Subject: What Factions are missing from Warhammer Underworlds?
|

Crazy Marauder Horseman

After seeing the new Direchasm expansion for underworlds, one thing in particular popped out to me. The new warbands are not another Stormcast Warband and another Warband for an existing faction, but two new warbands for two factions that have yet to see support in Warhammer Underworlds. I did a bit of looking, and there are a few factions yet to see support in underworlds. Here is my list:
Cities of Sigmar
Idoneth Deepkin
Ossiarch Bonereapers
Sons of Behemat
I don't believe that they will add SoB to Underworlds. That would be like adding Imperial Knights to Kill Team. Aside from that, I see no reason why the other three factions have no support.

Two previews ago GW teased a skink for the Direchasm Seraphon warband, so it's coming.

That's actually not *entirely* true. White Dwarf actually had a bonus warscroll card and game mode to field a Chaos Gargant in Underworlds, so you can almost technically say that there already is a SoB in the game.

Idoneth Deepkin and Ossiarch Bonereapers seem like the obvious missing pieces. Cities of Sigmar always felt like a Grand Alliance book that exist only to keep some existing models on life support. I don't think that GW has any plans for them unless they are going for a total range revamp.
I am not familiar with recent AoS lore but from what I have understood, Goblin Skypirates and Soulblight Vampires have been hinted in the fluff. I am not sure how they would fit in the Underworlds setting though. Other than that, maybe Undivided Chaos warband?

There is an undivided chaos warband, godsworn hunt. All of the chaos armies have a faction represented, or rather will once diregasm gets its release.
As others have mentioned it's just Cities, Idoneth, and OBR after that (obviously omitting Sons). However that is only in terms of battletomes; there are some allegiances and army sub-themes that are not represented. Bonesplittaz are perhaps the most notable, and Soulblight are another. Both are armies that can reasonably be added to the list.
Stormcast don't have a vanguard chamber option, odd since that would be the chamber most likely to be deployed for this sort of thing. Khorne, Nurgle, and Slaanesh don't have any daemons. Skaven have a large number of unrepresented options; Skryre, Pestilens, Moulder, and Eshin could all make for excellent warbands. A necromancer & zombies band for Legions of Nagash would fit right in. Finally, Mawtribes have a choice from the beastclaw side of things but not one from the gutbuster side.
Also worth nothing that Cities of Sigmar is an absolute gold mine of potential choices, as warbands could be based off different cities and contain completely different options.
Finally there is the potential for warbands from unreleased armies, we have one for Gitmob Grots after all.

Must use opportunity for a new Soulblight vampire and a couple of human followers/thralls.
The Bonereapers would be interesting as well
The new Shadowstalkers look perfect for it.
A Warlock Engineer affiliated with Ikrit could have some ...wonderful toys.
Deepkin have good posisbilities
Necromancer and risen dead
A Moulder Beastmaster hiding behind a Rat Ogre
Scourge Privateer and her crew (Please make it look like Arika Zenth)

Careful; Cathay, Araby, Nippon and a few others were mentioned a lot in Old World and of them none got an army. Araby got one in Warmaster and the Amazonians did appear in Mordhiem and I'm sure a few others did too. Undersea nyads have also been mentioned a few times for Sylvaneth as a counterpart undersea army of the Everqueen, yet we've not seen a hint of such appear for her forces let alone a second themed army.

Well Nippon and Amazons did have army lists back in 2nd ed and faded in 3rd.....
but agreed there are alot of possbilities for alot of cool stuff in the lore - if they want to make them.

Well, I see that as being a rather different case. The Old World was a rough analogy to the real world and those factions were basically just space fillers to put something on those continents. And the early editions of WHFB were decades ago, too old to be of relevance for reference now. The nyads are indeed mentioned but not as a multi-realm faction with plentiful armies, and I note we already have an Order undersea faction.
Grotbag Scuttlers are put in direct competition with KO in multiple books, and their origins are even touched on in the Gloomspite book. Their theoretical niche is one that Destruction has nothing in, and Destruction is low on the army count to boot. Hints of them have increased over time, originally just being a single line of fluff in the first edition KO book. And it does not take a community genius to know that even halfway-competent goblin sky pirates would sell so fast and hard we'd need another Slaanesh release. One thing I thought that would be interesting was Araby was said to be utilizing elementals in their army such as the equivalent of djinns and ifrits. These are possibilities to explore using Underworlds and WarCry to see if there would be interest in developing further.

Cities of Sigmar I think will end up separated into different warbands. There's only so many factions to milk in AoS and we're quickly approaching most of them being completed, and you can only 'reimagine' S1 warbands so many times. So we could see an Order of Azyr warband, a Black Ark Corsair warband, maybe a mercenary/treasure hunter warband made up of a human, dwarf, elf, etc.

Any of those warbands would be great but there are still quite a few different elements - see Soulblight, Skaven Clans, Deepkin, Bonereapers,
Various interesting people from the many Cities of Sigmar in the Shadespire novel
