Hmmm, tough call. But if you want the best lore of the bunch, Aeldari are definitely the top choice.
Three factions with as many choices in playstyles as all the other factions in the game combined.
Going to fully recommend Craftworld Eldar. They get their fair share of love from GW rules. They have fast, tanky, and deadly covered across a variety of units. Wraith units manage to be durable while being fantastic looking units. The vehicles are equally slick and durable!
They have rules and units to cover just about any playstyle you can think of. Craftworld Eldar = Options.

What do you think about the models in the upcoming Indomitus box? Two decent sized armies for a really good price. Give them both a try, then buy more of the one you like best.

I don't know, but apparently enough do to make it worth GW selling those things.

Look carefully at each force. Make a list of all of the models you like the look of in each force. When you're done? Tally up the likes for each force.
Wichever force has the highest total? Buy in to that force, right then.
Go straight down your list adding 1 of everything to the cart until you've hit your budget limit Don't forget to add glue, clippers & a hobby knife to the order. Hit "Submit Order" .
There, now the $s spent & you're committed to your 1st army.
After this initial purchase THEN start looking into how to save $ on the rest of the list.
Who in their right mind buys glue, clippers or dice from GW. Not to mention that pick what you like can back fire in a spectacular maner.
someone who doesn't want to run around placing orders at 2-3 websites or run to 2 -3 stores in the name of saving a few bucks?

Normally I'd agree, but GW charges £21 for a pair of hobby clippers. If you got the tool set from GW:
2 files
mouldline remover
hand drill and 5 drill bits
saw (basically scalpel saw)
clippers
You'd be spending £80. They are good quality, but there is scope to get high quality tools for VASTLY less; whilst for the same amount you could get way more tools.

I've lurked here on and off for years and finally made an account because I felt so seen in this particular thread.
I played a bunch of games on TTS with my brother and was going "Man, I really like Death Guard! Or maybe CSM...or maybe White Scars...or maybe Blood Angels...or maybe..." There is some fantastic advice in this thread that I will be stealing going forward, but to the OP: the solution I've come up for myself with is to get some 'staple' Space Marine units that I would be able to pretty easily convert to Chaos equivalents later. That way I can build and paint some models, play a bunch of games with opponents who won't scoff at my "counts as", keep digging into the fluff and expand in the direction that I have enjoyed the most.
Side note, the folks in this thread are responsible for some good wholesome internetting that, honestly, made my day.

I DO NOT care about how good an army is as I know rules change and that I should go with the models I think look coolest and have the coolest lore.
Imperial Guard/Astra Militarum.
They have a wide range of models with very different aesthetics. Depending on where you play, this is further expanded with 3rd party conversion kits or entirely new model kits.
The lore is diverse as you wish it to be. The Guardsmen are (usually) normal men in the world where they live but what constitutes normal varies from world to world. as you wish, from primitive world barbarians given laser guns, to chemically enhanced labourers, to criminal scum, hardbitten gangers, private militia.
Whats more, once you have a guard army, you can use it in various ways. It can represent the elite troops of a planetary governor, a standing force raised to guard a space station from birth, the enforcers of a criminal gang. They could be infiltrated by Xenos, corrupted by chaos or just sent into the wrong side of a conflict by administrative error as the situation demands. You're not tied down in the same way as an eldar player is- his wraithguards are wraithguards and their lore is fixed. The Necrons are Necrons, the Tyranids are Tyranids and the marines have a bit more character development- when they put your entire world to the sword will they feel bad about it ?
Humans are humans and the galaxy belongs to man. Your army could be anywhere doing anything, annexing worlds under the authority of a rogue trader, a mercenary company searching for lost archeotech,
