Any Spawn fans out there?
What's better, the comic or the movie? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spawn_(1997_film)#Differences_from_the_comic
Edit: or the animated series?
Personally never read the comic, but loved the movie.
An underrated classic imho.

The movie definitely did not age well, so I'd say comics from a purely visual perspective and the fact that the movie scrapes the surface of the story for Spawn. It would be interesting if they gave it another try, maybe this time with the Redeemer, but I doubt it would go well with how oversaturated the super hero movie market is right now.

I don't think Spawn works as a movie. Spawn works as a series. The Animated series from around the time of the movie always did a better job IMO.
And yeah... that movie does not age well. Especially the CGI hell with a Malebogia where the budget ran out so his mouth doesn't move.

The comics. And another vote for the animated series.

Thanks for pointing out the series, I've added that to the OP.

It was Lance845 that pointed it out first. That's why I was giving "another vote" to it. Just making sure that credit is given where credit is due.

For its time, the movie was about as decent a comic book adaptation as the market could hope for, and certainly did the job of getting folk familiar with Spawn as a thing.
Animated series was a major, major step up over the movie. But whilst western appreciation for anime type fare was growing, it was nowhere near its popularity today.
Comics? Don’t think I’ve ever read them.
I did have a reasonable collection of those MacFarlane figures though. Those were typically pretty cool.

He is. Honestly him being the clown is the best part of the movie.

I just watched Spawn - 97 again a few months ago and I recalled the first time or two I saw it that I just didn't care for it. Now, years later with all of these super hero movies we've had, I think Spawn is a lot better than I originally thought it was. Was it perfect, no. The FX's are actually not that bad thought given it was made way back when. I like that the glowing flames were used fairly lightly so they do look out of place but they don't look horrible either. The plot was very strait forward and not hugely deep which is fine for a throw away movie, consumable medial, like basically every superhero movie. The comics were probably much better in that regard.
The Violator was the clear winner in this movie. Best character and John Leguizamo stole the show.
I hope there is no reboot or remake.

Heh. I like Jamie Fox, but I'm not sure he's Spawn. I liked Michael Jai White. I mean he's up there in age now too if they're going for old Spawn.

Who ever they get will be caked in make up anyway. And it sounds like it's still quite a ways out.

And a whole universe to boot...
"My pitch to Hollywood is just going to be: 'Here are my 400, 500 characters [from] over 30 years. Here are my new books. I'm going to be doing it for the next 10 years while you're making a Spawn movie, so this number's just going to get bigger. Do you think any of those characters beyond Spawn have any value?'" If the answer is "potentially," he'll take it from there.

Jokes on me I guess.
Honestly doesn't matter.
Jamie Fox is a better actor than Channing Tatum so there's that.

Spawn is an awesome comic
I like the movie.
He's way too old. You'd need the star actor in Creed and Black Panther or a younger actor

MacFarlane lost the rights to Angela. Disney owns her now.

Yeah. McFarlanes whole deal was creator owned xharacters. Neil Gaiman made Angela. He was going to loan her to Marvel until McF got pissy and told him he couldn't because McF has beef with the major comic companies. So Gaiman told him too bad Angelas mine. And he sold her out right to Marvel semi out of spite.
McFarlane would need to get Marvels permission to use her again. Which he won't ask for because of pride.
