This is like a cg trailer as long or longer than the new HH got. Faction logo. This would be an elaborate faction announcement, it would be insane as ”just a joke”.

So probably just a joke.

How is this "cruel"? Nobody is losing anything. Oh, yes, I also lost my precious Squats back in the 90s too, but I've lived a fair bit of life since then, so the wound isn't exactly what you might call... "fresh".

Judging from some of the responses to this video I'm half expecting to read a headline sometime next week about a murderous rampage that was carried out by somebody who had reacted poorly to an animated video about a science fiction dwarf that didn't exist.

Some of us care about stuff like this. How would SoB players have reacted to this? How would Bretonnian Players react to something like this? Things mean things to some people, and no one gets to be the judge on what matters to another human being. It is cruel to torment people with promises of things they really want, regardless of plastic dwarven figures for a game, or a cure for a rare type of cancer.

I'll bite.

Why is a full codex of Squats too much to ask for?

Was Genestealer Cult too much to ask for? How about Sisters of Battle? Inquisition? Exodite Eldar?

All but one of those have been full armies people could play in the past. (I'm not experienced enough to know if Exodites were a thing outside text, someone can enlighten me on that if they wish.) Is it so silly to see that they can be again, especially when two of those are now fully flushed out in the game with loads of models and rules?

A kill team would make an excellent beginning though. Help gauge interest and do some engineering practice on modelling squat aesthetics on a sprue.

I feel thats what the SOB plastics were before their individual releases. Lots of stuff thrown together on singular sprues bu not quite legal for most things (but that SOB kit was actually pretty good for KT 18 teams, for the most part)

Exodites had a unit option and maybe a character back in 2nd edition, but they were definitely limited.

I think a Codex at this point in time is too much to ask for. They usually will test the waters for non-Imperial armies with one unit first. Like how Harlequins were an Eldar unit when they got new metal models. Then they made the plastics, saw the demand, and then semi-fleshed out the line for a Codex.

Also, weren't the plastic GSC hybrids just in that Deathwatch game before getting an actual Codex? Or was that roughly the same time? I remember getting the Deathwatch guys before getting the Acolyte & Neophyte boxes. But since I was fleshing out my years-old GSC counts-as IG army at the time, I didn't get the Codex.

This is just my theory. I think if they go a KT or similae route and see a demand, a Codex will come.

Well if its a bad joke - someone will have to go on stage and slap the feth out of them.

I look forward to seeing what they do - they have brought back Squats for Necromunda and this seems a obvious continuation of this.

To be honest I would rather new (or revived races and factions) than crowbaring in new units to them - looking at rubbish like the Centurions, Dreadknights, Sisters Paragons, Tau Stormsurge are just not....good (IMO)

Bit of both. Exodite squads came from your Troops, but the squad leader came from Characters. And you couldn’t take the Character without the squad.

Hey I get that, it makes a lot of sense. I just feel like I've seen a lot of folks dismissing Squats because they feel they're too silly or some other such nonsense, when we're talking about a fiction universe with space orks, space elves and 10 foot tall human warriors.

yeah I wasn't sure about that one, I'm guessing that was a 90s thing? I'd not ever heard of Exodites until like 2020. I was really confused about the new animation called the Exodite too, was expecting Eldar, got Tau.

Unfortunately, Jervis and company did Squats a bad turn when they squatted them. They gave an official reason why: they thought the lore was dumb, and couldn't think of anything more interesting at the time. So they discontinued them. It wasn't sales, just a lack of ideas internally. And, over time, that lack of inspiration has translated into the idea that GW was justified in getting rid of them and shouldn't ever bring them back. And instead should do <insert random idea here>.

I mean, feeling like you can't make a product good is a much better reason to discontinue it than most...

Exodites were the original lore reason for knights in Epic. The Eldar knights were Exodite war machines based on the machines they used to herd their dinosaurs, and fight off invaders. Human colonists ended up settling nearby, and copied the basic idea. AFAIK, the knights were the only Exodites to appear in Epic.

There were completed Epic Eldar Exodites riding dinosaurs ready for release but they were never released. You can still search and find pre-release pictures of them.

So anyway...I see the Squat trailer. Is GW not going to do any April Fools release then?

I think it's real, but there will be no mention anywhere of Squats. This might be the Crew of the Mjolner, and they may be Dwardin of the Core Leagues, but Squats? Maybe a derogatory terms in the small fluff bit in the IG book.

I would not object to a rebranding in name. AOS Kharadron Overlords already shows how the old Dwarf/Squat aesthetic might be done.

I'm all in for Mjolner's Shipbreakers, with a bunch of retcons that more or less sticks to the basics we know (including the fight against Tyranids) and has the survivors of the leagues now nomadic spacers rather than underground miners. Aliens powerlifters meets Alien Resurrections oddball crew for the Kill Team. Living ancestor in his old exoarmour perhaps.

Just as long as we still get the Demiurg for T'au...

The only thing keeping me thinking this is definitely an April Fool's Joke is the reference to "don't even check your calendar." Other than that, a rather expensive looking April Fools Joke.

And I can totally see them come back in a Kill Team format...at least for GW to judge interest.

Urusei Yatsura, Cerebus the Aardvark, Machiavelli, Plato and Happy Days. So, how was your childhood?

I wouldn't mind if they were even rebranded as Demiurg. They were only mercenaries with the Tau, so they could still be their own independent faction if expanded.
There was a hint in one of the recent supplements about their return despite supposedly thought extinct.

I could see the following working to spread them round the galaxy in order to have battles:
Nomadic mercenary survivors living off their stronghold spaceships bearing a grudge against the Imperium for abandoning them in their hour of need when their homeworlds were attacked by the Tyranids. A few mining enclaves mostly on newly settled hidden inhospitable worlds. The mercenaries fighting other races to get resources directly or as mercenary payment to funnel back to their worlds, which are turned into fortresses.

I'm thinking it's meant to be a joke.

BUT, I can see GW following the hype and excitement it creates to see the popularity of squats, and using them as a starter force for 10th edition.

Currently most played: Silent Death, Mars Code Aurora, Battletech, Warcrow and Infinity.

There is a Squat bounty hunter in game or am I mistaken? Anyway, that gang would be a very cool addition.

There's two of them so far - ammo jack and the hired gun. Squat Biker Gang in the wastes please!

Two models, and the Venator (Bounty Hunter) list just happens to let you take an entire crew of people who just happen to have Move 3, Strength 3, Toughness 4, lower initiative, and good Intelligence rolls.

Then you hop over to Hardcore Minis and buy all the incredibly cool Space Dwarf models you want!

I've already ran a Necromunda Squat Brotherhood as Venators, and despite my pokey movement, a gang with bolters on the basic gangers can be nasty.

Even if it is total bollocks, it got a lot of people talking and more importantly the animation is rad as hell. I love the look of the captain impaled on his sword and the lighting. Extremely cool.

You know someone further up the thread said maybe the squat bit was just tacked onto some other animation. And it sort of did look a bit like that. Hopefully the first bit of animation is for something cool.

I guess we have to wait until later today to find out if it was real..

Looks like a faction icon like the other 40k factions have. If it was a joke there would have been more of a nod and wink with the artwork- they would have used old designs. New squat design and a modern faction icon to sit with the rest of the 40k range, backed up by their mention in the 100% rumour list from last year. They are coming, probably as a killteam first.
I reckon we will see more next week.

the tyranids eating them was just an offhand comment, this is the quote:
"Would you believe they were all eaten by the Tyranid invasion? Or, due to the Squats biker life style, everyone of them was arrested for disturbing the peace and sacrificed to the Emperor. Where do you think they get all of those souls anyway? All kidding aside, it doesn't seem likely the Squats will ever again see the light of day. When they were out they never seemed very popular, showed up at our stores, or tournaments, and didn't sell on top of all that. Their look was really outdated compared to the hundreds of other great Warhammer 40,000 models. Don't send us hate mail, it's just the cold hard facts of the 41st Millennium."
- unnamed GW employee

Unless it has been written into the canon further?
