BRB + the codex for whichever faction(s) I'm running.
Other codexes/books as they apply/interest.

So right now for 9th I have:
BRB
Codex: Necron - playing
Codex:SM + SW - playing
Codex: SoB - playing
Codex: Drukari - building
Codex: Admech - general interest
Codex: Thousand Sons - general interest
Book of Rust v1 - campaign use??
The current CA (a near complete waste IMO)

future books will almost certainly include the codexes for Guard & maybe Orks.
I always have the current Guard Book & one of these days (decades) ill put something orky on the table.

1 if you subtract 1 for never buying the BRB. I usually get my main rulebook and whatever chapter approved ends up having the most relevant changes to missions. (although the fact that most recent one isn't spiral bound DESPITE THAT BEING A MUCH MORE FUNCTIONAL BINDING FOR THAT BOOK might end this as well.)

If you're buying campaign books for JUST the rules and GHBs for JUST the points, that's your fault.

You mean you intend to continue playing 9th edition once 10th edition is released?

Nope I have just get use to the rule level quality of Infinity and other games (online free updated rules and army builder) and find the clumpsy and bizarre (non analogical, non digital) state of 40k publications to not be worth a penny.

I don't usually buy any books, only big boxes. So I guess only the rulebooks come in the boxes, so zero?

I would buy digital versions of the books if GW happened to sell them, but now I just buy my main dex second hand and make a PDF out of it. Im mostly in this for the minis, they already get their money off me from plastic & resin

This might come as a shock to you, but there are still those of us who play Rogue Trader even now...

Not at all - I used to play Rogue Trader and I still think it's an excellent game. I'm genuinely interested. I don't think I'd be able to play a previous edition as everyone around here always plays the latest edition. I think I'd be a lot more comfortable with buying more content if I thought I could continue playing the current edition.

I used to buy all of them, I have every book going back to and including 5th edition, but then GW got into this bs rapid edition cycling.

When 8th edition was heralded as the edition to 'stand the test of time' so to speak and then only lasted 3 years... That was it for me.

For 9th I have purchased one codex for the faction I chose to play this edition and going forward I will buy only one codex.

I will not and I refuse to buy bs DLC campaign books. I play what I like to call Codex 40K. You use your codex, nothing more, that's it. Don't like it? Move along.

I was originally gonna try to buy all the codices this edition to have some background fluff on hand for every army, but since GW basicly decided to cut down on that this edition I'm only buying the codices I need.

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

Yep. I like this edition; I'm certainly not planning on rebooting my Crusades. It's bad enough waiting for the dexes to get them moving; another round of waiting for them to update new Crusade while they rerelease it all over again? Nope.

The only books have ruleswise came with the starter boxes for 8th & 9th. I bought the Salamanders supplement so I could read & get more insight into the 18ths organizational structure.

The number of armies I own has been growing over the years, so I always bought the BRB + Codexes. Around 6th, I went from two armies to about 12 (over a period of years), bought a full set of 6th/7th codexes.

When 8th came out, bought the indexes and used just those for some time. Eventually bought the Tau codex and then caved and got all the codexes for my armies.

Haven't bought anything for 9th, and do not intend to. After psychic awakening started to drop, I stopped playing GW's game and started working on my own (which I had started working on in late 6th).

It never ends well

I have 5 armies, so I need to get their codecies, and the BRB, and CAs, and invariably they're going to have splatbooks, so more than 10 of them.

I hate it. It wouldn't be so bad if I just needed the codecies, but campaign books are the worst because it feels like an exceptional waste of money.

I've been playing 5th with my friend group lately. IMO it's a lot better than 9th, but I'm also overall very unhappy with 9th.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades!

Thinking back to my Rogue Trader days, I had the Compendium, Compilation and the two Realm of Chaos books (Slaves to Darkness and The Lost and the Damned).

So exactly the same number of books...

aside from a BRB I only buy a codex for each army I play/own. so 3+the BA supplement this edition. It would have been only two books prior to this edition, Orks and IG.

~1/edition overall. I've picked up some older 'dexes after the fact, but between 5e and now I've only picked up the IG codex (if applicable). I also grabbed the relevant Index and the Forgeworld book in 8th, but apart from that I don't feel any particular need to purchase other books (and I'm not sure I'm going to buy the 9e dex when that drops, either).

I deem it necessary to point out that the BRB is traditionally the Big Red Book, aka the WHFB (6th edition) core rule book while the 40k rule book is the BBB or the BGB (black or grey, respectively).

As for the question, I used to buy almost all back in 3rd edition but nowadays I l buy maybe three?

I don’t pay anything for the rules and I have them for each of my armies. The internet is a winderful thing and I spend more than enough on minis. I should need to pay for the rules to use them - especially when those runes are almost always changed 2 weeks later making that book out of date already.
