I've heard a bunch about what a great value it is for the model cost.

Is it worth picking up a second set of the minis for force building purposes? I know that was a thing to do with some editions. Not sure it applies here.

The only strict limit is that "rule of 3" is now a formal rule restricting units taken. So that gives you an upper limit for any specialist units within the set. Of course we don't know all the unit numbers, so for example one might guess that the four legged walker for necrons is a 1 unit block so you could only take 3; however the new three legged sword units might be 3-6 or greater so could potentially be taken in far greater numbers.

That said its really what you want.

Personally I've aimed for 3 copies for the necron; aiming to get two sets and sell one marine half and swap the other for 3rd necron set.

It depends. I think the characters become redundant very quickly. I could also see a situation where two boxes of Necron warriors, or a bike kit and an intercessor kit cost more than a box split would. In general, I think buying multiple copies of a big starter is a great way of ending up with a massive pile of grey plastic that you will never paint, or even use. Considering each half clocks in at around 1k points, I think you are better off going for more variety in your army.

I'm not really sold on the idea of multiples.

1) There are 9 characters in the set. How often are you going to want 2? [Exception- necrons may want multiple plasmancers, just to toss mortal wounds around every turn like they were psykers or something.]

2) The special units- like the Skorpekh destroyers and the primaris bikers may get other/better weapon options in a full kit.

3) Warriors are rather mediocre as is, and they're a big chunk of the necron force in this box. On the other hand, Scarabs are tied directly to their sprues again, so warriors major contribution may be scarabs.

4) Reanimator looks rather meh.

5) If you have multiple crypteks, you may want multiple groups of thralls for their bodyguarding ability.

6) the primaris side is really specialized. Anyone can see what the eradicators can do, but the Space Marine _foot-slogging_ melee horde is definitely limited to a deliberate build. (Hint: go white scars). A unit of these is fine to toy around with, fill gaps or mono-task with some support. But I don't see a general army going particularly heavy on them. At least not heavy to the point of two full units of each, let alone more.

For marines maybe?

You’d need to be playing one of the more choppy chapters

Duplicate characters get old real fast, and there are a lot in the box.

The bikes and melta guys look real solid, duplicate units are probably not a bad thing.

Might be fun to have one unit of bladeguard, do you need two?

Assault intercessors are in the same boat. They fill a niche role, but you probably want to take more regular riflemen, rather than sword and pistol. On the bright side, it looks like the arms are simple swaps, so if you have spare arms from intercessors, you can use extra bodies to build more. So it’s not just dead weight.

One box adds some nice new tools to your collection. But how many do you want to spam? Not enough to justify the cost unless you know you can offload the spares.

Can’t speak for the necron half.

Don't forget with swaps, provided you only want one half, each box gives you two sets. Assuming that you sell/swap to get the other half.

Also don't forget that in 2 weeks time ebay and the like will be flooded with sensibly priced split kits. So things like warrior or bikes that you might want to build up more of you can pick up at discount - perhaps not as cheap as they are in the box, but cheaper than retail for regular releases of them.
