Well, being as we do the lockdown dance once again, White Dwarf are providing solo rules for AoS...

...which could keep us ticking over until the clubs are open again.

Might as well throw out some solo rules for 40k/Kill Team while they're at it.

Looks like "Hero-Hammer", and can be played cooperatively too. Not sure what they can accomplish in six pages, but will give it a shot all the same.

I wonder if it will be the ones from the first lockdown they posted on the WC site.

I'd assume the writer of Hinterlands is on that team lead by Jervis.

The timing is more coincidence than anything else.

I wouldn't hope for too much...

Yeah, I'm not hoping for much...

Corona been with us buggering gaming for half a year now. Plenty of time since then to write. Sure while it wasn't known there would be another lockdown specifically now anybody with some common sense could know gaming in FLGS's, tournaments etc would be anything from hard to impossible for long time and could be even up to year from now.

Sure maybe they amidst corona decided totally unrelated write solo gaming rules.

Doubt it will amount to it, but Warcry's Mindstealer seems like a great villian for such a questy game. Screwing with the heroes minds and picking them off one-by-one.

All that jazz.

I've given the co-op rules from Glymmsforge article a go recently, and while super-simplistic, they were also extremely fun. It turns out the AoS rules really shine when you let the heroes be the main focus of the game. I was even planning on expanding the rules to allow other factions than Nighthaunt be the opponent, but I will wait and see how the "official" expanded ruleset does it, i imagine it'll be similar in scope.

Point is, AoS makes for a fun co-op experience, this way, I really recommend giving it a try. Or even solo, if you have no one around willing to play at all.

Yeah, there is something there which can lead to a more developed ruleset. Be nice it it came in a box set like the AT rule set with dice, cards, warscrolls and all that lovely stuff.

Out of curiosity I set up a Gauntlet style board with a Knight Incantor battling his way through blue'n'brimestone horrors, from destructable spawning points. Considering it was just the AoS Getting Started Magazine and a box of horrors it was enjoyable. With other players it would be easy enough to add Pink horrors to up the challenge.

Since the glymmsforge thing had no win condition, only constant respawning missions till you die, we ended up running a "boss battle" with Kurdoss instead of knight of shrouds.
(which only served to underscore how weak nighthaunts are, but that's another issue).

For the Troggoth Slayer's quest they have a new boxset with enough Troggoth models, due for release...

The issue came out today and as expected it is a revised version of GlymmsForge.

Most notable differences are the party's maximum size increased to 5, while the Hero wounds are reduced to 7 or less. While it's loose enough for one to use enemy units of choice, its still designed with the Soul Wars starter set in mind. However, the article now adds Bloodborne and Gloomspite factions with equally detailed rules.

As with Glymmsforge, it requires a battletome for a character's allegiance abilities which they obtain from a loot result table. If you have multiple heroes from different factions its going to get a bit pricey.

Much like AoS: Skirmish and Warcry, there is an opportunity for a new product that expands on these rules. I look forward to seeing what comes next.

Errata! The article is actually 16 pages, not 6. My bad.

lol, i am apparently GW-tier game dev, they incorporated a bunch of ideas that i used (like "threat levels").
Overall, it's a nice foundation, but i really wish they added a lot more to it than just tweaked the basics and slapped khorne and gobbos on.

To be honest, Cronch, it doesn't take a PhD to make a well written and fun game - whether its traditional or digital. If you came up with similar ideas then I'd take that as a good omen.

As a youngster I cobbled together a basic system for solitaire-play Space Crusade. That was back in the days when playing a board game on your own was considered "sad and pathetic", and became discouraged. But today theres loads of "professional" games that are using the exact same methods of spawning points and "behaviour tables"!

I suppose then I ought to shape up and get a job as a professional game designer already! But seriously, I have little time for "professional" swagger and look for potential instead. I'd take an educated guess and say that Sam came up with these solo-coop rules on his own time, and if GW is smart they'll let him take it further into a rule set of its own, that comes with a few components such as a D20 dice, cards etc. With the current crisis and player needs - now is the perfect time.

And while they're at it, theres scope for a retail version of Duels of the Crystal Labyrinth too.
