Rocky spires and such are pretty well covered by battlefield in a box or the average to large pet store.

I think the terrain will end up being more Ash Wastes outpost/stronghold/settlement-y. A long-abandoned water or fuel station. Remnants of a shanty town. That sort of thing.

I also wonder if the format of the terrain will be more like this (good! ) or more like this (very bad! ).

I'm fully prepared for them to reveal one thing that they'll manage to release in good order over the next month or so, and teasers for a bunch of things that won't see the light of day for another 6 months due to shipping and printing delays.

If Knights come out before CSM I'm pretty sure a chunk of this forum is going to birth live kittens.

All I'm going to expect out of the preview is for a portion of the community to be mad. Other than that I have no expectations.

Could Chaos Marines be bundled together with Chaos Daemons, sharing the same codex? And Imperial Knights with Chaos Knights?

Both would be a dream, but... I doubt it.

Only reason I'm not 100% certain is Codex Craftworlds became 'the Random Book of Elves, except dark. (And Exodites, because people want those so we just won't)'

No not daemons but according to some older rumors we will get the canibalised Lost and the damned in it.

Daemons are way further out. You guys will just have to trust me on this one, but I know for a fact you have a LONG wait for the new Daemon stuff. Like, well after Christmas, without being too specific.

Five books (there just aren't many left- Knights, Knights, Spiky Marines, Guard, Demons) over 8+ months? That'd be a terrible decision on GW's part.

That's not wrong, but at this point I feel like they want to be done with this as much as we do.
With Imp Knights suddenly jumping into the queue established by the rumors that have borne out, They could have 3 of those 5 out by the end of April. (Knights are inherently small releases, ironically). Dragging their feet on Guard and Daemons just feels... pointless and bad for GW.

Which leaves one book left from 8th. I could believe a nostalgic return to Codex: Chaos that combines Daemons and LatD with a bunch of callbacks to weird 90's things

Yeah, they may want to , but the current global logistics/shipping issues might make that difficult for them. I don't think everything is going "according to plan", right now.

That doesn't seem unrealistic to me given the pace of releases lately. Tyranids and all Knights in April, Chaos Marines as a larger model update in May, Horus Heresy in July and possibly into August. What about those rumors of a new Marine codex? Do we still expect that? That would easily fill September. Then put Guard in November with a larger model update as well. Reserve June and October for something substantial for AoS and December for Christmas boxes. Specialist Games stuff and random DLCs go in between and that's the year accounted for, without even worrying about what happens to World Eaters or a potential Squat release.

Is the expectation that squats are going to get a separate codex rather than just appearing in the guard codex in a capacity similar to the tempestus (where they get their own selectable keyword)? Looking at the fluff on the 40k wiki, that seems completely doable to me, but I'm sure there are folks here with far better insight into how GW might handle this than I.

To the best of my knowledge right now we have "Squats are happening" from a very reliable leaker. Which is no guarantee of it happening, mind. It's still a rumor. We don't know if that means Squats for 40k or Kill Team or both.

I don't think we have any way of answering how GW would handle such a release with any accuracy. Genestealers, when they came back, were treated as a fully autonomous faction rather than an addition to Tyranids. The same leaker said we'd get mortal Chaos followers and it looks like they will be an addition to Chaos Marine codex even though the Lost and the Damned have been standalone before. GW has gone back and forth on splitting off and consolidating factions like Harlequins. And at the same time Marines and Harlequins experience consolidation, World Eaters follow the example of Thousand Sons and Death Guard and are spun off into their own codex. All of which is to say, there is no pattern we could reasonably rely on to predict GW's choice (if Squats do come back).

Necromunda, Warhammer Underworlds and Warhammer 40k previews are not hard to guess. If Ash Wastes ends up being a full boxed set reveal, I don't think we are going to see Horus Heresy box yet (although zero information teaser trailer is plausible). Yeti would hint at BloodBowl Norse release but it might as well be another team instead. Age of Sigmar has potential for a "did not see that coming" preview but I would be happy with Jabberslythe and/or Dragon Ogre Shaggoth reveal.

Worst case - Nothing. They generally only show one thing for each game system, and this is the next thing. They're basically showing us something that we already know about, just in more detail. I can't imagine them showing less.

AoS - Rats/Tree Elf or Beastmen/Tree Elf battle box. Announcing their new books.
Worst case - A preview of one mini from this set and a dumb trailer. "We can't wait to show you the rest of the box later in the year!"

Blood Bowl - Norse team. Perhaps expansion box teams for Dungeon Bowl (boxes with no new models, but combos of sprues for different teams).
Worst case - The FW thing that leaked a while back, and that's it.

Horus Heresy - The new Horus Heresy edition/boxed set.
Worst case - That Black Legion mini that leaked a while back, and that's it.

There’s still plenty of legions missing Praetor models they can show instead of anything to do with the box

Looks like they're focused on clearing the 40k content backlog in time for 10th edition next year, and most other things have to wait.

It also wouldn't surprise me if many 40k factions are outselling AOS currently after last year's starter box.
