I fell into a bit of a trap last year, hoarding a load of sprues and developing a pretty big pile of shame. Then I sold it all to start over. I'm attacking the problem head on with a new plan - an overcomplicated excel spreadsheet.

It's a bit like the pile of potential website except I've tweaked it to match my own preferences. My idea is to build EVERYTHING I buy as soon as possible so it's not sat there on a sprue for all time. Then I'll make my way through the different phases - prime, drybrush, paint, base and - please any spiritual deities out there, give me strength - actually play the game.

This is where I'll document the process - I'm going to try and do something every day but more likely I'll end up doing nothing for a few days and then sit down for a few hours to make a chunk of progress.

My Ork Combat Patrol arrived in the post this morning so I spent an hour building the two Boss Nob models. Next up is all the Boyz!

All the best ork armies start out as an overcomplicated excel spreadsheet. So it sounds like you are on the right track.

Looking forward to the progress.

Thanks! I'm calling my process 'the convey-ork belt method' - pretty sure it's a world first. I'd be building the models a lot faster but getting all of the mould lines off takes a long time!

4 more Boyz done today - for some reason my ability at taking pictures is decaying. Will have to work on that!

Remember to drill your gun barrels

Get some mane! Boyz are looking good - haven't really seen too much of the new sculpts honestly but they are super dynamic looking minis.

Little steps lead to big journeys. Looking forward to following your progress!

They're pretty cool but not much room for variation - in a unit of 20 (or 19 minus the boss nob) you'd essentially have 4 of each pose if you were just doing sluggas and choppas in the new sculpt. My plan is to mix in 10 models from the old multi-pose boyz to add more than enough variety at a glance!

Thanks! I'm going to post more sporadic updates but with more models in them or else I think there's going to be 20 pages of just grey plastic before anything fun actually happens

Here's my first big batch update:

I've been trying to build 1 or 2 models per day, though it's not exactly easy when a lot of the older models have an insane amount of mould lines to remove. I also had to sculpt the hair off a few heads as I don't think it looks right on Orks and I had to take my time with that as I was just carving directly into the plastic.

I picked up the old Big Mek w/ Kustom Force Field model and it took days to get all the contact points removed and neatened up. After another post where I asked what other people were using as grot tokens, someone suggested I pick up a 2nd Ed. model and, with a couple of tweaks, I'm really happy with how it looks. The story is that he's holding the gun for the Big Mek (the model doesn't have a slugga) and if he ever misses it's because the grot took some of the bullet out!

I finished up my first 20 man squad of Boyz, after I'd put together the new sculpts I started building out the remainder of the squad with the old Boyz models. A lot of mould lines. When I got to 15 models finished, I needed a bit of a break so I started to build some other stuff. After a couple of days just looking at the unit, I wanted to create a bit more height variation so bought the Nobz from the Black Reach set. They basically just look like bigger Boyz with the same slugga / choppa loadout and - in my mind - Orks continue to grow in size the longer they stay alive so these Boyz are one good scrap away from becoming Nobz themselves.

At the same time I picked up the Black Reach Nobz, I also snagged the Warboss NOS for £10! One AoS squigg later and I've got my own Warboss w/ Attack squig. I'm still going to get the other model for my 2nd unit of 20 Boyz but I'm happy to have 2 different models.

What else is there... aah yes, my Gretchin and Runtherd. Not much to say with these really, I didn't build the Runtherd with the Squig only because seeing it next to the much newer sculpt just didn't look right. I think the old Ork models have held up against the newer ones but the poor little squig has not.

Finally I've got the Mozrog model done. I decided not to put the big banner / plate thing on the back because a) it's a snakebites symbol and I want to create my own clan and b) the scultping on the back of this model is really cool and it seems a shame to hide it away! I also took off the slobber from the jaws of the squig as it reminded me of my slobbery dog and I'm always slipping over in her drool.

Next up I'm trying to decide whether I should build another 20 Boyz or put together 20 Beast Snagga Boyz - one sprue of the new sculpy models then 10 of the old boyz which I'd convert to look more... beasty
