythos? That's subversive as hell. I'd pay money to see someone take a real stab at re-editing BvS with that as the overall plan. It still might not have worked, execution is everything after all, but there's the seed of a potentially great movie in there.

FWIW the cut for Justice League actually helped a lot with the pacing. If Snider had more control it might have even been...good.
I liked Shazam a lot I guess and that actually gave me faith in DC movies again.

theyt already released a director's cut of BvS. it still...... wasn't very good.
the problem with JLA etc was in the DNA of the film...
Look, when BvS was coming out I was reading an interview with Snyder that had a single line in it from Snyder that convinced me the movie was going to be a dumpster fire, for all the reasons it was.
and that line was to mock and bash ant man for being a marginal hero no one had ever heard of, and simply assume that everyone will wanna go see BvS because everyone knows Batman and Superman,. problem is he didn't get that the reason why the MCU managed to make movies about super heros no one had ever heard of that everyone loved was by making them fun and making us get to know and like the character.
if BvS had been I dunno "MoonKnight vs Sentry" would anyone have cared about it.. at all?

What I'd love to know is how long he's been in the hobby, how many systems and editions of systems he's played, is there a chance someone on here played against Henry and didn't realize it, and what were his favorite editions. THOSE would be great questions to ask.

which suggests to me Cavill has tradtionally been more a "lore and books" kinda guy, and only recently started with the Mini's end of things

Chances are he could be an on and off kinda guy with too few time and multiple starts behind him?

Warhammer definitely makes sense as a nerd hobby for a famous person. Considering he can afford to commission up a private game table and just have personal friends over his place for a game and 98% of the time you spend on the hobby is something you do alone that makes it a lot easier than something like DnD. I used to play DnD with a fairly minor celebrity (I'm talking like, the author of an extremely well known webcomic level, not even close to a TV or movie star) and the number of times we had people going to extreme, creepy lengths to try and get into the group in order to interact with him was extremely embarrassing and frustrating to him.
Just once, one of our players at a social gathering mentioned as a funny story that this author dude had joined the group and it somehow just got passed around and around this bizarre little community of people who considering they just kept turning up must have like..gotten together and talked about it? That was the most bizarre thing to me. You'd think if you were like a crazy stalker lady obsessed with some celebrity crush you wouldn't find other similar minded individuals and share your information with them, but these people seemed to have a little community going.

Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"
"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"
"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!" |

Cavill seems like a solid guy. I know a couple of people who work with one of his brothers and they all seem like a pretty cool bunch (pretty sure all the brothers save Cavill are Royal Marines). Nice to see the hobby get some low-key representation from someone who seems like a genuine fan ("plastic crack" doesn't seem like it came from a marketing wonk!)
