Two observations from the preorder reveals:
1) On the closeup pict of the drone thing, its base has a brown edge like HH 2.0 stuff. The base is repainted in the pict with all the contents of the box, hinting that perhaps the drone was already supposed to be out with the first mechanicum wave during HH 2.0 (?)
2) The latest journal will also be available as epub, which means GW finally sorted out their digital publications regulation SNAFUs. Hopefully, this means the game systems which used to get epubs before the new regulations canned em will resume getting them. That latest big Liber for LI would be most welcome..

There almost certainly was some rejigging going on. It seems like the posterboys for 3.0 was meant to be IW/Salamanders as a switch from 2.0 with SoH/IF, but that switch ended up happening before the actual launch of Saturnine, with for example the Command Squad box being painted IW in their previews and coming with IW/Salamanders decals despite being a 2.0 kit.

Why are they dressed in rags if they're the faction leader's personal troops?
Fine sculpts otherwise, but the grasshopper legs make them look a lot more 40k than 30k.
Vultarax in plastic is, of course, fantastic.

Yeah, I'd say these legs are definitely some kind of "retro-engineering" we've seen in HH several times, as with the Arquitor and the Vultarax. It's probably also to give you a definite "Nah uh, you can't use our 40K Skitarii as Skitarii in HH, these are totally different you see, these robed bionic rifle guys are at least 1 cm taller than those other robed bionic rifle guys!"

"Personal troops" should be in big quotation marks. The galaxy was full of Skitarii. It was more a political affiliation than any notion of them being his personal bodyguard or anything of the sort.
(Many of them remained loyalist too, such as one of the POV characters of Echoes of Eternity).

I agree that they look more as though they belong in WH40k. These are probably the first HH miniatures that I really don't like, and won't be buying.
I'll definitely get some Vultarax(es), however.

I would argue that's maybe sort of the point.
The Adeptus Mechanicus is a sterilised version of the Mechanicum of the Crusade and Heresy.
The machines and soldiers of the Mechanicum should be more inhuman than their "modern" counterparts since there weren't nearly as many restrictions on technology.
Creepy leg Skitarii, squid-bot Servo Automata, the Vulturax, all good stuff for a race that hasn't been squishy for hundreds if not thousands of years.
I like that they're not just carbon copies of the 40k models, which AFAIK still exist as Titan Guard.

Whilst I’m split on the specific aesthetic of these new guys? I otherwise agree wholeheartedly with Gert.
Consider what nobody within the nascent Imperium had a problem with in terms of Mechanicum Toys.
Sure, AI was ruled out as naughty bad. But….just grabbing a bunch of random peons and shoving a mind control helmet on them (which left them fully conscious but unable to control their own body) to create swathes of cannon fodder? Not. A. Problem.
Feel your Forgeworld is overpopulated? Send out the Vorax. Give them a cumulative kill count, they’ll be back when it’s hit.
Thallaxi? It’s basically the bits that make a Haggis, plus the thinky bits, less some strategic thinky bits, hardwired into an agonising metal body forevermore.
There are horrors pretty much anywhere you look. 40K? Well kinda less so. Skitarii have questionable levels of free will after all, but at least the upgrades are considered a sign of devotion.
So I’m happy with Mechanicum being that little bit nastier looking.
Where I think my eye is not completely sold on the Battle Pilgryms is the chosen ‘Eavy Metal Palette is very close to the Necromunda Ash Waste Nomads. And so they don’t immediately look quite right.
Upside? Should be within the fortnight we see other, community painted, offerings on them. And those I do look forward to seeing.

Regarding the Ally thing, it's probably not a downside, as in 3rd edition it's easier to unlock slots for Allies than for your main faction. The only question is whether you can take a transport vehicle "native" to the Skitarii list or will they have to walk. But from the Vulturax being in the same box, I'm guessing there will be some Mechanicum units that can swap their faction for Skitarii, GW would not give you units you can't run together ( nobody mention the LI starter pls)

New stuff from Valrak -
"Entire" FW Custodes range is moving to plastic, save for the flyers (this doesn't mean it's all getting announced imminently). He doesn't say if this includes SOS. Also some new stuff including female Custodians.
Reiterates that he's heard that Dorn and Guilliman are getting new 30k models, but if they are resin or plastic isn't mentioned here.
"Lots of" Horus Heresy units are coming.
He will do another video about Mark IV in the next week or two.

Thinking about the Skitarii/ Vultarax Box I'm wondering about the pricing. Do we already have a list?
With GW savings it's possible the box costs the same as a later released single Vultarax kit....

110€ box, at the normal rate should be 150-160€ worth of kits
30€ ish clampack character
64€ double sized intantry box (16 skitarii)
60 ish left for Vultarax

That has to be just Mars. Two million in the whole galaxy would make them a totally irrelevant force in the war. At that point they'd be outnumbered by the Space Marines, and that's not a good place to be considering the complaints GW already gets about Marine numbers.

Interesting that these ancient Skitarii are so different. I mean the 40K Skitarii are described as being created in stages, with only the best finally getting the "honour" of passing the Crux Mechanicum and becoming more than 50% metal.
Meanwhile, these guys seem to be baby Thallaxii with bits of the Imperial Knight throne system built in, going from zero to robocop in one easy (painful) step....
I hope we get an explanation of what happened to this lot after the Scouring. I mean, clearly someone decided they were too good/powerful/easy to make for them to be left in the hands of the newly minted Adeptus Mechanicus and replaced them with a pattern based more on the Titan Guard, but y'know, in detail.
Also, Volkite longrifles seem like fun.
