Hello fellow war criminal. I too am a war criminal.
1 Paladin, 4 Apothecaries and a 10 man support squad. Said support squad has plasma repeaters, but those are currently glued to a sprue ladder for priming.
Really liking this grey resin. Less brittle then the translucent green I used previously and I'm not 100% sure, but I feel like it gives better detail. But that could just be me convincing myself of something that's not actually happening.

Slow week, it's so hot I don't want to commute to my printing workshop But I got these guys done, a random Librarian and the cheeky Vigilator. He's gonna need reprinting as some underside parts came out nasty. 32mm base also turned out to be too small for the tactical rock that should be supporting the shield. I also had a Cataphractii Primus Medicae but apparently somehow he got swept from the table right into a trash bin and taken out. Which means I'll have to rewrite my list for this week's game

It's more an optical illusion, the hood goes all the way to the top of the carapace. Normally there is that gap between the top of the helmet recess and the carapace.
It does look great tho...

Cata heads sit pretty low as it is, in the plastic kit the chin is so far below the neck guard it's not even sculpted

Sure, but the design of the plastic Cataphracti means it does not look as though the head is sunk into its chest (and I replaced the heads so they sit a bit higher). The curve of the chest plate on Librarian design tends to emphasise it. It's otherwise a very nice model - especially the stud detail and the engraved armour. I could nitpick about whether or not a HH-era Librarian would have the full-blown horned skull thing going on, but I don't think that kind of stuff really matters.

Looking to get people's thoughts and opinions on how to proceed with some unit markings for my Dark Angels.
First a small spiel so that you understand where i'm coming from from a lore stand point and where I'm sort of hoping to go with it.
My Dark Angels are an early era Great Crusade expeditionary force from before the Primarchs were found and when the Emperor still lead the expansion into the wider galaxy at the head of the Legions. A time when the Principa Bellicosa was still in it's infancy and the Hosts of the First Legion were still in full use.
So my forces make heavy use of MkII and III armour with nothing of newer make. I'm ensuing more "modern" vehicles such as Sicarans, sabres and Leviathans (or I'll convert up my own and give them suitable cover stories ) in favour of older marks and models more fitting with post-Terran unification era tech. None of the later Caliban influenced headdresses or robes and suchlike. Etc etc, so on and so forth. Old good, new bad.
Probably won't even run the Lion if I'm honest. Who needs him when you've got Farith Redloss, chief perpetrator of warcrimes, master of guns, bringer of rad grenades and executor of 9 fething attacks on the charge. NINE!
*Ahem.*
To the point though, I don't plan on using any of the typical Dark Angels iconography, as they're not officially Dark Angels until the Legion reunites with the Lion. Which means they don't have their winged dagger or any of the Calibanite-era Hexagrammaton/armorial icons.
What they do have in the way of iconography is their...
-Legion Designation. (1 or 'I' seems somewhat interchangeable or could just be GW being inconsistent)
-Angels of Death cognomen. (Hooded Angel of Death as seen on banners and tanks or hooded skull icon)
-Host and Hekatonystika icons. (Similar to the Hexagrammaton icons only different)
-Standard company organisational markings. (tactical arrows, assault cross, etc.)
My problem though is i'm not sure how I want to utilise the various symbols on the average marine. I think i'll keep the company markings as standard as there's no reason to change that up. Issues start to arise when working out the rest though. Seeing as they have no official Legion Icon before the winged dagger, that leaves the left pauldron theoretically blank. However various sources give alternate options for what could take it's place. At at different points during and after the Unification Wars the Legion would have just used the numerical designation as an identifier rather then a symbol as the later Legions started to use. A 1 on the shoulder is an interesting choice, big and bold as it is, but I sort of feel that goes against the overall feel of the early 1st Legion. They weren't really about proclaiming who they were, they were just there to delete you from existence and move on.
Once they were out in the wider galaxy and gained the title of Angels of Death they seem to have adopted the Hooded Reaper as something of a semi-unofficial Legion symbol. However other sources place the reaper/hooded skull as Terran Veteran honour marking. The former I think fits better with their modus operandai while the latter I feel goes against them gaining the moniker of Angels of Death as word spread about them through the galaxy, but then maybe the gained said moniker because they used the reaper as a symbol. I guess it works either way and just depends on how you want to interpret it. The hooded skull I think works much better on the shoulder though, being much more in your face and intimidating. It'd just come down to how sparingly I wanted to use it. Officers and Elites only, or everyone? (Seeing as all my guys are Terrans anyway)
The original Hosts all had distinct brands that helped muddy the waters of standardised rank organisation. There is precedent for them (the Hexagrammaton) being used on a marines pauldrons, but on the right shoulder in place of the company markings. On the left shoulder could be an interesting and somewhat meta callback (call-forward?) to the 40k version of the Death/Ravenwing who both use their own company symbols on the left shoulder in place of the Chapter symbol. The Host icons probably work better as smaller knee piece though as they're not really meant as a Force Identifier, but rather a broader specialisation within the general Legion structure.
The Hekatonystika symbols, being a narrower subset of rank and role within the wider Hosts, wouldn't take prominence so I will keep them confined to knees/vambraces/banners/etc.
Basically (I think) what i'm asking is, what symbols work better for a pre-caliban 1st Legion and where should do you think they should go.

Okay, I’ll bite…
Put the ‘I’ on the left pauldron, because it’s an austere, stark chapter marking that gives little away (also very easy to do). Only elites and leaders get the hooded skull.

Just finished assembling and basing some Sisters to ally with my Militia. I was going to add some more and convert them to get more poses, but they aren’t very conversion-friendly. The models are nice, but they seem a bit fragile - especially the swords. And I really wish GW wouldn’t put joins across fingers, as any gaps are hard to fill and the slightest misalignment is noticeable.
