I was wondering if there was an in universe, even if ad-hoc, armour upgrades that Imeprial guard units would add to their armoured fighting vehicles similar to what modern day American and British do to their MBTs?

Recently I've been getting into war thunder/tanks in general again and there is something to be said about the beastly nature of a M1A2 fully decked out in the tusk2 configuration and I really want to see if it would be at least feasible in an in universe way to have a baneblade or leman russ with a similar way before trying my hand at modelling one myself.

Guard Tank aces can take the 'up armoured' trait - though only one per army - which would represent this nicely.

Historically in 40k there have been various armour upgrade options for imperial tanks. Regardless of what is in the rules you can add any details you like to your models.

I put some armoured side panels on a Destroyer kitbash I made as a homage to the german ww2 systems. You could easily pick up a 1:54 AbrahmsTUSK model and salvage the armour units for use on your 40k tanks.

There definitely are such things. They even used to exist in-game as a variety of different upgrades (Extra Armor, Dozer Blade, Mine Plow, etc).

But sadly all those died in the over-simplification of 8th.

Tracks and sandbags are common, and forgeworld did a line of extra armour and spaced armour/skirts that all used to be better represented in the game. IIRC some kits have even come with a spare track link to use that way.

I was using tanks with mine plows, dozer blades and extra armor on the very last day of 7th.

Track guards still exist, and I was dealing with ceramite armor in a 30k game just Sunday. But in 40k? Dead.

Dozer blades and Track guards are still upgrades for Astra Militarum Tanks:

They don't do nearly the same thing as they used to but there are other reasons for that.

Track guards used to Ignore Drive damaged Vehicle penetration/Glancing results, now they just ignore Mv wound degradation.

Dozer Blades used to ignore or reroll Difficult terrain tests and difficult terrain doesn't exist is 8th; so now they add 1 to hit rolls when charging.

I am looking forward to the new Guard dex in 9th to see if dozer blades go back to ignoring Difficult Ground terrain trait or if they just remain +1 to hit.

Extra Armor used to downgrade a penetrating hit to a Glancing blow; but they are just gone now.
