Deep Frier of Mount Doom

I remember when this show came out on the paid Youtube Red premium service and that it got a fair amount of good praise from fans. It showed up this weekend on Netflix and I binged the first season. Overall it was a good show absolutely dripping with 80s nostalgia (both Karate Kid and general 80s) to the point that even I, as a child of the 80s, had my fill. They had some interesting takes that flip the script (albeit predictably) on the original movie.

Spoiler:
I'd have preferred if the final episode wasn't almost a retelling of the first movie (even moreso than Force Awakens was of Star Wars: ANH) with one simple twist and a big final reveal. I liked the deeper exploration of the Cobra Kai villains of the first movie but would have preferred if the more nuanced take on the now sensai had been a bit more permanent instead of turning basically into the old Cobra Kai villainy. I'd have preferred if they had won on a more upbeat and honorable note and then introduced the class of cultures/battle of the soul of the dojo with the return in the final scene of the original sensei).

A 3rd season is in the works produced by Netflix. Just a fyi.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

I watched them both when they were on youtube.

First season

Spoiler:
Firstly, I enjoy that they explore that Dani was as much of a as Johnny in the karate kid movies.

Second Season

Spoiler:
Second season had its moments but was not as strong as the first season imo. I also really really don't like the Robbie character, he's just a bit blank and lacks substance. Main issues with the second season was Kreese I think, he's a good villain and I like that it shows he is a liar and manipulator, but it was all a bit too blatant from the start and lacked intelligence in writing that I think I am use to nowadays with TV writing for such machiavellian characters.

Looking forward to season 3 though

I've been listening to Cobra Kai's soundtrack since the first season dropped (I love me some oldies, especially ones I've never heard of - Guardians of the Galaxy 2 was good for that too) and it's been the number one temptation to subscribe to Youtube's dumb premium service. I'm glad I held out because it wouldn't have been worth another monthly subscription, but really, few things are.

Anyway, I've just finished season 1 and I really liked it, I don't want to get into the specifics because it's just that good a watch - but I will say I really appreciated the direct callout to Rocky 3 in one of the later episodes.

I wasn't a super huge fan of the original movies, but I still binged both seasons over the last couple days and really enjoyed it. I could have done without a lot of the teenage lovers triangle drama, but I guess thats what happens when you have a story about teens. It was nice seeing the old characters and how they still got the original cast members for cameos here and there too, even daniel's mom and Johnny's old cobra kai buddies doing a reunion. Looking forward to season 3

I watched the first two episodes free on Youtube a year or so ago. I was really impressed, especially by Billy Zabka. I haven't got round to watching the remaining episodes yet, maybe I'll binge watch all 3 seasons when the third one releases.

Knowing Netflix the chances of the 3rd season being the final one are pretty high.

I watched the first season from beginning to end but honestly skimmed through the second (only watching the last episode in full) just to get the gist of what happened. I don't know if it was the reviews of the second being worse that turned me off more or if it was the overly nostalgic (but still good) aspects of the first. I'm still excited to see what comes in the third season though.

Just as a heads up Netflix bought 3 seasons of this from youtube. The third season was already done. If this is true to form (ala Lucifer, Arrested Development, etc.) we'll get 2-3 seasons out of netflix as well which is good since the writer has said it's meant to be a 5-6 season show.

I've only ever seen the first one of the original Karate Kid movies, and I enjoyed it very much. Is this show very much along the same lines as that show, or is it totally different? The trailer on Netflix left me with more questions than answers, and actually left me wondering if they are flipping the hero and villain roles here (between Daniel-san and Johnny). I'm kind of interested, but possibly not if they are turning the original hero into a villain.

No, without giving away too much, the roles flip back and forth with both of them doing what they think is right, and end up being wrong, and lessons get learned the hard way. But that's only half the story, there's the kids stories too. I think it's been at least 20 years since I've seen any of the movies, just remember bits and pieces, but they do flashbacks a lot when they have to remind you of stuff. Which is another cool thing about how they got a lot of the original cast back even if it's just for a few cameos.

So they are still rivals, but there's a few funny Broments too.

Just finished S1.

Honestly one of the most entertaining things I've seen in ages. I fail to see how anyone with even a modicum of affection for the movies wouldn't think the same.

Season 3 trailer is here!

This show was my 'biggest surprise' for 2020. It can be cheesy. But it's surprisingly good. William Zabka was a revelation to me.

Looks good. I wasn't a fan of the second season but I enjoyed the first. I was really hoping that Johnny would train with Daniel in this season to develop his own style that melds the two into a third. Hopefully that will happen and it won't be just a buddy cop partnership.
