It heavily depends on the price point - a ton of good models don't mean much if the box ends up being $300+

Not that it will be necessarily, but it's a factor in whether the box is good or not.

I prefer to buy from miniature manufacturers that *don't* support the overthrow of democracy.

Yes and no?

The model count is definitely impressive, as are the sculpts themselves. I’m definitely buying it, and already have a swap lined up for more Necrons.

But....as said the price is the thing. Given the contents, I’d be chuffed if it’s the ‘based on some actual info’ £120.00 guess. I mean, what may be around 1,000+ points (when doubled up) and the rule book is a decent haul.

I’m just hoping the pubs are open by release date, as I always enjoy a pint and a read through of a new edition.

Is new 40k the best box set ever?

If you like SM, especially primaris, and Necrons maybe, it mostly depends on how much the whole box costs.

I'm not crazy about those factions, and I'm not interested at all in starting collecting/playing them, so that's an easy NO for me, as some previous sets did have models that I wanted.

They mention each side is approx 50pl which is 1k points so doubling up is a 2k army.

Oh nice!

Pretty solid value for the predicted £120 then.

Price depending, it's a great looking set. But, obviously, it all depends on what the cost is.

When you look at the older boxed sets like 3rd edition
https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Warhammer_40,000_3rd_Edition_Box_Set

You can clearly see that most of them were just basic troops with perhaps a small vehicle. So yes the contents of the boxed sets have become more and more interesting over the years. Steadily GW has pushed the sculpt quality, but also the content designs and the focus. No more is it just basic troops, we get unique character leaders and specialist units and even war engines of quite considerable size in there.

I'm starting less and less hopeful of 120£ price. This is the more expensive set with cheaper one coming later. Every GW start set has been higher price than previous so if new is less than 120£ of the deluxe set price gap isn't that big. Also would make the Aelf launch set look even more silly with ~500 pts and 16 models plus limited ed battlecome and cards and tokens vs limited ed rulebook, 2 ~1k armies with tons of models.

I very much suspect price is lot more than 120£ and the prize for draw is regular start set

It can’t be much more can it? The box set is supposed to be the starter set aswell as the new edition of the game and it’s not even Xmas. Or are GW just planning on selling this to people already invested in 8th?

1k point army is great but would experienced play take just 3 incinerators? How long is that unit gonna last

This is a launch box not starter set. That's why it hasn't got dice or rulers in it - so it might be priced higher tahn normal for a starter set because its intended market is current GW customers and specifically necron and marine players.

It's not intended for beginners or those new to GW in general.

That said GW also know that they can't go too nuts with the price. If they go way too high it just won't sell because the sticker-shock hits the buyer.

LOL, I had forgotten that box - 20 Kabalites. How boring could you get? Even the cardboard dreadnought was more interesting than that.

Yeah, it's pretty solid. I'm gonna press X to doubt the 120 price point though. i'm betting 240USD.

Kabalites in their day were really neat kits; but yes it was a very basic setup. That was back when characters were all metal models (as were many elite/solo models). Even many tanks and such were like that - the Talos was metal etc... So GW only had limited options for many armies in what plastic they could put in the box.

It's amazing when you look back at jsut how far some model sculpts and ranges have come. And yet at the same time the genestalers on my table infront of me, which basically have the same overall design they've had for decades, still work and look great.

I think the best boxed set GW has released so far might have been the Horus Heresy box with three full Tac squads, the Cataphracti Squad, a Contemptor and a couple characters. Everything was useful and it was a good price.

A lot of the boxed sets are either not very discounted, or have a lame unit or two. The Xenos ones in particular seem to always have a less-than-desirable squad or something.

I always liked Battle for McDonalds.

It gave us Termagants with one piece heads, and plastic spore mines during a time when such things didn't exist. It also had terrain. More starter boxes need terrain.

not the best looking minis (dark Imperium and the upcoming indomatus set blow them away that way) but certainly the best value for a marine player agreed.

No it's not starter set. That one comes later. This is limited edition launch set. Whole point is it's more expensive limited edition stuff to get bigger profit first and then provide cheaper actual starter set later. This is missing several items like measurement tape that are always in actual starter set.

120£ would be ridiculously cheap. Sister boxed set with limited codex and not nearly as many models that added to about 400 pts was around that. The new elf box is 115£ with 16 models for about 400 pts and limited ed codex + cards and dices. Compared to both of those the launch set with limited ed rulebook + all those models would be ridiculously good value. And make especially the elf box look even more of a ripoff.

Dice are limited ed and usually £20 from memory, those are full sprues not easy to build (probably a £5-10 premium per kit) and there are no card equivalents in the 40k box (£15?). Factor that in and you've got a £50 box daft as it sounds for the aelves.

Oh man! That stirs up some strong emotions. After a start painting box of Lizardmen Saurus, that's the second Warhammer kit I ever got! I actually think that was fantastic value for its time, especially considering the inclusion of terrain, which is often neglected theses days. On the other hand, my clumsy, 10 year old hands failed so utterly at gluing those kabalites together, that it was almost another 20 years before I bought another kit.

For me the land speeder was the nightmare...

And speak about unbalanced starter sets. Dark eldars had literally nothing that could hurt the speeder!

My start for 40k with that box set.

Objectively, yeah, it looks fantastic – some cool sculpts, a variety of models, usable forces straight out the box – although I'd say Dark Imperium was pretty great on all these fronts too. Personally, however, I've no particular interest in Necrons and I actively dislike Primaris stuff, so I'm not particularly excited about it. But that's absolutely to do with me rather than the set.
