Part of this sadness might be due to being a Death Guard fan, but it was always nice seeing that big box up on the wall and the two armies set up and painted near the front of my FLGS, even when everything else around the story seemed to shift around every other week. It's definitely the end of an era. Anybody else feel this way?

Not really. Then again having been through 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and now 8th I have got used to editions changing.

I had no need for either of its parts, at the same time it was a good way to start the game, if you could split the box. The price of the new one is scary high. don't think many people are going to want to buy it, even if they can split it.

If you have to kill, then kill in the best manner. If you slaughter, then slaughter in the best manner. Let one of you sharpen his knife so his animal feels no pain.

I guess you entered the hobby during 8th. The starter box usually changes between editions (Dark Vengeance aside) in order to include the updated rulebook.
As for the miniatures inside, it's likely we'll see them repackaged as Start Collecting boxes for primaris SM and DG.

No.
Since 2e starter boxes come & go with editions. Soon you'll see the new box up on the wall & its contents set up & painted & a new era will begin. Then? In another 3-4 years? The 10th ed era will commence....

I just want to snag another primaris half to add in the poses from the inevitable new set w assault intercessors.

Has a price been announced yet? I didn't think GW had even officially announced the starter box yet...

Nope. That said, the figure of £120 was mentioned on Kiroth's YouTube channel.

This is based on the fact that GW are holding a competition to win "10 Warhammer 40K mystery boxes", the contents of which are 'secret'. The cartoony picture with the announcement shows a marine and a necron facing off over a locked crate. In the Terms and Conditions smallprint fpr the competition it says "the value of the contents of each prize is GBP £120 / AUD $290."

It feels like the end on an era to me. I played in 2E and 3E, then went away for a long time. By pure chance, I came back a week or two before the launch of 8th, so it's been "The" starter set for me since I came back.

I don't think we've seen the end of the models however. I think we'll see 2 Start Collecting boxes made up out of these.

Fair enough. Honestly that's about what I'd expect...

the dark imperium set was so great for forging a decent primaris army so a small aprt of me feel sad but... NEW STUFF!

Dark Imperium was a great starter kit. It served its hobby and did its duty well. It introduced many new players to the game, reignited the love of the game for many old fans, and helped breathe new life in to Warhammer 40k. And now it’s watch has ended.

The starter box is dead, long live the starter box!

The DI box is the first 40k starter I picked up since 4th. It had some really nice content. While I might not be a huge fan of the way they took the lore with the primaris, I can’t fault the models.

I’m a marine player, so the starters are often aimed at me. Being the “other” half of the box is a massive boost to the faction. You are front and center for once. You are the main antagonist. I can see how being replaced with a new foe could hit hard.

Considering the amount of none stop whinging and moaning about death guard and primaris I'd be surprised if anyone publicly said they will miss it.

I definitely won't miss it, as I don't play either of the featured factions. There's a chance I might spring for the next one though, those new Necron miniatures are tight.

Possibly. Obviously the best starter box was 3rd... (am I showing my age here?)

I never picked up the entire DI box (I got my hands on Know No Fear instead), but it was a very nice box. Plenty of stuff, and good value for what you got. I'd have picked up DI before it went OOP, but I really can't afford it right now, so I'll say my goodbyes now.

never saw anyone whine about deathguard beyond some people complaining they didn't get bikes or Havoks, and honestly I think the anti-primaris sentiment has become a minority now. the people complaining about them "not looking like space marines" are hoenstly eating crow with the new boxed set I think

Yeah, I seriously implore anyone to say that the Primaris range at current "isn't Space Marine-y". We've got bling, we've got dedicated combat units, we've got ground vehicles - weren't those a lot of main complaints that people had?

I’m not quite to the point where I need rose colored bi-focals. I remember the 3rd ed starter, and it was just OK. Marine side was one 10 man tac squad and a land speeder. DE was 20 warriors. Some ruins, trees, and battlefield junk. Big rulebook, where the first printing the cover popped right off.

Now compared to the 2nd ed box it was nice. Full models, not monopose bolter huggers. Which now that I think about it, might have been the only time we had that. OK, big point for the 3rd starter.

But from a volume standpoint, it was lacking behind most of the others. Less then 2nd, Roughly equal to the 4th’s, and falling farther behind compared to 5th+. 3rd was when army size was ramping up, and you got a basic squad to start, with a speeder for support. Not the best.

Looking at the old catalog, it sold for $75. Which in today’s money is closer to $115. So while we do get a heck of a lot more in today’s starter, we do pay more.

I'll go ahead and say I'll miss it. Was a very nice change to have Deahtguard get such spot light and, zombies I'm a fan.

The box rotates out all the time but it was a special time when this box dropped for me. The only other one I really missed was Assault on Black Reach as it was around here a real golden age for players getting in.

I missed that one. Part of my want to track down the marine half. Then I slap myself. I don’t need it. But it was a great box.

I feel like this is a metaphor for 40k, people not wanting things to change

No this is a good thing. We can now get proper ancients, gravis captains, Lord of contagion, etc

Bought in to the whole Primaris thing only just recently first with Intercessors for Killteam and then the Start Collecting Vanguard box.

I think the DI Intercessors are awesome sculpts, and wish I had both sets of them.

Ended up splitting the box. The DG side of the set was definitely worth it for me. But if I hadn't dedicated myself to Vanguard, the Imperial half of DI would still be a worthy investment.

Fair point. It got my son & I started in 40k. 23 years later we're still both playing - and still using those figures.

Thanks to this box, DG has been one of the cheapest armies to start in a very long time. It also helped a friend of mine to finally start his first army with the marine halves.
Not sad to see it go, since I already have as many of the models in there as I'm ever going to need, but it has done a good job and I'm thankful for GW making it.

Very much the best starter box since the unparalleled AOBR.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

Probably because Know No Fear is just DI with less sprues and the content of First Strike is still available from the ETB sets.

It is speculation, but it is also not entirely baseless.
