I have a model whose hair I intend to paint dark blond in the non too distant future. Since I don't often paint hair and I already used the model to try new and exciting things I figured I might use the opportunity to improve my hair, or try new things, or possibly both.

Anyone got any good ways of painting blond hair they want to share? Pictures appreciated.

Im using zandri dust, sepia wash, ushabti bone trying to get some lines in to somewhat mimic hair and pallid wych flesh highlight.

For my Legolas I used the following.

0. Prime Black
1. Bascoat - 70:30 Yriel Yellow:Rakarth Flesh x 2/3 very thin coats.
2. Wash - Watered down Skeleton Horde wash
3. Layer - 50:50 Sun Yellow:Rakarth Flesh
4. Wash - Watered down Skeleton Horde wash
5. Highlights - 50:50 Sun Yellow:Rakarth Flesh
6. Fine Highlights - 50:50 Mojave White:Sun Yellow



Note; Sun Yellow is Vallejo and Mojave White is Scale 75. The rest are all Citadel.

I dislike when hair is highlighted by the strand and not painted as one entity. Highlights should go towards your light sources like everything else.

Golden yellow. I use Kimera for this but any golden yellow will work. Even kiwi brown is fine

Lights reflecting off the hair go to a cold yellow, blended with the first color for an even transition. Final highlights in a sandy white color.

I've been moving towards that with hair since I generally prefer area highlights over edge highlights. Tricky one to figure out, though.

I sometimes paint blondes with Averland Sunset, Reikland Flesh Wash, and then highlight with Yriel Yellow. It gives me results very much like what you've shown here.

Thanks. Yeah, Reikland Flesh Wash is a lovely paint with lots of applications.

Not sure how I feel about using a pure yellow like Yriel Yellow for hair, though. I always get paranoid about hair not looking natural enough if the color that's used isn't in part brown.
