Wasn’t there a line in one of the BL books about the Ultras being so large because they had been swelled with the numbers of one of the disbanded legions? I love how the authors play about with it with the odd line here and there, without ever revealing too much.

That's why no one ever found the lost legions, they were the Ultra Marines (vice the Ultramarines) and the Angels of Blood (vice the Blood Angels).
Everyone just assumed they were part of the more famous legions and they got tired of correcting everyone.

yes although ADB has later on said that it was intended to just be gak talking and wasn't actually intended to be the truth. and given we know why the Ultramarines got so large he didn't expect people to seize on the comment as anything more then gak talking.
That said gak talking like that works best when there's SOME form of truth around it.. so with that in mind there has to be some sort of basis.
1: The legions died roughly at the same time the Ultramarines numbers swelled, this was pure coincidance.
2: Legionaries where absorbed by several Legions of which the Ultramarines where one and the word bearers where not. (this doesn't mean they got many, it coulda even just been a squad.)
3: Gulliman received EQUIPMENT that had been slated for those legions
