With 9th on its way, can we compile a complete list of models that were released for 40k in 8th edition?

To prove someone wrong on the internet, of course! Also, I do have legitimate morbid curiosity about how big the Marine releases are compared to everything else. Edit: But who knows. Maybe it'll be a pleasant surprise to see that GW isn't so Marine-heavy.

Battle Sisters got a whole range (what, five squads, three vehicles, four or five characters?), Custodes got jetbikes, Allarus, Wardens, and Valoris, Mechanicum got the tank (and the cav, wingsuits, and flyer, if you count units that got delayed by COVID). Guard got that one Black Library tie-in Commissar, Knights got Armigers and the Dominus-class.
Daemons got new Fiends and Flesh Hounds, CSM got ~7 new characters plus Havocs, new CSM, Terminators, Obliterators, and Greater Possessed. Chaos Knights got their one kit, Death Guard got two Terminator units, new Plague Marines, Poxwalkers, two vehicles, four-ish extra character blisters, and Morty, Thousand Sons got squat.
Craftworlds got Jain Zar and Banshees, DE got Drazhar and Incubi, Harlequins got nothing, Corsairs got deleted (thbbbt). GSC got to start existing with three squads, two vehicles, five characters, and a conversion kit to stack on top of some Guard units. Necrons got nothing (but are apparently getting a big overhaul in 9th), Orks got Gazhkull and the Speed Freeks buggies, Tau got Shadowsun, Tyranids got nothing, Ynnari got to jump from wildly OP to useless and back again a couple of times with rules tweaks.
Space Marines got eight different units, five new vehicles, about fifteen characters that weren't new Lieutenants, about fifteen characters that were new Lieutenants, and however you want to count the weird Japanese random booster pack thing. So they may only have been around 20-25% of the total overall releases but they did get more stuff than the completely new army and the army that got their entire range redone, and more than all the Xenos armies put together.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe. |

Wasn't the Ethereal on the hover board from 7th? I thought it was released with the campaign books after their 7th edition codex dropped, when they had the sets of Raven Guard and Tau facing off. Or did they release a second one I am just completely blanking on?

I will be keeping a release diary for all of 9th once it begins. By the time I thought of doing it for 8th, it was so late in the edition that it was hard to put together.
One of the ways I measure the success of 8th was by the armies it created- the dexes that were 100% new for this edition:
Deathguard, Thousand Sons, Custodes, Chaos Knights for sure.
I think Imperial Knights might be new too, but I'm not sure.
I think Harlequins have had dexes before, but could be wrong.
They aren't dexes, but the Rogue Traders, the Ambull and the Zoat get honourable mention. The new edition better find a way to keep giving us obscure easter eggs like that, because it was arguably my favourite part of this edition.
Slaaneshi daemons really got some love. The new fiends are gorgeous- absolutely the best version ever. The Enrapturess... Damn! And the Keeper as a dual kit for a named character? Brilliant.
Sisters! What pleasantly surprised me the most was the new material. All of these units were new this edition:
- Triumph of Saint Katherine
- Junith Eruita
- Zephyrim
- Mortifiers
- Battle Sanctum
- Imagifier [similar models have existed, but this version is above and beyond]
16 new kits, 3 of which are dual builds, for a total of 19 new/ resculpted units. Additionally, 3 units [characters] from Blackstone Fortress [Taddeus, Pious and Gotfrett] and one Model from KT: Rogue Trader who fits the range, but does not have rules to facilitate effective inclusion [Knosso]. One model was cut from the range [Jacobus] though he lives on in Legends. Though he played no part whatsoever in the edition, Kyrinov was also given Legends rules, and I believe a short "made to order run," which I unfortunately let slide.
We also have to add the Sister Amalia promo and the new made to order, whose name eludes me, but whom I think of as Sister Covid because I paid for her to help GW keep going through quarantine and because she will always represent the human loss and the Martyrdom of front line medical and essential workers for me.
It's unclear whether 9th will drop before or after Pariah, so let's hold off before we add Ephrael Stern to the list.
Ynnari are a bit of an 8th ed wild card- not really an army, and technically released for Gathering Storm, yet hovering on the verge of becoming more for the whole edition, only to come to nothing more than they were when the edition began. I would not be surprised if GW doubles down on Ynnari in 9th and makes the push for them to become a faction.
GSC! Returned to the game so close to the end of 7th that the whole range feels 8th. But even just the models that actually are 8th make up a sizable list- Ridge Runners, Jackals, their Alphus, the Biophagus and Abominant, the Kellermorph, the new Magus and her Locus as well as the Sanctus.
I think the DE got the worst treatment overall. I like the new Drazhar and Incubi, but that dex took a gang beating like few I've seen. The units we lost didn't have models, which is likely why they disappeared. But if a Sisters box can ALSO be 5 doms and 5 Celestians, there's zero reason we can't justify keeping Trueborn and Blood Brides in the dex. And there is still WAY too much Finecast in that army. We better get love in 9th.
That's it for my contribution to the list.

Well, the necrons and dark eldar can fight it out over who has the next primarch stashed in a box somewhere. That would kind of make the DE relevant to a 9th edition release.

That is lowest bar I've ever seen for anything. The originals were some of the worst models ever.
A curled scorpion tail to which you glued two flat pairs of legs, and stuck the head and crab arms bit on the end. (the head/arms were also flat)
But yes, the current ones are great models.

Counting Forge World things Knights got the Moirax. Not sure about the timing on the Forge World Custodians, I know Book 7 with all the 30k rules was March 2017 but I don't think all the models put in an appearance until after 8e had landed. Telemon was definitely later. The Astraeus and the Nemesis Titan were definitely 8e releases. Carnodon/whatever the transport version is for the Guard. Xiphon, Sicaran turret variants. I think the Deredeo and the Leviathan both got extra weapon variants within 8e. Blood Angels/Dark Angels/White Scars unique Contemptor/Leviathan sculpts. Can't remember when Peltasts or the Barracuda resculpt came in.

Going by Lexicanum, Imperial Knights had books in 6th & 7th edition, while Harlequins got their first standalone 'dex in 7th. Both Custones and Sisters of Silence got a mini-dex in the Talons of the Emperor box towards the end of 7th, too.
I'd thought Thousand Sons had as well, but I'm guessing I'm getting that mixed up with the rules part of Wrath of Magnus.

Yeah you are right.
For some reason I had it in my head the start collecting box with it in came out about the same time as 8th - and a quick search yesterday seemed to confirm that.
But checking yeah, I think it was winter 2015/16 around the time Damocles came out.
So just Shadowsun for Tau.

Back in the days when I was on Warseer, I started to keep an incomplete log of what GW was releasing. My main interest was 40K, but my interest in 40K as a game has gone. My miniatures addiction remains. But, my mindset is for miniatures on 25mm round bases so I am not participating in the upscaling of a miniature from 25mm to infinity and beyond.

So, what I have gathered so far from this thread is that Aeldari seriously needs a BIG update in 9th.
This is all they got throughout 8th Edition.
Webway gate
Jain Zar
Banshee kit
Spirit Seer
Drazhar
Incubi
That's over 3 separate factions..... wow
Does this make them the faction with the least new kits throughout 8th (especially when you count them as 3 factions)?
Obviously Marines and Chaos got more (even Deathwatch got Primaris additions).
Astra Militarum? They didn't get much either, right?
GSC...crap ton
Orks...more (but still need a lot updated IMHO
Daemons...more
Nids? Did they get much at all?
Tau too...not much right?
I am quite optimistic, however, that 9th edition will see a significant expansion of the Ynnari, and this may be where we see a big introduction of new kits.
So due for a decent update....Aeldari, Guard, Nids, Tau.

Tyranids didn't get much, but honestly Tyranids are in a pretty good spot model wise:
Things we expect to see at some stage which wuold remove 100% of the finecast from tyranids:
Pyrovore - Biovore duel kit (3 in a box)
Lictor - Deathleaper duel kit (3 in a box)
Red Terror new sculpt (I'd imagine he'd get a size update as he's pretty small now).
After that there's hope for new models for:
Lord of War scale model (ergo something super big knight sized)
Shrikes (warriors with wings, but giving them their own kit so they look freaking cool flying rather than warriors on the ground with wing attachments)
Then there's always
Updating Gaunts with a new sculpt - no more split heads and perhaps a few more weapon options - eg spike rifles.
Updating hormagaunts - no more split heads
Adding "lost" heroes like the hero zoanthrope etc...
Porting over forgeworld - eg skyshrikes, Malanthrope, heirophants

Do they? All named characters minus Thrakka are failcast, and the plastic kopta is still MIA. But outside of that, only kff mek, weird boy, banner nob, tankbustas and kommandoz need new models.
|

It looks like from the brief above:
IG got 2 new models: Severina Raine and the new Catachan Colonel. [ IIRC Sly Marbo came out in 7th, and then was re-run in 8th]
Necrons got 1 new model: Cryptek w/ Canoptek Cloak.
Tyranids got I think 0 new models.
Tau got 1 new model: Cdr. Shadowsun.
Harlequins got 0 new models [except for the gate to share with the other Eldars, so 0.3].
Grey Knights got 0 new models I think.
Thousand Sons got 0 new models, I think.
Craftworld Eldar got 3.3, 1 of which is a unit.
Dark Eldar got 2.3, 1 of which is a unit.
The two big Eldars did at least get full units this edition. Before that, they got the Wraithknight in 6th, I think, and I'm not sure what they got in 7th.
I don't think IG has seen any new units since the Wyvern in 6th.
Tyranids and Tau saw units in Shield of Ball [Neurothrope, Tyrannocyte] and Agrellan [Ghostkeel] in 7th respectively, and Tsons were entirely introduced in 7th. Harlequins were also reintroduced in 7th, I think [maybe tail end of 6th]
Necrons have been on a dearth for a long time, since I don't think I remember new Necrons in 6th or 7th, but they're also getting a huge release coming out in 9th.
Grey Knights I think last got the Stormraven, which I think was 5th.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades! |

Necrons actually got a lot in 6th. There was only an initial wave of models at release for 5th, it took two more waves for them to get all the models in their codex. I don't remember the exact time line. We also got the Tesseract Vault, Obelisk and T. C'tan when Apocalypse was redone.

Oh yeah, I totally forgot about those things from Escalation. Chaos and Necrons got the Lord of Skulls and T. Vault kits respectively. Before that I think the last things were the croissants.
Anyway, It's been a while for Necrons and they're getting a well deserved update.
Guard is long in coming too, but I don't think we'll see new Guard models anytime soon because their line is basically complete from a functional perspective, almost entirely in plastic save characters since Ogryn & Stormtroopers were redone at the same time as the Wyvern and they eliminated almost everything else that might not have been, and they're not Space Marines so there's no impetus to invent new random units that have overlapping capability with existing units.

The most recent tyranid model released was the current Broodlord, back in December 2014 as part of the Shield of Baal: Deathstorm box set. Although that was on the tail end of two large sets of releases during the previous year. Toxicrene/Maleceptor, Tyrannocyte/Sporocyst/Mucolid, and Zoanthropes/Venomthropes/Neurothropes in November 2014. Hive Guard/Tyrant Guard, Warriors, Harpy/Crone, and Exocrine/Haruspex back in January 2014 (alongside the 6th edition codex).

So ideally, this edition should really spread the Xeno love, and what Imperium love comes should go to guard. And BTW, even though their appearance in the trailer was limitted, they were there. I do think that was intentional, though obviously there is no proof of that.
Necrons as the Harbingers of the edition, already have their love. We could be getting some details about a possible campaign to follow PA as part of new edition hype; they did spend a fair bit of time talking about advancing the storyline, and a campaign would support that.
If, on the other hand, the plan is to use 9th ed codices to drive the release schedule, it will take longer for the announcement of a new faction to drop.
Crons will likely get a codex at release.
