But it is nice that some level of "finesse" is required.

Didn’t get as far as I hoped this weekend, but still broke the back of the unit. It’s getting late in the day, but might build some Trolls.

Gonna do another painting session in the week I think, get these finished off, and make a start on the riders.

Very much agreed. Sure, it’s simple enough to touch up, but being neat in the first place keeps it to a minimum.

Chatting away with my mate, who is light years ahead of me in terms of ability, we agreed that the consistency of Contrast is a great way to demonstrate where you want to water your regular acrylics to.

Minor progress, but progress all the same. I’ve now got 6 Trolls built, with three more on sprue.

Really, really enjoying this kit. It may not look at it on the surface, but there’s rather a lot of options, and it’s pretty interchangeable. Should be able to build the remaining three, and have no two look overly similar.

Double handed club could’ve done with an alternative head, but let’s be honest that’s a pretty easy conversion from more or less whatever you’ve got lying around.

Next up Trolls wise will be researching different paint schemes, see if anything tickles my fancy.

That kit looks great. Loads of character. They remind me of the old metal stone trolls from yesteryear. And the best thing I reckon trolls should be quick enough to paint. Maybe not six at once though.

Will definitely be done in batches of three!

Lips, teef, gums and some basing done tonight.

Not entirely happy with them - but until they’ve got their riders, they are of course incomplete. So judgement withheld!

Video sessions are seriously helping, as I work best in a hubbub. It also gives me set project time, which again favours me.

Got another one this evening, 7:30-8:30, in which I intend to make a start on their riders.d

Contrast wise, I’ve been recommended doing Gryph Charger Grey, then Black Templar for a better, already highlighted black.

Am going to give it a bash, see how I like it.

Tried the Goblins using Contrast, and I don’t like it at all. It might just be the colours I used, but it all looks super washed out.

Plus side, I should be able to undercoat them black without obliterating any detail.

In a huff with that, instead did the red on 20 Herd Squigs.

Jokes aside,gobbos looking washed out isn't that bad imo. Afterall it's a bunch of mushroom drug addicts.
Have you considered a drybrush of a stronger green?/ colour for the highlighting?

Think I might persevere with them.

With Contrast, I find I like the colours better the next morning, as if they take time to develop.

Defo gonna do the infantry Gobbos traditional though - when I get around to them.

This is my current work bench, left since Thursday as I was kinda put out by how much I didn’t like my attempts at the Gobbos.

Today though? Look at it! With your eyes! A sea of red and geet big teef!

In short? Looking at these, and with another 20 Here Squigs already completed? I’ve come too far to stop now. And given there’s arse all to do in a Tier 4 lockdown, I’ll be smashing through these and the remainder (25 more Hoppers and 2 Manglers) over Christmas, aiming to enter the New Year with a fully painted, predominantly Squig army.

Ah yes, i love the pile of procastination and it's invariably highly inspiring capability aswell... I do however proclaim that my pile of shame has been thoughtfully cleared before it's expanse soonish...

Oh I’m super chuffed with the Squigs, it’s just the Riders I wasn’t originally happy with. But having gone away in a huff with myself, and having come back with fresh eyes, I’m happy enough with them.

Just my style of prose is all.

Tonight I’m doing another video painting sesh (invites to the discord via PM for anyone interested) and intend to get the Riders done, and finish off the second herd (touch up splashed areas, then gums, teef and tongues).

At that point, I’ll have 740 points painted. Add in a character or two, and I’m ready to get absolutely blootered in my first games. Well. Whenever I can sadly game again.

It may not look like it, but PROGRESS!

2nd and currently final Squig Herd all tidied up following the Blood Angels Red. Took about an hour, then I had me dinner. And now I’m entering an Enchilada enforced food coma.

Video session went pretty well, and was nice to see some other Dakkanauts join me.

Going for another video session tonight.

Reckon I’ll polish off the Gobbos and the Herd Squigs. Maybe even get the Gobbos glued atop their psychotic mounts.

In the meantime, I think a Bond film, and building more Squig Hoppers (well, 10 Hoppers and 5 Bounders)

Decent progress made. Finished and based 20 Herd Squigs, and 10 Hopper Squigs.

Army is coming along nicely, and I may have it finished by the end of the month.

I keep loving the brightness of it all, they give me a middlehammer feel with that bright red- though I don't think goblin green bases are a necessity .

Looking good, I've been thinking about starting up a Gloomspite Gitz army after enjoying painting up and playing with them in Underworlds.

The based stuff. Probably going to make a start on a Mangler tonight, as I’ve got through so much of the base infantry.

Are the base rims going to remain white? Seems a tad distracting?

Nah. First 20 Herd Squigs have a grey rim. The ones here will have a brown, I think, as I tend to use the rims for unit identification.

Just need to pick through my paints, find something suitable.

First Mangler Squig is currently drying in the booth. Once dry, I’ll check it for even coverage and touch up where needed.

Any plans of the big bouncers?
The colossal and spitter are both great fun to paint and use.
The colossal is easily one of the fastest things to paint for its points and it’s always amazingly fun on the table.

Big boy number 1 around 40% done. Giving it a rest for now, as I swear the colours of Contrast paints need time to develop, and I’ll need to do some touching up on the red areas, where one brushstroke is more noticeable.

Cracked on building the remaining Hoppers....and seem to have 10 more I swear I didn’t buy!

Sticking with red for the Squigs, as I’m rather unimaginative!

It’s the Contrast wot duz it! And a modicum of talent (only a modicum, mind!)

Back to work tomorrow, and I may book off a week at the end of January/beginning of February. Intent is to finish off whatever remains of the Gloomspite, and get more of my Ossiarchs done.

Timing is chosen to allow payday to roll around again (just under three weeks to go) so I can stock up on whatever I need.

Video sessions are most definitely helping in terms of stamina as well. If the convo is good (tonight Paul and I were discussing the Disney+ future as sketched out for Star Wars and Marvel) then I barely notice the passage of time.

Another idea to keep the painting bug biting is to buy an Interesting Model each month, and dedicate a week to getting it painted. Likely to stick with GW, at least when those collectible coins are available again, as the IM will help me to hit the £60 spend.

Really looking forward to being able to get a game in with them as well, even though I will wind up with my arse handed to me!

Important addendum

The Tinboy* has most definitely been converted! Just glanced at the Hoppers I built tonight, and thought “god you look rubbish in grey, will get you painted soon”.

I’ve never had such a thought before, as my extensive pile of shame can attest!

*A grognard’s term for someone who rarely if ever paints their models.
