Hello! So I've been posting alot on here lately and I hope you guys don't mind the mounds of questions. Anyhow, I've recently decided I'm going to be getting into thousand sons, so that will be fun.

I saw a post saying about how someone was overwhelmed with 9th coming out and I can say I agree to that. My main question is what exactly will we or I be needing to buy with this new edition? 9th edition rulebook? Any other books that go with this new edition that will be needed? I saw on the GW website they just updated a bunch of stuff yesterday I believe so I was wondering if that was for 9th or 8th. There is alot of stuff coming out and im finding it hard to wrap my head around it all.

Hopefully we don't have more of those indexes that were releases a while ago. I never liked that temporary codex type thing if I must be honest.

As usual, thank you all.

No indexes.

The just updated FAQs are for the new edition.

Depending on how you play (GW's silly open, narrative, matched separations, as if they were exclusive), the rulebook may not be necessary. The Chapter Approved 2020 Grant Tournament pack has the base rules, actions, strats, terrain and missions. There might be something missing, so they may not be quite 100%, but they may get you past the $65 rulebook (for $40), and you get the points update as well (which the rulebook doesn' t have).

So if you want absolute minimum new purchases I'd say that's the real starting point.

Ah ok, i didn't even know about the chapter approved. Like I said there's so much stuff to try and find out here that its nuts. I wish they would just have a good book down. One that dosnt need to be constantly checked to make sure there isn't a word change haha

You need:
The Rule book
Your Codex
The FAQ for your codex
The 2020 Chapter approved with pts/missions etc (probably)

Depends on your style of play:

Matched/Tournament player: Chapter Approved 2020 (it includes a small-format core rulebook, tournament missions and the updated points), Codex, Psychic Awakening: Ritual of the Damned

Narrative Player: Main rulebook (has the Crusade rules and missions), Codex, and optionally Psychic Awakening (though there's lots of good stuff there regardless)

Open Player: Main rulebook, optionally Open War Cards, Codex

(The distinctions are a bit arbitrary, but how GW structures the releases. If you don't play in tournaments you probably don't need the tournament missions and may not need the points either.)

Having Vigilus Defiant doesn't hurt either...

I will not rest until the Tabletop Imperial Guard has been reduced to complete mediocrity. This is completely reflected in the lore.

I'll tell you the same thing I tell every newbie: the first thing you need are some models and glue. Buy yourself some models, glue them together, and ask yourself if you still think the hobby is for you. If you're still onboard, buy yourself a brush and some paint and give your plastic some colour. If after this, you're still interested in playing, download the free core rules and give them a whirl... And so on. Basically what I'm saying is, do things incrementally. There's no point investing a tonne of money early on, only to discover the hobby is not really for you.

Good luck!

Since you're playing Thousand Sons:
Rulebook
Codex for whatever army/armies you are playing
Applicable Psychic Awakening book (Ritual of the Damned)
Applicable Legends PDF
Rulebook FAQ
Codex FAQs for whatever army/armies you are playing
Applicable Psychic Awakening book FAQ
Also every other FAQ because GW likes to hide generic FAQs in army specific FAQs.

AFAIK Vigilus Ablaze has no usable rules for Thousand Sons.

Or the PA book, as some armies are not really playable without it.

If you have to kill, then kill in the best manner. If you slaughter, then slaughter in the best manner. Let one of you sharpen his knife so his animal feels no pain.

So I have the same question but for Dark Eldar/Drukhari. The gaming groups in my area play matched so I think I would need the following:
Core Rules
Munitorium Field Manual (For points)
Codex Drukhari
Psychic Awakening: Phoenix Rising
+Faqs

What I'm not sure about:
The vigilus books

Vigilus has nothing for Dark Eldar IIRC.

Are Psychic Awakening rules actually required? Do they change the rules or just add to them? (This is a honest question, I don't know the answer)

I would say not mandatory but a very bad idea to not get. It differs between faction but they add a lot of new rules and stratagems. For some armies like Grey Knights or Scions it's literally night and day the power difference with vs without. Grey Knights without PA is like taking a 50% handicap in points limit, it's that extreme.

Even as someone who got back into 40k halfway through 8th edition, I really feel ya on not knowing where to start! As 8th edition wore on there were so many books and FAQs to keep track off. I was hoping 9th would give a clean slate FAQ that just condensed everything, but sadly all the 8th edition Errata are still in play until new codecies are released for each faction. For my own part I'm going to wait until the 9th edition Chaos Codex comes out - but plenty of people don't seem to have that same problem. They're probably more organized than I am!

My painting log is full of snakes
Have any retro, vintage, or out of print models? Show them off here!
Games I play: 40k (CSM, Necrons); AoS/Fantasy (Seraphon/Lizardmen); Warcry; Marvel Crisis Protocol; Wargods of Olympus/Aegyptus; Mythos

Dark Eldar pretty much just got 'create your own sub-factions' and a name generator. Not worth it.

I think Drazhar got updated rules also. Might be something I would pick up later but for now it seems like I can do without.

If you mean the short rules, they're on the WarCom website.

If you mean the big rule book or the Mission book (which also has the rules), they aren't out yet. 25th.
