If you want aspects of the Gods look at some Renegade Chapters.

The Scourged - The Seekers of Truth worked closely with the Inquisition and grew weary of executing innocents. The Chapter Master prayed to know when a man was lying so only the guilty were slain. Tzeentch then cursed the entire Chapter with the ability to hear every lie spoken by mankind whereupon they realise the Imperium is hopelessly corrupt. They go insane and pledge themselves to Tzeentch. In this aspect, Tzeentch can be viewed as the God of Truth/Lies.

The Flawless Host - The Shining Blades were known for their purity of gene-seed, rigid discipline and excelled to the point where they believed they could never be defeated. After a massacre where the Chapter's brilliance was supposedly questioned. Slaanesh's lure proved strong and eventually, the Chapter pledged themselves to the Dark Prince. Here Slaanesh is the God of Perfection.

The Purge - A Warband dedicated to Nurgle that views all life as hopelessly corrupted with the only path to purity lying in death. They have a penchant for biological and chemical weapons. Nurgle is viewed by The Purge as a God of Death.

If Slaanesh is the god of perfection, and The Scourged were trying to perfect their inquisitorial process so they wouldn't execute innocents, why didn't Slaanesh answer their prayers?

Khorne could have equally answered the Flawless Host to make them the best warriors in the galaxy.

And Khorne could equally apply to The Purge. Also, Purity sounds like the kind of thing which would attract Slaanesh.

This is part of what the OP meant, the overly broad and undefined portfolios of the gods make them basically interchangeable with just a slight tweak to their followers.

Well, sort of how gods and godesses work IRL... Is not like IP lawyers are working in the heavens/hell so that each divinity only works in his own field.

However on the tabletop most of it is Cadia, Catatchan and general armour. GW has done a few metal ranges of alternate designs in the past, but they were short lived. The new Killteam is introducing a new one to plastic which is the first in years.

Short lived? They've been around from 2nd to 6th edition. Then there was DKOK and Elysians that came around 5th edition. DKOK is obviously still kicking, Elysians died off around 7th.

Reducing Slaanesh to 'sex' misses the point completely.

Slaanesh is about excess.

Agreed.

Excess Sex.

Slaanesh Is a victim of repeated misunderstanding, memes and GW concentrating on poorly portraying the other 3 major gods and leaving Slaanesh to fend for his/her/their/them selves.

Slaanesh is about excess.

People will aim to meet basic needs first over more abstract needs. See Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. For many people within the Imperium, who are poor, overworked, on the brink of starvation or eating horrible food, and with little in the way of leisure time outside of officially sanctioned religious festivals or other such events, they would probably seek to meet all these neglected needs and hence their popular portrayal of Slaanesh as offering to meet these base desires of Lust, Gluttony, Sloth, and Avarice. Only Slaanesh is about excess so they take things to an extreme.

It probably also helps these needs are relatively easy to show in artwork compared to more esoteric pleasures.

I believe the most accurate background of Slaanesh is decadence and not excess. Or at least "excess" is a negative byproduct of decadent culture. The eldar, having reached an "apex" of civilisation epitomise this - their tragedy is their great achievements being undermined by a decadent society enabling destructive impulse.

Decadence is fine, excessive decadence where you sacrifice slaves to drink their blood with wine and make super drugs from their psychic death echo is not.

It's about how an obsession over something - anything, even small things - taken to the extreme can lead to dangerous corrupting levels of excess.

Putting it down as decadence is almost too specific, as Slaaneshi followers can become obsessed with anything to an excessive degree.

Fans getting caught up in the Emperor's Children obsession with perfection (in the HH novels) and assigning it to every slaanesh worshipper that has ever existed hasn't helped either.
Its worth repeating that the various Daemon books don't raise this idea even once. And the legion itself loses its vaunted 'perfectionist' edge _very_ quickly once it goes over to Slaanesh worship. They go to decadent excess and obsession very quickly.

Efficiency is the highest virtue.

The brain bugs and Flanderisation surrounding Slaanesh are a personal pet peeve of mine with 40k.

It's something that I tend to feel a bit closer to given I (and a few others) wrote a whole damned book about it ("Excess" is even in its title!), so I have some behind the scenes knowledge of what GW wants Slaanesh to represent, and also what they don't want to represent Slaanesh.

Insect-Infested Nurgle Chaos Lord

 Mad Doc Grotsnik wrote:

Nurgle is particularly misunderstood. Yes he’s famed for his plagues and illnesses. But it’s not a fixation with stagnation and death. It’s a fixation on life and fecundity. Us mortals? We are but one being. But, kill us? And as we decay we support myriad microbes. If we carry a virus, we’re a host to millions of life forms - and that is what matters to Nurgle, and where his penchant for plague comes in.

He’s not so much about making people ill or diseased as such. Rather he wants as much life in a given square foot as possible, with a host teeming with viruses and germs a pretty efficient way to achieve that. So Nurgle’s “flaw” is viewing all life as equal. The complexity is irrelevant - only the numbers matter.

I wouldn't say he's misunderstood in 40k, just represented differently through the lens of his most famous mortal servants. In AoS, Nurgle is perfectly represented with the above, complete with the cycle of life that's even baked into the rules. 40k? The Death Guard's goals don't entirely align with Nurgle as Morty particularly wants a scorched earth policy. This is even called out in the Plagueburst Crawler entry in the 8th ed codex, Nurgle's own daemons do not like the very concept of it as it is anathema to their whims of their god.

Enemies strive to destroy them (PBCs) at any cost, while even the daemons of Nurgle look at them with askance...

It's buried in some flowery language there, as even I; a man who has an English degree had to look up what "askance" meant. (what? ). It means with an attitude or look of suspicion or disapproval.

Now, GW could be more on the nose with it, but it seems a lot of people view the whims of Morty and his Legion as the same goals of Nurgle. Sure, some DG will have differing goals, but I believe the major misconception comes with people only looking at what the DG want.

I would say Astartes take the worst aspects of each God and multiply it by a hundred because they're designed for conquest and destruction. It's like taking an extreme to an extreme.

It's the Gollum effect. The One Ring corrupted him so fully that he became something more than the Ring could control or influence in the same way it could others. Gollum would never give the Ring to its master, he would keep it for himself he was so corrupted to the desire the ring had built within Gollum for itself.

Chaos Warriors are like that, corrupted to a point where they might even go beyond their patron Gods desires and intents. Indeed its been suggested that the Chaos Gods often/sometimes sabotage their agents activities to prolong the war, to prolong suffering and to mess with things. Abbadon fights not just against the Imperium, but against the corruption of his own warriors and their various patron gods.

Nurgle is actually a really interesting god because he takes the concept of a love of life but focuses on a kind of life most consider a curse. He's not just rot and decay, but the life that promotes living off such things. Indeed his is a bounty of life, its just plague and virus and fungus and rotting. He's the Green God of microbial life.
Just taken into the extreme.

I often think the Hound of Nurgle is the best representation - a happy creature that simply adores its state in life. It's a happy dog full of disease and rot, its body decaying and regenerating all the time as life spills from it. And it just wants to run across the fields (of war) and hug and lick and play "pass the virus" with its new found friends. It's not its fault that they die so easily; that they have to give their lives for the plague and the rot. That they've not embraced Papa-Nurgles blessing to be able to survive such a life.

Indeed one might say that Nurgle is the most caring, for his followers are shown to regenerate and survive infestations that would lay a normal living creature out dead; or at least so riddled with pain as to be unable to think or function

Nurgle highlights the bias in most "green is good" depictions and reminds me a bit of the film Epic
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epic_(2013_film)
In that you've got "Green/Good" fairies fighting "Dark evil" ones. The green side represents life as we like, nice trees and flowers and such; the evil side is decay and rot. The things that pick over the dead. Yet in an actual natural system neither extreme is desirable - rot and decay is needed to sustain life. Old trees die and give way to new growth; their bodies being the food source and habitat of countless species. They are a fountain of life just of a different sort.

Nurgle is that; he's the extreme corrupted take on it because he's from Chaos, but Nurgle is indeed a part of it at the same time.

My fav bit of Nurgle Fluff is the origin of Plague Drones. Once Beasts of Nurgle that have turned bitter and angry at all their 'playmates' either dying or trying to kill them that they cocoon themselves until they emerge as a buzzing beast of pure spite.
