Ok guys, help a girl out! My husband hasn’t been able to play a game in a while obviously due to COVID, so I have stepped up as the dutiful wife and am learning to play. We’ve had a few mini games just for me to grasp the basics, like ‘Warhammer for Dummies’ level but I’m wanting to build a small-ish army of my own to play him with as I get better. He plays Blood Angels and has a wide range of models in his collection. I like the look of the Chaos armies, predominantly close combat/melee. So what I’m looking for is any and all advice, tips & tricks, suggestions for lists, blog for follow etc. Any reply is greatly appreciated and I thank you in advance

As a Chaos player myself, welcome to the cult of the Dark Gods!

Right now, Chaos Space Marines (Heretic Astartes) are in kind of a rough spot. Their major enemies, the Space Marines, just got a major upgrade in that they all have two Wounds each, but Chaos hasn't seen that boost yet. However, that's not to say we're useless; just at a disadvantage.

I don't know enough to make definitive statements about close combat units for Chaos, but I'd recommend some basic Chaos Space Marines troops with chainswords for the meat-and-potatoes.

Hope that helps get this thread moving!

Death Guard got a new codex, so they benefit from the +1 Wound. Standard CSMs haven't yet.

I'm pretty new to chaos as well, started them as my second army as Alpha Legion. I bought the start collecting box as a basis and then Daemon Prince, and I use Delaque gangers from Necromunda as cultists. I also bought ambull from necromunda and I added some guns to him to get the third obliterator and using the second one as conversion material for another daemon prince. Then I bought a hellbrute cause they aren't bad cause they're cheap and make a good distraction. The master of possession in the start collecting can count as sorcerer with jump pack.

So quick List based off first purchases

Battalion: Pts 998

HQ:
Chaos Lord - chainsword, combi bolter
Daemon Prince with wings - x2 Malefic Talons
Sorcerer

Troops:
10 Cultists
5 marines boltgun, chainsword
5 marines boltgun, chainsword

Elite:
Hellbrute with two fists (magnetize tutorial online)

Heavy Support:
3X Obliterator

Take mark of Slaanesh to shoot twice with oblits with endless cacophony stratagem and get intoxicating elixir relic for daemon prince. And then read over the psychic powers, and choose whatever fits. Diabolic strength is decent on prince as well. Warptime for extra movement on your sorcerer to cast on hellbrute or prince. Etc..

Two points left over so you could put some chainaxes on Lord and an aspiring champion to get an even 1000.

That has a tournament-winning list of close-combat CSMs, mostly with Possessed. I got it from the Chaos Space Marines Tactica page, so take it with a grain of salt, but it seems to me like a solid mechanical list.

If you're looking for something a little more lore-based, maybe Khorne Berzerkers?

Looks pretty good to me except one small thing. Abaddon cannot have a Mark of Khorne as he has the Mark of Chaos Ascendant which has it's own special rules. Luckily this is a small matter as the Mark of Chaos Ascendant counts as a Mark for each god at the same time in addition to its own special effect, so it's actually a boon on top of this army list rather than a problem. Just thought I'd mention this to make sure there is no confusion down the line for our new devotee to the Dark Gods.
