No, I like having 5 armies. I would focus on one while I'm starting, but once I'm adequate with it I like moving to others. Gives me different armies to play when I want to, [though 5 may be a little too many, since I now feel like I spend more per year on rulebooks than I do on minis]

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades!

That's what everyone says... at first.

More seriously, speaking as someone who just got into the hobby a couple years ago - I get a lot of joy out of building/painting/learning different armies. I like reading through different codexes to get a sense for how armies play. I like the variety and the lore. There's enough overlap in skills (firing lines, gauging movement and distance, estimating relative strength and target priority) that you're getting better at the game itself regardless of who you're playing, and I haven't found it difficult to keep track of stratagems/special rules between my couple armies.

If your goal is just to build an army, get good with it, and take it to tournaments, definitely worth focusing on SM. No shortage of units right now, strong at the tournament level. But if you enjoy the hobby and worldbuilding aspects at all, I think it's worth hanging onto another army.

It's also worth noting that a lot of tournament players will switch armies as the meta changes. Not something to aim for right off the bat, but the "serious" local players who have been in the hobby for a while have multiple complete armies in their cabinets.

yeah I am not planning in getting too sweaty about tournaments but it would be cool personally to be somewhat more adept about using an army and all of its units pretty well.

I stopped putting together the necrons from the indomitus box since I just didn't like them as much as I did at first. I will still hold on to them for a month before I decide to sell them on eBay.

I finished building the half of indomitus sm box.

I ordered 2 captains/chaplains, infiltrators, Primaris Inceptors and the eliminators. Basically enough to run 2 small teams against each other with completely different units/skills. I got 2 war suits for each of them as well. I am looking forward to putting them together this weekend and be able to run the indomitus army vs a different SM army/units. That sounds to me more exciting than running two completely different armies. It is bonus points that I also really like all of the models I got.

Cheers

do you have a big enough SM army to run 2 2,000 pt armies against each other?

Technically yes, it is all just in epic scale.

Seriously why would i want to play a game that big in normal scale? it doesn't even sound fun.

I just want to be able to run 500-1,000pt 2 hand games on my work desk every night with the smaller board size and I can then run 2k points downstairs on the weekends.

But, but, "those are only minimum table sizes"

I remember that was the argument when some of us called it out as being forced on us.

No I don't think so. I certainly wouldn't have gone as far as i did though.

I recommend everyone has at least 2 to start with as then you can fight them against each other with someone. Always a good way to introduce other people and give you more opportunities to play with your dudes.

I recommend 3 as probably the most you realistically want as this will stop you from getting snowed under in projects which can cause it's own problems. For me it was project paralisys. I had so much to do I just couldn't face it and everything else suffered because of it. I went from 9 armies to 2 over the space of about 2 year's and I don't regret a thing about it. Apart from a few conversions a friend did for me. The weight that came off my shoulders that I didn't realise I was carrying in unfinished projects and armies was immense.

There was a flip side though, I got a good bit of cash back and used it to primaris my BA and massively upgrade my eldar. I had also became a better modeller and painter over the year's and I applied it all to the new stuff I got. Now I don't even have a pile of shame and I'm so happy with how my stuff looks. So much so I'm even thinking of display cases or shelves for it. That would never have happened before. A tale of caution I suppose for an unwary traveller to beware of doing too much.

I suggest everyone should have a marine army, flavour to taste. Then a non marine one, again any choice. The 3rd should be as different to those 2 as you can. In my own example I have BA and CWE so in the future I want for my 3rd army choice to be no imperial, no xenos and no marine's. I do realise that the only choice left there is chaos daemons or hopefully a new faction to come in future so here's hoping because I'm not crazy on the daemons range.

Hope this helps someone.

Cheers.

@ Kryczek: You want Orks. Things CWE and Marines have in common is smooth, rounded plates, elite models, strong psykers. Generally “clean” paint schemes. Good shooting. (Love in the rules dept. )

Orks get you as far from smooth, organic and *subtle* as you can get.

yeah daemons or chaos don't appeal to me.

I have a 1250 sm army (indomitus + war suit) put together, with clean mould lines and waiting to be primed this week. I had put together all of the marine half from the indomitus and I was working my way through the Necron half when I just wasn't feeling them so much anymore. I instead ordered the warsuit, put it together in a day and ordered some new sm captains, vanguards, eliminators, chief librarian, inceptors, another warsuit and few more SM units, which I am really looking forward to putting together.

By the weekend I will have 2 1600pt SM armies and I REALLY like all of the units. I could potentially just let a friend run a second army and since I would know it well it would be easier to teach. Plus I found some 3d printed accent outlines for the bases which I am going to get to differentiate if I play with the same color army on the same table.

Nowadays, I just go with my gut so if putting the Necrons for me started to feel like a chore and I rather put together more Marine units then I will go with what is fun for me. I will still keep the Necrons for a few more weeks and maybe they might peak my interest again. But if they don't I might just dump them on eBay. I would only keep the 3 new destroyers I put together since those models are pretty cool.

true that

Thankfully there are like 8 places near my house where people play boardgames but given current circumstances, then I will be playing 2 hand solo for a minute.

It was this mess that got me into board gaming. Tried a bunch of euros and highly popular stuff, but it was just too fiddly for my taste.

40k felt right at home once I discovered it

cheers

I wouldn't have amassed a massive collection of CSM, Death Guard and Chaos Daemons if I'd known what was coming in 9th. Not only is assembling them a horrendous workload, now I need to pick one army at a time instead of being free to do what the hell I want since I want to play Matched Play games. 40K has now become "the game of Command Points" and it feels like having 3 or 6 less CPs than my opponent will cost me the game, as units are now being designed around spending CPs on them, rather than them kicking arse on their own.

To be fair, since reading the Chaos Knights codex and checking the additional models on Forge World, I would have just gone Chaos Knights instead. Good models, superb lore, some epic third-party bits for them, only a handful of models to make.

yeah that's true, chaos knights look really legit. I have seen plenty of table reports where people just run 4 of them. I might have gone in too far with the marines before taking a second look at the chaos knight but yolo at this point lol

I went all in with the space marines and it would be an absolute workload nightmare for me to do this work for any additional army I would have. If I were to consider a second army at this point it would be the chaos knights. the models look great

If I had it all to do over again I would have gotten one of each army when it was cheap enough to do so and made sure to have kept all my stuff from 3rd ed. 40K and 6th ed. WFB ruleswise

www.classichammer.com

For 4-6th WFB, 2-5th 40k, and similar timeframe gaming

Looking for dice from the new AOS boxed set and Dark Imperium on the cheap. Let me know if you can help.

yeah that would make sense. The figures look amazing but they are WAY over priced. I got started in the indomitus box and then completed a sweet ultramarine army. I added it and it turned out to be quite a bit more than expected lol

I am just glad that's the only army I really like because I can't imagine spending the same amount to built 2 or more 2,000+pt armies.

I am happy with a 3-4,000 sm army that I can rotate around with different units and one codex to practice and study. Got a cheap hard copy of 8 and I will wait for the new one in a month

Absolutely not, I like having several armies for variety, same reason why I more or less have at least one of every unit in each army for even more variety (which explains why all my armies are 5000+ pts...)

My biggest regret when it comes to 40k is actually that I sold one of my armies (Orks) back in...6th or 7th.

Yeah it is what I am doing with my SM army. I am buying one of each unit so I can have a LOT of variety, they got all of the models so I will probably have a 7,000 pt army too.

I would be happy with such a force and finding new ways to play it. I have some necrons from the indomitus box but most of them are on sprues since I am having a lot more fun with the marines.

What are your thoughts on Chaos Marines?

Thousand Sons seems solid, even with the Smite-nerf.

As for World Eaters ...ehh, only played them once in 9th, sort of with the intention of loosing, so I can't really judge them yet.
They can probably work pretty well, especially once they get additional wounds on their MEQ's and TEQ's. At the end of the day they're still Marines.

Thing with me is that I have 6 to 7 in each genre that I have an affinity for, and that is not counting things like using Historical miniatures as Fantasy armies. Having said that, getting two or three reasonably sized armies is not a bad idea. When you get tired/frustrated with one army, you play with the next one either in painting or gaming.

that's cool, I didn't want to get into too many armies so the SM seemed perfect for me. I liked their units and vehicles more than any other army.

I made some research and looked at tournament lists to see what was both viable and cool looking and this is what I ended up buying this week.

-Indomitus Box Space Marines
-marneus calgar
-Roboute Guilliman
-Chief Librarian TIGURIUS

-Primaris Lieutenant with Power Sword
- Primaris Librarian in Phobos Armour -
Primaris Apothecary
-Primaris Chaplain Plastic
- PRIMARIS Lieutenant in PHOBOS Armour

-2 squads of 3x Aggressors
-2 squads of 3x PRIMARIS ELIMINATORS
-Vanguard Veteran 5 Squad
-Centurion Devastator Squad
-Centurion Assault Squad
-Inceptors
-Devastator Squad

-10x incursors
-10x infiltrators
-10x intercessors
-10x hellblasters

-2x Stormtalon Gunship
-2 repulsor executioners
-2x Primaris Invictor Tactical Warsuit
-DropPod
-Whirlwind
-Primaris dreadnought
-Thunderhammer

The army has so many vehicles and approaches that I figure I couldn't get bored.

If I wanted to spice it up, I would just try a different approach with the many different vehicles and units I have.

When you think about it, SM in reality are like 2 or 3 armies in one since GW milks them so much.

I will probably end up getting a few of the new gladiators, they look pretty legit.

Cheers

I did indeed start out with one army, many moons ago, and it was with Tyranids.

Fancied an army of genestealers and it worked well as I learned the rules of Rogue Trader and moved on to Tyranids a little later on. You don't mind losing so much as Tyranids are essentially the "doom" of the 40K universe, and would probably not route for them to win for that reason. After all, the doom is inevitable...

Having returned to the hobby I've been collecting a Harlequin patrol, ready for 9th edition and when their new codex drops. Its a small faction of few models but with many options, so its easy to get going but challenging to master. Didn't think much of them initially, but Kill Team introduced me to them and they won out in the end.

If you're not sure which faction to go with then Kill Team is a good way to try out different factions.

Casual gaming, mostly solo-coop these days.

I have 1,000 points of necrons from the indomitus box so I can wait and see if they are viable in 9th.

I have over 5,000 points of Ultra Marines in all of their different units/vehicles so it is more than enough to play any approach I could want to take.

So in a way, I have like 3 armies now lol

If you already have the models then might as well go with the codices, while you're at it.

The new necron models are pretty cool, don't you think? pleased with the ones in the Recruit edition and might consider a 40K combat patrol if the Harlequin codex is going to be a while.

I ordered almost every space marine model (I didnt like any of the "legacy" marines so I didnt get those) and I am putting them together as they get delivered, so you can imagine how much plastic that is. I also got every sanctum sector terrain kit so I am putting those together as they get deliver.

While I enjoy the process of putting together the models while listening to Horus Heresy audiobooks (please no spoilers) tbh it is not something I would like to do again for another army. I will certainly do it again for the occasional model, like the new gladiator marine tank coming out soon.

The necron army included in the indomitus its pretty legit. I only assembled the new destroyers since I liked their look. I am more excited to pin much different space marine units against each other than to build other armies. I am very interested in getting to know all of the units I got and seeing how creative I can get with different lists.

If I could start again I would only have my marines and (now) the Lumineth. Unfortunately I like so many models that I tend to get armies just for some of the range (Orks) or there is one model I love so much I have an army just so I can use it (Legions of Nagash). This last one in particular is an issue as I like a lot of other armies more than this for AoS but I can’t bear to not have Nagash and then not use him in games!

Same with Orks I love a lot of the new range when 8th edition was out like the buggies and now Ghaz but I know that even though I’ve got a few things to get for my waagh I’ll end up just getting more and more marines

I haven’t the time or finances to have lots of armies just a couple to build up when new things come round. And now my son is getting in to the hobby the stand alone boxed games like Warcry and blood bowl would be better for him to play than the big battles so money would be better spent on those for me than £100s on more marines or skellies

Nah I like the lore or the models or both

So I end up with thousands of models but I like all of them for different reasons.

What chapter marines do you have? I am glad to have a complete marine army but tbh I find their pricing to be ridiculous. I spent quite a bit last week on a 5,000 pt marine army so I will have more than enough to play with and get to know.

Nah I like the lore or the models or both

So I end up with thousands of models but I like all of them for different reasons.

the models are second to none

If I could start 3E all over again, from the start, I would got Chaos Daemons... This way I could use my army in both 40k and WFB... At the time about two thirds of my friends played WFB...

I will not rest until the Tabletop Imperial Guard has been reduced to complete mediocrity. This is completely reflected in the lore.
