Subject: Will they keep smaller starter sets in 9th?

If this has been addressed by GW and I missed it, please link me and we can close the thread, but I was wondering about the community's thoughts on the smaller starter sets that were introduced in 8th. In my area at both my LGS and my Warhammer store, Know No Fear hit a sweet spot, and was a massive seller. It helped bring MANY new players to the game. For the most part, great as it was, the traditional "large starter" of Dark Imperium was generally ignored, or bought by pairs of experienced players so they could split the cost and take only the models they wanted.
IDK if my experience is typical, but it seems like those smaller starter boxes were a great idea, and I haven't seen anything like that hinted at. What are Dakka's thoughts? Will they bring back the smaller starters? Should they? If they don't, will it be a roadblock in getting new players to join?

Edit: I just googled ablutions and apparently it does not including dropping a duece. I should have looked it up early sorry for any confusion. - Baldsmug

Wait, what were we talking about again? Did I ever tell you about the time I gave you five bees for a quarter? That's what you'd say in those days, "give me five bees for a quarter", is what you'd say in those days. And you'd go down to the D&D shop, with an onion in your belt, 'cause that was the style of the time. So there I was in the D&D shop..." |

It will be interesting to see how much the “universal points increases” affect the on-table size of those starter sets.

Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment. |

That's funny - I was literally just lamenting that decision in another thread. I hadn't even thought about it in terms of the starters - you're right though. I almost wonder if the increase will preclude a set like that?

I think it was estimated that if the leak photos were correct for a starter set youre looking at maybe 800 a side for 8th ed money, in 9th they might scramble closer to 1k, or maybe 50pl, conveniently enough for the middle game size or to start a crusade with some options.
The smaller boxes could be a perfect "heres 2 small crusade starters at 25pl each", they're also good for stocking up on some core units cheaply so I hope they stay.

Given that they did multiple levels of starter kit for Dark Imperium and both Sigmar starters I expect the half/quarter-sized mini-starter-box is here to stay.

They put the DI box on Last Change to Buy, but not the smaller ones.
Might be around at least for a little bit longer.

IIRC know no fear came out a month (or more) after the core box dropped

So we might get new versions a month after 9th drops, and these get LCTB’d? Could be.
It will be interesting to see if they keep the DI sprues in play somehow, either by keeping the Know no Fear box in print, or making a new SC box. The question is how they can do it without canbalizing other sales.
Just the marine half of the KnF box is roughly equivalent to a SC box (might be a little light).
5 intercessors
5 hellblasters
3 inceptors
1 captain
But right now you get that, and all the DG for less then the other SC boxes.
Would adding the other DI sprue (5 more intercessors, 2 LTs, ancient) be too much for a SC box? It would make it damn attractive.

well, AOS split their medium range strter box (the know no fear equivilant) into two SC boxes so thats the most likely approuch here. if they did a SC with the contents of dark Imperium I'd def pick one up just because "wowza good deal" (and I can always use more marines!)

The starter sets are still a great value no matter what when you weigh cost per model.

They'll probably do a new "Get Started with 40K" magazine as well, and hopefully it'll be an easy-to-build HQ character for either Marines or Necrons. A Necron Lord or Primaris Lieutenant would be ideal.
Definitely onboard for a small kit for two Kill Teams. Would even be interested to see what a £50 set would offer, too...
