How do!

So today’s New 40K Article demonstrates that certain Characters are assigned to a squad during deployment, and will provide buffs to that squad only. And we’ve also seen that at least the Primaris Lieutenant has a set choice of squads to join.

In a certain sense, this makes the preponderance of Primaris Lieutenant models make a bit more sense. But, it’s the Unit Limitations which inspired this thread.

Because a cursory head scratch shows most Character Models (excluding Special Characters) are all foot sloggers, barring Primaris Biker Chaplain, and Farseers/Warlocks on Jetbikes.

That just doesn’t really sit right with me. 10th appears to be a pretty free-form army selection. Yes you can take a greater number of Battleline squads/units, but other than being the most effective Objective Holders seen thus far, there’s seemingly no requirement to take Battleline at all. And if it’s just footsloggers that can get pretty tasty buffs from being lead, I fear more exotic units may be edged out again.

Except…new edition, new Codex…new models. And that seems like a solid opportunity for GW to reintroduce more specialist characters. Such as Jump Pack or Bike equipped.

And as the title suggests, what’s your Wishlist here?

What I'm hoping for is that Lt equivalents are a chunk cheaper and can be taken for at least three per slot. I don't care what GW wants, but I'm not going to just willy-nilly attach a Lt. to an Intercessor squad because funsies.

It might be nice for Eldar exarchs to be bumped up to minor characters (again) to let them work independently. They could still be stuck in squads to act as beefy squad leaders, but give them a little more flex and power.

Related note: all the harli characters that were squad updates in some editions, characters in others. What will happen with them?

You can take 3 of any datasheet so not a problem there unless you're thinking 6 or 9 primaris LTs?

A spot where this might be nice are warlocks for Eldar. Which used to be taken in one slot and then distributed to units. As they used to be taken as squad leader types, an exception to the rule of 3 might be nice.

I wonder how this will work for tyranids? Lot of ways they could go, especially with a range revamp.

Ah, yea. Seems unlikely.

For Thousand Sons I imagine they're going to need a Shaman on foot for Tzaangors unless they do allow that sort of mixing. That or the Shaman is an aura guy.

It feels really weird for my sorcerers to join Rubrics / Scarabs so I'm curious how that will pan out.

Will Daemon Princes just be Lone Operative? Or will it be vehicles protecting them only?

Maybe we'll finally get the generic jump Cannoness/ Palatine back.

Maybe Dracons, and Wych/ Coven LTs.

Yeesh. A reason to take standard infantry and less than an hour later its time to start hunting for reasons not to 'edge out' more exotic units?

Exactly my thoughts. I take any reason to make basic infantry useful

Somehow I feel like Devs and other heavier units won't have an option to pick up characters. Lethal Hits on grav? Eugh. Since this LT can't join the missile daddies then it seems like a given.

Some Assault Intercessors with a TH sarge and Lethal Hits sounds decent enough though - especially when it can be a SS LT with Artificier Armor taking the hits. Allocate at your own risk though.

Right now the Skitarii Marshal is, effectively, what they would consider this whole LT grade. Hopefully we can see a Ranger LT, a Sicarian LT, etc.

Hopefully all of these LT equivalent/support unit things will be 1-2 per slot though. They specifically call out Warlock and Biophagus as being this vein.

That's not going to happen. Why would you use that with Intercessors when Bladeguard are listed? Hell, even for the Manlet Lt. when choosing to go with just Sternguard?

Standard infantry will not be benefitting unless HQs take a major price cut.

I don't think a price cut changes that dynamic. There's just going to be a lot of factors that will have to considered before this is a done deal.

A lieutenant's lethal hits is much more beneficial on intercessors than bladeguard. You are going to get a lot more use of the ability on a long range unit. Also bladeguard are more likely to wound in most cases so the ability helps them less.
I would argue that a lieutenant with bladeguard is a bit of a waste with what we know. But hard to say until we have more info

Paladin Ancient can join units of termintors. Grand Masters, Brother Captins and Librarians can join squad of terminators. Terminator Apothecaries can join terminator unit. And technmarines either get cover from dreadnoughts or can join them to form a unit.

Kind of a place the Necron Royal Warden would fit, rather than being an actual HQ choice on its own.

A Imperial Guard Sentinel 'officer' is something I've seen mentioned before too, and makes sense in terms of how the Guard is organized.

While there are lots of things we might wish to have, I don't image GW going on any mission to produce more mobile characters to lead units. Not producing them provides an interesting contrast between the Infantry units that can be lead and the specialist who cannot. Properly applied buffs from leaders just might be enough to put some of those line troopers into list in place of the most efficient, mobile units being chased around by some character yelling at them to fight harder.

This is one of the changes I like the least. In 8th, commanders at least felt like commanders, leading armies. Now, we're back to glorified sergeants/death star components, I see. I mean, if would be fine if you could attach stuff like lesser apothecaries, SW wolfwolf dudes, or eldar warlocks, but chapter masters/farseers/necron lords welded to one squad and being fixated just on it being unable to affect anything else is just stupid.

And what about characters such as chapter champion or chaplain? Do they count as 'lesser' (hello, death stars) or are they exclusive to captains and the like, making your own bodyguard and spiritual advisor being magically unable to approach you if you have anyone around? And to make the change even dumber, the article even says half of the characters (giving example of IH captain) continues to function like before, being unable to join anything - why even make the change then?

Voss wrote:

Unless you like gravis/phobos. Then you have almost nothing to attach to these thanks to incompetent clown writing primaris last two editions. Gravis chaplain to lead aggressors? Gravis apothecary to help heavy intercessors? Phobos chaplain to lead reivers? Any phobos character at all with power weapon? Gravis Lt helping anything? Phobos apothecary who isn't just useless trainee? Phobos Lt without comically stupid, backward gear opposite to their intended role? That would make sense so it's verboten, naturlich

Ideally, you'd have phobos/gravis/bike versions of every primaris character to represent various companies, but after 6 years of sabotage, I won't be holding my breath...

Some characters only gain the Lone Operative ability when taking shelter near an appropriate unit – such as when Iron Father Feirros is working on an allied VEHICLE, or Lion El’Jonson is near a unit of ADEPTUS ASTARTES INFANTRY. Such heroes tend to benefit their comrades without Leading them, perhaps through Aura abilities that boost nearby allies.

Please read the article. Auras still exist, they just don't exist for everyone.

I would like to add oddboyz to lots of units, and have them form up their own units. The boss needs a personal physician, and the dreadmob needs a mad dok and bad mek. I'm pretty sure we'll get runtherds leading grots (where's my snotlings and runtbots though? they are sorely missed) Apart from that, stormboyz and kommando captains please!

I don't see any reason to take a Canoness ever now...

Not even the much wanted flying Canoness.

So imo it actually linits character options.

For Orks I'd like to see a Kaptin-type character. Something with Banner Nob stats that can lead Nobs, Meganobs and Boys-derived units.

You could also have a version for Snagga units.

Perhaps these boss nobs could unlock klan kultures for orks or bring some of those obscure abilities granted by klan strategems into 10th.

Tough Tyrant Guard

I'm really looking forward to how GW tries to solve the jank that Hive Tyrants joining Tyrant Guard. Monster joining infantry, that are specifically designed to guard the monster. How will anti-monster & anti-infantry work against this unit? (Assuming they go back to their 4th/5th/6th/7th style bodyguard rule)

I suspect they'll make it so specifically walking Hive Tyrants get lone operator protection around tyrant guard alone. Otherwise maybe tyrant guard go up to monster status to smooth it out.

Nids ones interest me in general:

New shrike guy = gargoyles and maybe shrikes if they exist
Prime = warriors and maybe gaunts of whatever flavour?
Tyrant on foot = Tyrants guard only, maybe?
Flyrant = nada
Swarm lord = maybe tyrant guard?
Brood lord = genestealers
Neurothrope = zoanthropes
Big brain guy = ????
Parasite = gargoyles again?

Oddly I can see venomthropes become attachments to units instead of a distinct unit.
