Every army goes through this sooner or later. The longer you play the more you get used to it. When I started in 5th, IG had the leafblower list, named because it felt like taking a leafblower to the table and blowing the opponents models away. Then we slowly got worse through 6th and 7th, at best being allies to other armies that could abuse keywords to buff our stuff. Then 8th dropped and we were great again, only to slowly drop through nerfs till we get to 9th, where we fell off a cliff because 9th edition actively punishes you for making a guard army.

Its just how it goes. Look at tau for example, absolutely terrible till their codex in 9th dropped. Same for GSC, same for admech, you get the idea. Im not sure what theyll do to make IG function in 9th but we're a very popular army, its not like they actively want us to fail. That level of malice is reserved for chaos marine players, as shown by them waiting two years for a second wound loyalists got day 1 of 9th edition.

It just feels bad being spoiler in even narrative games. Playing a crusade now with people who either have their codexes or are soon to get theirs, and I've only won one of seven games, even after following the advice of other Guard players online.

Well, I do enjoy collecting and painting them, so I guess I'll do that in the meantime. Just keeping in my foxhole for now.

Boi, if that vexes you, you can always take a look at FW legends armies.

It's a problem of gw releasing rules peacemeal instead of at once. but don't fret sm2.0 is on the Way.

If I had money, time, and storage, I absolutely would get those. R&H and Elysians especially. I am nothing if not a glutton for great looking unusable models.

Unusable is debatable, they are usable, afterall.... just, well their hay day is long gone.

Alas, the wheels and waves turn and maybee just maybee you get an designer that actually knows the faction and what it should be like.
even CSM get those spikes

A Mostly Renegades and Heretics blog.
GW:"Space marines got too many options to balance, therefore we decided to legends HH units."
Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?"
Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"
Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH.

Looking at guard FW makes me sad because FW or GW almost seems to be purposefully making those models crap for guard.

To many unpainted models to count.

They are an army for a game that doesn't exist anymore for them.

Hello, looking up LVO, it looks like the #1 Guard player atm in the ITC is like #119 or something altogether. Are best can't even hit top 100.

people often say guard were strong in 8th, but pure guard not so much, people were just allying in some basic guard infantry squads with a commander to give them cheap command points to spend on their space-marines

Guard were strong early in 8th, but mostly as a very counter-meta choice with Conscript/Commissar spam. Running a couple hundred fearless bodies was more than most lists could deal with. Even though they didn't really do much damage, they could tie up units and hold objectives nearly indefinitely. As soon as both Conscripts and Commissars were nerfed (several times, and in several ways), Guard were significantly reduced in power and never really could compete again outside of being taken as cheap CP generators.

You then let your big giant mech or whatever from Soup do whatever to kill everything off.

Even if GW brought this back I doubt it'd change much now. One of our most successful stratergies still is infantry spam, there's many competitive players who run 18 infantry squads across 3 battalions for example.

With even more bodies, our biggest enemy will be the clock in a tournament. Pure infantry already requires a ton of practice and most of the time you don't even fire their guns to save time.

The IAC was a rushed cashgrab. Just look at the Valdor Tank Hunter it was moved to Heavy Support, but its still a Titanic model and has Steel Behemoth. The entire reason they did that is because the Malcador, the vehicle its based on, is also now a Heavy Support choice but it correctly had its stats and profile changed.

Just don't run a Lost and the Damned list. I don't much care for the competition when it comes to trying to acquire cultists armed with lasguns or autoguns.

I didn't say anything about running Lost and the Damned. I'm talking about regular Guard.
