So, I am jumping on the LI bandwagon.....

I never played Epic, I always wanted to but the models didn't really appeal to me at the time. Then Titanicus came out and I loved the models and bought the big starter set but they have sat in a cupboard since....

When Legions Imperialis came out it piqued my interest and my gaming group have gone full in with it so I thought "why not?". The starter set seemed reasonable, the minis themselves I am still not sure on.

However, now I have started them I can maybe see why they are not as cheap as I thought they would be, they are super detailed (but possibly more than they need to be?) and are lovely little kits.

I started with the Astartes but couldn't resist trying some tanks first as I now the infantry will be the most basic of paint jobs.

So, so far I have just finished 10 very tiny Rhinos and made a start on 4 also very tiny Kratos.

I have to say, I'm having fun with them although I didn't particularly enjoy the building process. It's also mind boggling that these mini minis are quicker to paint than they are to assemble....

Terrible pics but the 4 Kratos are done.

Gonna have to start the infantry next.

Assuming you'll be painting on the sprue like the rest of us? Those pieces are so tiny!

Yeah, can't think of a better way to do it tbh. I will take the command squads off and glue them to lolly sticks, and assemble the missile launchers on the sprues but otherwise painting on sprue seems the only way to do it tbh.

Gonna be weird for me though, have never painted on sprue before.....

I'm doing the base coat with the airbrush on sprues, but I remove the minis from the sprues to do the details. Seems like a good compromise.

Love your Kratos, especially the look of the tracks. Which colors did you use ?

Actually, that is a good idea. might to do that too.

The tracks were actually very basic tbh. Just simply a coat of Leadbelcher followed by a wash which is 1 part Nuln Oil, 1 part Agrax Earthshade and 2 parts Lahmian Medium. That's the old version of the GW shades though, once I run out of them Army Painter Quickshades or Two Thin Coats washes should achieve the same result.

I’ve belted through my Dark Angels, painting on sprue. I found it handy to break the sprues down. I’ve attached pics which will hopefully provide a decent visual aid.

First it’s a simple split to expose the Missile Launcher equipped guys, and make it easy to glue them (I’ve also assembled the Dreadnoughts, gluing them to their base at this point)

Once base sprayed, I broke the sprues down further so I’m working on single strips of infantry. I did do that in so far as is possible with the layout into unit types, but that’s not necessary overall.

You’ll notice the Command models are a pain in the bum, as they’re the only models to “double side” with others. To prevent smudging when the paints were drying I used blobs of blutak to hold the cut down Sprues vertically.

Oh, and the Assault Marines need a little extra, as two or three break the overall design and have two points where they attach to the sprue.

@Mad Doc Grotsnik - cheers, that's actually super helpful. I didn't think about the dreads so have started building those first just to get them off the sprue, but will then pretty much copy what you have done for the infantry. They are soooo tiny.....

Looks like you're off to a decent start with the motor pool, StraightSilver - nice use of white panels for a bit more visual interest. Are they meant to be command vehicles?

Cheers, actually really enjoying painting the tiny tanks so might go armour heavy as I build up the army.

And yes, the white panels are command vehicles which is also how I mark my 30k vehicles.

The original plan was to paint the tiny tanks with exactly the same white panels as my 32mm ones but painting white on this scale is no fun at all so I'm adding the odd white panel but not to the extent I normally do.

But at least I'll be able to tell on the tabletop which vehicles are leading the detachment.

Small (pun intended) updated, but I forgot to take pics of the infantry.

I now have 998 points painted and had my first game against World Eaters - short review, it's a brutal game, things move unexpectedly fast and World Eaters are terrifying in close combat. My Ultras were slaughtered. However, I learned that my best CC unit is my Kratos..... I need way more infantry..... troops shouldn't stay in tanks..... Predators and Sicarans are ace.....

More painting progress. I decided to go the lolly stick route painting infantry, it's way easier than on-sprue. Predators are done except decals and tank commander. I also realise I really like tanks and want more.....

Here's the infantry so far. Nothing special though, decided a quick wash and dry brush was plenty for these as I reckon I'll be painting a lot more of them.
