Anybody else ever get like this? Pre-cursor; big whiny rant ahead
I'm a long time Eldar player. Been in and out of the hobby a couple of times but have always had a soft spot for the space elves.
I've trawled eBay for metal sculpts over the years and made the best of fine cast. I've lived with 20+ year old sculpts for quite some time - and never had an issue with that fact.
I have quite liked being one of the only Eldar players I know because frankly, there are other armies out there than have been updated many times since. Eldar have been left behind.
AND THEN... GW announce a nice new spangly Eldar set and suddenly every man and his dog plans to collect them.
There should be a tax that if you want to start playing Eldar you have to fully paint and play with the old sculpts first
In all seriousness now... I guess what I don't want, more than anything, is to be thought of as a meta chaser because I have the 'in' army.
Hate the idea of people assuming I only play my beloved Craftworld minis because they're new or top tier (assuming they will be).
I've played them at their worst and hopefully look forward to also playing them at their best, but I have to be honest, if Craftworld players start popping up everywhere, I won't want to be among them. I'll end up packing them away until the hype wears off.
What kind of person does that make me? I know it's super salty of me, and I don't want to feel like that... I know i'm being daft! But If i'm being honest, I have to admit, it will bug me a bit.
Here's hoping that everybody gets too persuaded by the new T'au Rail Gun instead...

I'm a Tyranid fan, so my troop models are, I believe, 20 years old this year (and in a less than ideal scale to other troopers), although the Guardians are even older if I remember right.
Having said that, when your faction gets a big update, there'll always be some flavour of the month type stuff going down, and I'm glad that even if my preferred faction has awful, outdated basic infantry and annoyingly same-y large figures, at least it isn't in the limbo Eldar Aspects are. I feel for you, bro.

But you can feel smug in having all the vintage sculpts, many of which won't balance on the meta-wagon (metal jetbikes and Wraith I'm looking at you...)
Heck if I start playing again I'll be using my epic Wave Serpents as that shield wotsot platform

I've played Eldar since I re-started with 40k at 5th edition. They have been all over the meta scale during that time, and I don't spam the overpowered units that edition, like the OP lists.
So, I absolutely see where he's coming from.
But, I expect any non-SM armies get similar issues when the new codex drops. It has been a long time coming for CWE though, and they seem to have been holding back for this one.

Funny thing is, as of a month ago I was all for it. Loved the idea of people playing Eldar. But now it's different. Eldar are about to become the next popular thing, and I just don't want to be bundled into that group of people. That's all.

I kind of get where you're coming from. I started slowly collecting Dark Eldar in 7th edition, then they got their 8th edition codex and a massive power boost and corresponding jump in popularity, and I was briefly a little concerned it was going to look like I was jumping on the bandwagon...

Don't worry, your metal wraithlords, janky posed aspects and guardians with "my legs don't fit quite right" ass cracks will always mark you out as someone who isn't just chasing the meta. Anyone who doesn't see that is likely an even saltier person!

I vastly prefer 2nd ed Aspect sculpts over 3rd ed ones, never found a motivation to buy 4th ed sculpts and I find new Banshees to be inferior to both 4th and 2nd ed ones. I also play with my 2nd ed metal guardians (with a few monopose plastics mixed in) and all of those minis are based on original „Goblin Green with flock” bases, so I’m fairly certain no one will mistake me for a „flavor of the month” player jumping on the bandwagon
My advice? Just keep playing the minis you hold dearest and not the most powerful/broken ones from the incoming codex and you won’t be treated as „those guys” who’s idea of a Pale Courts Craftworld was 50/50 mix of scatbikes and Warp Spiders.

It happens. And I get where you're coming from. I've been playing eldar as my primary army for over 15 years now, and people tend to react in two ways: either you're a meta-chasing power gamer when eldar happen to be good, or you're a sad loser for playing eldar when they're bad. Can't win. I've learned to not care though. I love playing the army, and always have more fun playing 40k when I play eldar than any other army. So I'll keep playing eldar in good times and in bad times!
I also don't expect eldar to stick as a fotm army, unless they are truly broken like in 7th. Fundamtenally, a fragile and elite army doesn't work well for a lot of people. Most prefer more durable armies (either through just tanky units or through hordes), as that's somehwat easier to play, and not as mentally draining during tournaments.
Eldar have historically always been a fairly popular army though, so it's not too weird to see multiple eldar armies at events or in a shop.

This, and also they're the biggest bandwagon faction in the game. People glomming onto elder because they're the power faction goes all the way back to 2nd edition!
There are going to be some new people who stick around for the exploits, but more who buy a bunch and then abandon it because at the end of the day they're still a t3 infantry army in 9th edition.
------
In short, it won't matter if the OP liked it before it was popular. That's basically impossible - just a short term memory view.

Oh believe me, at current prices (even with discounts) those hopping on the bandwagon are paying the tax....
As for worrying about being called a meta-chaser & packing your army away in response?
That's stupid.
Those who you play with IRL already know you play Eldar.
Randos you don't know? Their opinions don't matter.
Besides, your collection of painted vintage metal/finecast will differentiate you from the new generation & their hordes of unpainted new-hottness plastics.

1. When you're showing up tot the table with an army of ancient and outdated sculpts, nobody can accuse you of being a meta chaser since most of the army is being redone.
2. The tax for newbies starting eldar is that they are going to pay significantly more for their new minis than you did for your old ones.

The only thing right now that 99% of Eldar players are unhappy about is the lack of release date Really, this is the most annoying thing with the Rountree's GW - having to wait an unspecified amount of time between the rumour/sneak peek/preview and the preorder. This was actually done better in the past, when models just showed up in WD and on the shelves pretty much at the same time. We already know there is an Avatar remake, we already know there is Maugan, we saw new Guardians, Rangers on foot and on bikes, the new Autarch and we want to buy them right this instant

I suppose it makes you a 40K hipster? Do you also hate it when a band that you "have been a fan of since the beginning" becomes popular?
As an aside at at the risk of summoning someone to the thread, Eldar have been quite strong for most of their existence in 40K. As recently as mid-8th Edition they were quite dominant. Model wise, though, I understand that Eldar players have been neglected. Now we will see if they will put their money on the table.
Enjoy the new sculpts and enjoy new people playing Eldar.

I got tired of my group chasing the meta and not being able to have good games that were fun without having to chase the meta with them, which is very expensive... so I sold out of my 40k stuff some time ago.
I just read the forums now watching things continue as they have always with the glimmer of tiny tiny hope that one day it wont be about chasing the meta anymore and that they sit down and actually make it so 2000 points is in the same ball park as my opponent's 2000 points so I don't need to buy new armies every six months to a year.

News flash: Eldar have been top tier in almost every edition of the game.
YOU ARE THAT GUY. You always were that guy. Those Tau players everyone hated in 6th? You're them, only WORSE. Everyone hates you, they have hated you forever, and will hate you until the sun dies out, because you are an Eldar player, your army is unfair and an enemy to balance and fun. Even worse, your 20+ year old models look better than most modern sculpts and the modern Eldar sculpts will build on that genius and make your army look even better than ever. You and people like you complain about having to use ancient gorgeous metal models with awesome statlines that make other players weep with jealousy. You have no idea what it is to be trash tier and lose every game because the game designers don't give a toss about your faction, because there's always somebody at GW who is squee-ing over the Eldar range. And who can blame them, the range is gorgeous.
The sole complaint that you could make is that way, way back in the day that the metal Eldar War Walker was an affront to sanity because it could not be built without employing pacts with dark gods to get the damn thing to go together or stay together even with pins and the best adhesives money could buy. But GW fixed that, made beautiful plastic war walkers and even sold the things in boxes of three, because only Eldar players get nice things.
You're BITTER? Buddy, you don't know bitter. You don't even have taste buds capable of tasting bitter. Bitter is a fantasy you cannot even conceive of, you have lived a life of sunshine and roses and puppies. You are the chosen son, the favored child, the glorious golden boy and you don't even know it. Those people you're worried about? DON'T. They will buy the new Eldar, and then realize that their painting skills are not good enough for such glorious models and they were only making excuses for not buying metal/finecast models to cover their inherent insecurity over painting such beauty. You will buy their stuff for cheap a year or two later after they give up and post them on eBay, where your your decade of eBay experience awaits them. You will win again because that's all you've ever done, is win.
So shed your perfect glorious tears somewhere else, nobody wants to hear it. You're not a meta chaser, the META CHASES YOU.

Yes, because T3 infantry have been trash in 9th if you ignore Drukhari and AdMech breaking the game and Harlequins being good the entire edition.
Contrarian. Just play your army, good or not, popular or not. You will be able to tune down your list if the army turns out to be OP, the real gameplan is hoping for thematic and fun mechanics since pts change every 6 months anyway and new codexes will sometimes just be super OP turning your previously OP faction in a joke.
