I'm a bit annoyed that 9th came out so soon. Can someone update me as to what is now useless? I've got several codexes and card decks I never even got a chance to use.
What's the story with 9th now? Are any stats of units changed? Will new codexes be a necessity, or can I get away with just the core rulebook and looking up the stats for any new releases? Are there still stratagems - or should i throw out all of those cards?
Are there plans to put out rules for FW armies like Death Korps, or are we just going to get more of the same BS on that front that we always get? "it's FW's business" - which means they'll put out halfarsed terrible rules that give us horribly noncompetitive armies and no updates/errattas.

9th wasn't a hard reset like 8th was. So currently all your codexs and any PA content is still legal. GW did update pts in CA2020 and Maelstorm of war is no longer a supported mission type.
So you would need the core rulebook and CA 2020. CA 2020 has all the rules to play the game but is missing the narrative rules, army creation rules and the missions that are in the core rulebook. It is also missing all the fluff.

Currently totally useless:
- Maelstrom Decks
- Space Marine Codex 2017
- All the Indexes, except for Fortifications
- White Dwarf with Crimson Fist rules
- White Dwarf with Blood Raven rules
- Anything that's been moved over the Warhammer Legends (not totally useless, since they're fun for Narrative games, but not useful at all for Matched Play)

Just wanna note a correction here, matched play technicly allows the use of legends, just some people seem to equate matched play to tourny play where legends is "not reccomended"

Honestly, no reason to discontinue playing Malestrom missions under 9th rules. I'm not planning on ditching all my cards just yet.

There’s also a slight change to wound allocation rules.
If I’ve a mixed arms squad, I choose which guns to fire with, and do so in batches. Rule book uses example of 8 Bolters, 1 Meltagun and 1 Missile Launcher. I target an enemy infantry squad with the Bolters and Meltagun, the Missile Launcher shoots at a tank.
I then choose the order of batches., resolving the attacks of like weapons before moving on to the next.
Now, here’s the interesting part. When your allocating any resulting wounds, you have to first allocate to an already wounded model, or (and this is the change) a model that has already had a wound allocated to it this phase.
This is situational, but it does now prevent my opponent using say, a Stormshield to tank the Meltagun, and allocating the Bolters to non-storm shield models.
Definitely worth bearing in mind if you use mixed equipment units, as there are certain sneaky tricks I can pull when targeting it to try to remove specific models, or prevent you tanking high AP shots on INV equipped models.

There are also so very sneaky things regarding targeting if you can have two character vehicles or character monsters 3" from each other.
Two talon Masters, two NDK GM or two DPs are much harder to kill with shoting in 9th.
|
If you have to kill, then kill in the best manner. If you slaughter, then slaughter in the best manner. Let one of you sharpen his knife so his animal feels no pain. |

Dont count on using much vigilius books either as they got banned from tournament game and as people follow like lemmings those...like board minimum size that was chosen just for money and is now ironclad despite minimum by definition is not optimal. But got to reward gw and itc organisers for profit grabbing moves eh.

Viglus didn't get banned from tournies, just the specialist detachments did. you can still use the other stuff from it, such as the black legion stuff, the chaos renegades tactics etc

Further thoughts on the wound allocation?
Again, this is highly situational, but for mix equipment units, you’ll need to be wary of maintaining squad coherency with your wound allocation.
Because if you allocate poorly, should stuff start dying, you risk losing even more due to broken coherency.
It’s so situational, my brain again refuses to visualise examples. But I’m sure someone more with it and knowledgable can!

As a new player who was only just getting used to 8th before the edition change it is good to hear everything I've learnt is still valid!
Much like the OP I am a bit lost as to what is and isn't required now and what it is worth buying. I've got the 8th BRB, Codex and CA2018. I had been saving up to get cards and CA2019 plus maybe a PA book. Is it worth getting any of that now or just wafting for new content?

The warhammer 40K app has 5 indexes in the available rules if you are a subscriber.

Well, unless you plan to play more 8e, you can safely skip CA2019 & the cards.
You'll want the 9e book.
CA2020 has the current (for the moment) 9e pts. So almost definitely that one.
Then maybe wichever PA book applies to your army.
After that buy the 9e Codex book(s) for your forces as they arrive.
