WE is one of several books coming later this year.
They've consistently used the same language for time frame that they've used for Votann ('in the coming months').

Guard also seems to be in the current time-frame.

its possible they just release it as a codex in 9th but rumors of 10th being around the corner has been around for a while, they are almost doen with the codexes and sales spikes correspond to new books so I doubt we get long before either 9th 2.0 codexes or a new edition. history points to the latter

Now you've confused me more.
10th being 'around the corner' is literally a full year (summer 2023, with good odds on July again). Nothing in GW's history suggests they stop releases and not sell new army books (or alternate books) for a full year.

And in point of fact, recent GW history points to padding out editions with splat books (psychic abomination, etc).
---

But hypotheticals aside, we know 40k army books are coming, in the coming months (not year). They've explicitly told us so multiple times for multiple books.
10th in 2023 isn't unlikely (its a reasonable expectation at this point). But that doesn't in any way mean that 9th edition books stop.

If you're wondering about "Snake Boi", I'm meaning Fulgrim - Shadow would be Corax.

Eye of Terror

Smart money is on the contents of the boxed sets. If you know what's in them, you know what the first Codexes will be.

Looking at the historical record:

- 3rd - SM vs Tyranids
- 4th - SM vs Drukhari
- 5th - SM vs Orks
- 6th - SM vs Chaos
- 7th - Space Wolves vs Orks
- 8th - SM vs Death Guard
- 9th - SM vs Necrons

Odds favor a Space Marines vs Xenos matchup. The Xenos is probably not one of the following:

- Necrons, because they just did that in 9th.
- Eldar, because they were in a boxed set very recently.
- Orks, because they've been done twice before.
- Tyranids, because they are of uncertain worth as a faction.
- Tau, because there's not enough interest in the faction.

That leaves Genestealer Cults, Drukhari and Squats. My guess is Squats because the models are shinier and newer.

The Dark Horse would be an unannounced Renegade Guard release. Ultramarines versus Reneguard would be epic.

...wasn't the 7th edition starter still Dark Vengeance, just with the updated rulebook, so still DA vs. Chaos (as the 6th ed box should be denoted)?

I think it is more probable to be a Chaos opponent to generic SMs, given that 9th was a Xenos box - either Renegade Guard (or R&H Redux) or World Eaters seem reasonable to me.

I'd have said Marines vs World Eaters before the Angron leak. Now the Marines vs Tyranids ones seem a bit more credible.

The new runmors from whats his name seem to indicate Primaris BA vs All new (necrons refresh style) Nids. Leviathan Wars basically. Teased jump pack Primaris, Primaris Terminators, and Melta Redemptors.

The last of 9th will be Guard are Demons. Either way, they'll get less than 3 months to play before 10th, where Marines will get their new equal appreciation, contractually obliged codex.

GW has made it clear there will be a Marines 2.0 and Leagues of Votann. I think those will be last.

They will be marketed as "having been written with 10th edition in mind", but will still get follow-up Codizes 9 months later.

SM 2.0 has to be this year or not at all, if 10th will be next year. Even for GW two Codex in one year would be a bit much. Thought they had confirmed Votann before the end of the year?

They've made it clear there will be Votann and World Eaters and shown off Guard.
I'd very much like to know where they 'made it clear' about Marines 2.0. (They being specifically GW, officially, not 'somebody on the internet says')

So with daemons officially announced, a lot of theories just hit the bin.

Reliable rumors are suggesting guard after daemons and then Votann and World Eaters.

So quite a few to come yet this year, then some uncertainty in the lead up to 10th.

IIRC the rumors were, 10th is going to launch with nids vs Blood angels.
Marines are getting primaris terminators
Blood angels are getting what i can only describe as the super sanguinor, that is the avatar of Sanguinius.

To many unpainted models to count.

I don't see there being a dedicated Sanguinor mini in a starter kit, it pushes people away from it that aren't dedicated BA players.

A shiny and new Primaris unit(s) painted as BA, with a shiny new Sanguinor being released the week after (with the tag that it goes perfectly with the starter box) I can definitely see happening.

Oh no no ,its not going to be in the starter kit, its just coming with the launch of 10th, the other primaris unit is a new melee assault primaris unit as well.

The Sanguinor Primaris will be shown in all the hype photos, vuideos, and release trailers. It will then be announced that it will NOT be in the starter box, but will be in a Combat Patrol coming later that year. Also, due to the ever impending recession in the US, spiking covid all over Europe and the US, Brexit failing spectacularly, and GW being total tits when it comes to effectively running a company, we will not see the Stand Alone Sanguinorius until 2025ish. At the Earliest.

Winners are Space Marines and Tyranids.
But GW may have other plans.
I'm sure they already made their decision as 10th ed seems already at the fence.

I could see them suddenly switching plans and pushing Votann into 10th, and making them the "astartes" faction. They are already essentially smaller Space Marines.

But they aren't Space Marines and therefore won't replace Marines in the launch/starter sets. The only way a non-Marine army will be in the launch/starter set is if they are the "enemy" faction.

Which pretty much rules out anything imperium, yes i know lore wise imperial on imperial action is quite fluffy but im pretty sure they will always want more diversity in boxed sets.

Even if that diversity is marines v evil marines.
