I found a lot of Epic boxes in a second-hand market. Everything was still sealed or almost new (sprues pratically intact). Just 5€ per box!

I've started painting and I've seen that the old 5-figures squared bases have space for a sort of "pod" or "stick" or "little pole" (I don't know another word to describe it) that must be glued in them. It is needed in the game? Has some usefulness? Why the bases have that detail?

Thanks!

IIRC it was quite literally for a little flagpole to denote command stands.

Oh thanks! So I can eliminate them by the stands I painted? They are useful no more? They were there just for the commands then?

Command stands. Captains and nobz and suchlike. Each formation had a commander and you put a flagpole on the stand to show which that was.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

It's been a while, but if you're confident about either your paint job or the models you're using, and you're not in the mood for doing any banners, then sure. Don't forget the 'original' models in the box were all identical, the difference between a Tactical, Assault or Devastator stand was what colour base you used!

I see tactical marines with bolters, assault ones with swords and I can make an assault stand using two heavy weapons armed marines.

Oh yes Joe, but I'm talking about "straight out of the box on release", all the marine models were basic bolters. It's hard to find a good picture for Space Marine, but if you look at 2nd Ed Blood Bowl, all the in-the-box orcs and humans were the same basic model, you used coloured rings around the bases to distinguish positions. It wasn't until the metal teams followed that they became individualised. It was just how the games were sold then.

Exactly this! In ye days of old epic, every mini was monopose plastic pieces and flags were used to identify the detachments. The flagpole denoted which stand the detachment commender was on as well.

What exists now for epic makes all that sound very anachronistic indeed. Models even have individual poses now!

"The larger point though, is that as players, we have more control over what the game looks and feels like than most of us are willing to use in order to solve our own problems"

I have the minis with the same pose. The difference is the heavy weapon one and the assault one. But the minis of one type have the same pose. Sergeants are the same too, everyone has the power gauntlet.

I can use anyway use the poles to put some interesting flags. But I think I will remove them from the common troops stand.
