Just as an fyi there seems to be information missing from codex found on the app. Haven't looked closely, but tyranids are incomplete, for instance.

My app just crashes when ever I try to open the core rules. Best to give it a month before we go too hard on it as the devs probably had very little time to polish it.

Then they should have planned for building it sooner. Don't make excuses for GWs gak products.

It would not surprise me if GW management did not know what they wanted with the app until last moments.
They probably did not share any details with the devs on the game itself until recently.

Which is bad planning and poor project management. Not that this is new or unexpected. But it's not an excuse. It's a fair criticism of a bad product put out by a company that should know better. It's not like this is their first piece of software.

I have not used the age of sigmar app, but there painting app is so useless. It did not even have all there minis sold, its like Why even bother making it if you half ass it to uselessness.
Sometimes i wonder about just whats going on with management.

It's a complete piece of junk. And yet you know that thousands of people immediately signed up and started paying for it.

GW is crying all the way to the bank. The great thing about having people who will buy your products no matter how embarrassingly bad they are is having people who will buy your products no matter how embarrassingly bad they are.

Won't even open on my S7, crashes immediately. It works on my wife's S10 so being a programmer I looked at the stack trace and as near as I can tell it's crashing trying to load an image that's too large for the screen. Which tells me they didn't test multiple resolutions.

that's GW in a nutshell. They put out garbage and yet make millions so why bother to actually improve anything?

I'm still dumbfounded that anyone subscribed to what was clearly going to be a sub-par product from the day it was announced.

Some people only play GW games and assume that whatever GW does is as good as tabletop gaming gets.

So iOS version just launched.

https://www.warhammer-community.com/2020/07/29/app-improvements-updates-and-a-month-free/

Downloaded it and subscribing was easy and accessing the content pretty straightforward. Not going to repeat a lot of the criticisms about functionality as many are still present in the iOS version.

That said, having legal access to all the datasheets, relics, stratagems, war gear, traits, etc. for every faction including the various PA expansions that if purchased separately would be over $1000 USD for basically $60 per year is to me awesome value. Yes, that value proposition will decline as new books are released, but as it will take longer than a year for all those rules to be updated, I cannot say that I will cringe at paying $5 a month over the next year.

One thing I will repeat and share how astonished I am about is they should have had true e-pub version of the core book and CA GT 2020 ready to go at launch and need to add these for subscribers sooner reather than later among other improvements such as allowing options to search by faction, unit type, etc. instead of the admittedly somewhat clunky alphabetical sorting they are using now.

I can see why they did it this way, but browsing by publication is terrible. The sensible default is to browse by faction (or better yet subfaction) so if I just want to look through the Tryanid strategems I don't have to scroll through two different publications and skip over the Blood Angel strategems from the PA book since the Tryanid and BA strats are intermingled.

One thought I had at this seemingly ill-conceived way of organizing everything It kind of makes sense from the perspective that in the real world with hard copy versions, you would be looking up information by book as well. I.e. they were just matching the organization to how we have historically accessed the information up to now.

The other reason is quite simply it is easier to program and subsequently update everything if it is kept organized by the way it is published.

Making a query function that would allow an individual to dynamically look up and view information in such a holistic fashion as I think we are all describing is in fact quite advanced.

Ultimately I take the app as a step in the right direction if not the penultimate version in form or functionality. Is it perfect, no. Is it more useable and in many ways superior to how the information was previously made available, yes.

Disagree. The information is made more easily accessible when the database is only presenting the most current and valid information. Who gives a gak what the codex says x strat is if it was updated in this other book 2 years later?

The only thing i want to know about publications is a small foot note telling me where the ruling came from. When i look up nids the only data i care to see is the currently valid data in a concise easily searchable list. Anything less than that isn't worth a single red cent. Because other sources provide that data for free.

while it is understandable that GW would immediately build their data in the app to reflect how it is laid out in the codex/release schedule, that is ultimately a poor design framework

as a bitter wargamer, worn down by decades of GW silliness, in my opinion, the psychic awakening releases and their gatekeeping and dividing of rules across multiple publications is totally ridiculous. Put all of an armies rules in the codex.

The app should be a tool that helps speed games up and even bookkeep some of the trickier accounting that happens.

If they pay attention to what they're doing it could be the perfect digital companion to our very offline hobby.

Obviously this would mean allowing players to quickly access their armies specific rules and strategems as fast as possible.

hopefully this comes with the army builder.

Thankfully, because of battlescribe, there is actually pretty good competition and GW will look bad if they half-ass it all the way through (however they still might half-ass it all the way through)....

regardless, as much as I am a sci-fi nerd, I just cannot buy priced through the roof bespoke army picture books that are riddled with grammar errors, typos, and so on. So the app is much more reasonably priced imo.

Either treat the paper codex like real pieces of literature or lean into the digital realm which will allow things to be rushed out and patched up later. $50 for the content in a PA book (maybe 5,000 words, 25 colour photos?) is really uhhhh, not worth the money.

1000x this. I want an app that is a complete gameplay aid. I put in my army list and then it should have all data it needs to guide me through the turn. I want the app to track which units I've moved, which have advanced, which I've used stratagems on and how many CPs I have remaining. Throw a dice roller in while you're at it to handle all the rolls and rerolls. I'd pay good money for that. An app like that would quickly become indispensable. But then that would require effort to make. Much easier to ask people to pay a subscription fee to have digital access to rules they already bought on paper. No thanks.

If the dice roller is supposed to do all that, it should do all the rolls for you attacker --> target, then tell you how many models to remove/wounds to allocate. Really it would remove probably 50% of the game, and the resulting leftovers would not be very fun.

I don't really see the appeal of rolling the 50 dice anyway for the same effect myself.

Which says basically everything about the game doesn't it?

The most entertaining thing in the game is grabbing a big pile of dice and rolling them 4 times in a row. So much tactical depth!

You guys remember those surveys like a year and a half, two years ago where they asked us about digital products and frequency of updates? I'll bet that's was during the information gathering phase for this app. Which seems like an appropriate amount of time for an app like this, so I don't think the app is bad because insufficient time allocation.

Most software development trainwrecks happen in slow motion, a slipped deadline here, a missed deliverable there, and it all just kind of accumulates into what we in the industry call technical debt. Add in a client as particular as GW appears to be, and you can end up with reworks eating up a bunch of the schedule for other features.

So I doubt GW was unaware of the state of the app prior to launch, and it was a bad decision on their part to launch the app in a half baked state. Like Kojima said "A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad". GW should have waited, because people are much more forgiving of delays than crap quality.

Constantly being negative doesn't make you seem erudite, it just makes you look like a curmudgeon.

Yep. When it was clear the army builder wasn't ready, they should have announced a delay. They even could have blamed it Covid and people would have barely blinked.

'Hey, we know you bought in too early, so have a free month of nothing' is not a solution to a lousy roll-out.

Efficiency is the highest virtue.
