Hail all:
I am an old (NON!!! TableTop) Pen and Paper Warhammer (NON!!!! 40K) player.
Never played WH40K.
Did play other RP's, like:
Earthdawn (my first love and favourite).
Shadowrun.
D&D.
AD&D.
Auge des Meisters.
5 Rings.
and several others, but never 40K.
Now, I bumped many a time into the 40K lineage of Warhammer, and I begin to become interested.
I ordered a few books (Core and such), but in the meantime, I would like to ask a few things:
I came across terminologies like:
- Angels (Blood Angels, Angels of Defiance, Angels this, and Angels that.
What are "Angels", what does it stand for?
Flying Brigades?
- Adeptus: Adeptus Arbites, Adeptus Mechanica, and more Adeptus.
I would assume, these are Adept classes of sorts?
- Administratum: Most likely just that, like Apothecarium = drug dealers (Medicine men, lmao) ans Astra Militarum = Military Among the Stars (or Heading for the stars or so)?
If not, what does Adeptus stand for?
- Navis Nobilite: Noble Navy?
Or is it a ship?
- Crux Terminatus: Honour Terminators?
- Lexicanum is an encyclopedia?
Sounds like evil.
- Aquila = Eagle ... what does it represent?
It is interesting, that Latin seems a fairly dominant language in WH40K.
But it's not always clear, what it means in a Role Play.
Often, I came onto terminologies that mean something, but then is used entirely different in that RP. :S
Makes it a bit confuzzeling.
Thank you.
Xog.

There’s no reason to assume that a name like angels has anything to do with its function. If you see something named “tartaros pattern” it doesn’t mean it is underground or penal. They are only mascots, a colorful name instead of a serial number.
Good luck

It's just a cool name for a bunch of super soldiers who often walk among lesser men as angels of death.
- Adeptus: Adeptus Arbites, Adeptus Mechanica, and more Adeptus.
I would assume, these are Adept classes of sorts?
Adeptus Arbites = Police
Adeptus Mechanica = The caste and cult that works with machines
- Administratum: Most likely just that, like Apothecarium = drug dealers (Medicine men, lmao) ans Astra Militarum = Military Among the Stars (or Heading for the stars or so)?
Apothecarium = Medics often times the battlefield sort
Astra Militarum = The main military force of the Imperium of Mankind, also known as the Imperial Guard or just the Guard
- Crux Terminatus: Honour Terminators?
It's a medal given to those worthy of donning the rare and powerful Terminator armor.
- Aquila = Eagle ... what does it represent?
The Imperial symbol is the aquila.
It's probably worth skimming the wikis for more detail.

Welcome!
First of all, I Recommend you check out one of the various fan wikis out there as they can answer terminology questions faster and easier than we can. That said, let me see if I can help you out:
Angels: Can refer to lots of different things in 40k. *Usually* this gets associated with space marines who are sometimes referred to as the Emperor's angels. A couple of the original space marine legions have "angels" in their names (Blood Angels and Dark Angels), and a couple of the primarchs either had "angel" as part of their nicknames (Angron) or were generally angelic (Sanguinius).
Flying Brigade: That's a new one to me. What's the context? Sounds like a term an imperial guard player would use to describe a list with lots of flying units.
Adeptus: "Adeptrus" is essentially just fancy faux-latin meaning "organization" or "order" or "department" or what have you. So the adeptus mechanicus is the organization composed of the mechanicus (the mechanics/tech priests), the adeptus astartes are the organization of the astartes (space marines), etc.
Administratum: The "administration", essentially. The big bureaucratic body of the imperium of man.
Navis Nobilite: This is a fancy Harry Potter latin term for the navigator houses. Navigators are a specific type of (more or less) true-breeding mutants who allow human ships to travel through the warp relatively safely. (Emphasis on relatively.) It's a fancier, more polite way of saying, "Those freaky mutants with three eyes."
Crux Terminatus: If memory serves, this refers to the component in terminator armor that provides them with a forcefield. Supposedly, each crux terminatus contains a shard of the Emperor's own armor.
Lexcinum: In-universe, I think it's some sort of database or document. IRL, it's the name of one of those fan wikis you should check out.
Aquila: Two-headed eagle, yeah. It's the main symbol of the imperium of man. Different meanings get ascribed to it depending on who you ask. The main ones I've heard are:
A.) The two head represent the imperium and the mechanicus and how they're tight-knit allies despite technically being semi-distinct political entities.
B.) Something about the one without an eye being blind to the future or past while the other one looks ahead or something. I dunno.

ATTENTION. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.

There's 30+ years of lore and background readily available online. I would suggest taking a holiday from work for a.month and watching YouTube videos for days.
Leutin09 has a huge collection of videos on all the topics you mentioned here.

The term "angels" isn't just a cool name for Marines. They are literally considered heavenly beings by the general populace of the Imperium sent by the Emperor to protect them. WE know they aren't but to the layman Imperial citizen (including Guardsmen) they are literal instruments of the Emperor. Despite the fact that the GW fluff has them turn up for every fight in a pub car park a vast majority of Imperial citizens have no idea that they actually exist.
As to everything else, GW loves its pig latin. Aside from the aquila which is an actual thing dating back to the romans.

You keep referring to WH40K as a Roleplaying Game and it isn't that. It's a tabletop wargame. There are RPGs set in the universe, but if you are referring to WH40K as an RP game, I think you are a little off the mark.

Literal angels like biblical angels. Space marines are seen like demi gods in the eyes of simple human beeing. so they are venerated as angels send by the emperor to save them (well... the the outcome might be different)
Xogroroth wrote:
- Adeptus: Adeptus Arbites, Adeptus Mechanica, and more Adeptus.
they are different administational structures. A little bit like different ministries.
Adeptus Arbites = police stuff
Adeptus Mechanicus = tech stuff
Adeptus Ministorum = religious stuff
Adeptus Administratum = office stuff
...
Xogroroth wrote:

Adeptus administratum is an adeptus.
Astra militarium is a fancy name for the imperial guard because GW counldn't copyright 'imperial guard'
Xogroroth wrote:
- Navis Nobilite: Noble Navy?
These are the houses of navigators. special kind of mutant necessary for warp travel.
A little bit like dune.
Xogroroth wrote:
- Crux Terminatus: Honour Terminators?
this is the cross on the left shoulder of a tactical dreadnough armor (or short terminator armor). In contains a small splinter of the armor of the emperor and confers some kind of protection. (in game terms: an invulnerable save)
Xogroroth wrote:

yes & yes
Xogroroth wrote:
- Aquila = Eagle ... what does it represent?
it is an two headed eagle representing the unification of terra (the emperor) and the mechanicum from mars (for which the emperor is the omnissiah = god)

The dominant language is high gothic - a language they never elaborated. instead they use latin sounding phrases to emulate that.
Feel free to use latin if you have charakters feeling highly noble or academic. Otherwise they speak "low gothic" which is any language you are normaly talking in.
Hope this helps a bit.
