Murderfang as a rule specifically stating he cannot be your Warlord. Now with the strategem Hero of the chapter it says after you pick a Warlord, pick a character in your army who isn't your Warlord and give him a warlord trait. Now here's the rub, the character is regarded as your Warlord for the purposes of the warlord trait.

Now imo I think MurderFang is a avild choice for hero of the chapter because he still isn't a warlord, you just regard him as such for the warlord trait.

But what do you guys think?

Rules as written I think this works. It seems very unintentional though and is likely to be patched.

It all depends on whether you interpret the rule as preventing him from being considered a warlord for the purposes of the trait or not.

I think that you can, however, give him the trait via the stratagem. Specifically because Assassins state "This model can never have a Warlord Trait", which to me prohibiting being a Warlord and prohibiting having a Warlord Trait are distinct.

Space Wolves have the 'Hero of the Chapter' stratagem thanks to Saga of the Beast.

Use this Stratagem before the battle, after nominating your Warlord. Select one SPACE WOLVES CHARACTER model in your army that is not your Warlord and determine one Warlord Trait for it; it is regarded as your Warlord for the purposes of that Warlord Trait. Each Warlord Trait in your army must be unique (if randomly generated, re-roll duplicate results). You can only use this Stratagem once per battle.

Luckily we're not talking about the SM one. The one in Saga of the Beast can be used on Named Characters, and since we've not even gotten the FAQ for CA19 4 months after release, I doubt Murderfang will be errata'd any time soon.

Also, the SM one does work on named characters.

We've got ten more days for the April FAQ, but it looks like the FAQs are another casualty of the current worldwide situation

Am I thinking of the Faction specific ones?

You're thinking the double WL trait for non-named characters.

Good thing then we got the FAQ update for CA like over 2 months ago and FAQ in february for book in december release is nowhere near 4 months. But not surprising facts are irrelevant.

Fair enough, I'll take that one. I admit, I made a mistake. Still annoyed it took two months for the CA FAQ. And we're past the 2 week window GW promised. Writing a PDF file is easily done remotely and should not be impacted by the current events.

I'm more surprised there was a non-zero amount of people even using Murderfang, I was under the impression he was basically unusable.

You're assuming the rules staff haven't been furloughed, which is quite an assumption to make.

A quick aside, can you use field commander (WGBL stalker pack) and hero of the chapter to have 3 characters with warlord traits?

Yes. You can use as many stratagems as you have access to to give you as many warlord traits as they allow.

Well once I realized he was untargetable, could be given the advance and charge warlord trait plus the new 4+ to hit inflicts 2 hits strat for spacewolves, I think maybe murderfang is really really good.

I'd expect that rules writers would be prime candidates for being able to work from home, though.

Being able to work from home has no bearing on whether or not a company decides to furlough staff. With no sales/revenue coming in at present I wouldn’t be surprised if the majority of GW staff are on furlough.

Absolutely this. I would rather expect rules writers to be prime candidates for furlough.

With no production or sales, they are likely operating on absolute bare minimum staff.
