I saw it. The story isn't bad and Denzel is a great actor.

The main actor however is a emotionless block of wood. They had to have dialog say over and over and over that he was full of rage. They had to tell because the actor was incapable of showing.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

Nah, let him know if he doesn't choose either that MDG is going to be forced watch his favourite actor, Jared Leto, in his own take on the Nutty Professor, and he plays all the characters which runs on loop for 24 hours straight xD. That'll make him choose!

At least Rise of an Empire isn’t pretentious crap. And the leads have some form of charisma.

Saw it about a week ago, and it was as good as the first which I still remember seeing at the pictures back in 2000.

The only thing that stood out - and something I actually enjoyed - was the animated animals. As much as I love Harryhausen-like movies, Gladiator was clearly meant to be as real as if Ridley had "caught it all on camera", and I can't recall much of the 2000 film standing out as much as this.

YOU IS NOT MY MUMS, I NO REMEMBER MUMS. Romans are smell I am nots a Romans.

J/K Mums, you is my Mums. I can has ring now?

Suppose I am savings Rome now. Because reasons.

His actions and motivations are just crap. And don’t get me started on Denzel’s decision, just as all his plans have pretty much worked, riding out to stand between the two armies about to get into it, well within bow shot, for no readily apparent reason

History Buffs recently posted a short bit on Gladiating II. History Buffs is a channel where they talk about historical media and how it lines up with actual history while also recognizing that narrative conceits are a part of storytelling. To put it simply he hated it.

I thought he enjoyed the original even though it was terrible from a historical standpoint whereas this one was disliked on both fronts? It has been a long time since I watched the episode covering Gladiator so I may be remembering it wrong. I'm sure we'll find out when he does the episode covering this.

I did not expect historical accuracy, so I am not judhing G2 for that.

But this was bad. It seemed that the film-makers were only concerned about getting the plot happen, which would be commendable, if the plot was good and made some sense, which it didn't.

Lead characters motivation seemed to change constantly, whilst other characters had so flat motivations it was comical. Except I suppose Macrinus, he had slight degree of complexity and mystery there, I give them that. Not much, but hey, there is something.

There was only one good line of dialogue, from some guy named Vergilius. They should have let him write the rest of the movie too.

However, biggest problem for me was directing. Remember Star Wars Prequels? Wish I had not reminded you of them? Well this was same level effort. All the scenes were just completely flat and rushed, with no focus, actors appearing unmotivated. None of the fight scenes were good. Opening battle scene was silly. I may not be biggest fan of the original Gladiator, but it was well directed movie. This was not.

Movie Review: Gladiator 2 – A Triumph Over Its Predecessor

In a cinematic landscape where sequels often falter, Gladiator 2 emerges as a dazzling beacon of excellence, effortlessly overshadowing its predecessor, the original Gladiator. While the first film is often hailed as a classic, it pales in comparison to the sheer brilliance of this new installment. From acting to plot, fight scenes, and historical accuracy, Gladiator 2 redefines what a sequel can achieve.

Acting: A Masterclass in Performance

The performances in Gladiator 2 are nothing short of extraordinary. Paul Mescal, stepping into the lead role, delivers a tour de force that makes Russell Crowe’s portrayal in the first film seem like a mere shadow. Mescal’s emotional depth and range are unparalleled, capturing the audience's hearts with every scene. His portrayal of Lucius, the son of Lucilla, is layered and complex, showcasing a character grappling with legacy and ambition.

Opposite him, the legendary Denzel Washington brings gravitas to the role of a seasoned gladiator turned mentor, infusing the film with a commanding presence that elevates every interaction. The chemistry between Mescal and Washington is electric, creating moments that resonate long after the credits roll. The supporting cast, including the talented Florence Pugh as Lucilla, shines brightly, transforming what could have been a standard sequel into a rich tapestry of human experience. Pugh’s performance is both fierce and vulnerable, adding depth to the political intrigue surrounding her character. In contrast, the first film’s performances often felt one-dimensional, with characters that lacked the complexity and development that Gladiator 2 so effortlessly provides.

Plot: A Gripping Narrative

The plot of Gladiator 2 is a masterfully woven narrative that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats. It delves into themes of redemption, power, and betrayal with a sophistication that the original film could only dream of. While the first Gladiator meandered through a predictable revenge story, the sequel introduces unexpected twists and turns that elevate the narrative to new heights. The character arcs are meticulously crafted, allowing viewers to invest emotionally in their journeys. In stark contrast, the original’s plot felt like a tired rehash of familiar tropes, lacking the originality and depth that Gladiator 2 brings to the table.

Epic Naval Battle: A Cinematic Spectacle

One of the standout moments in Gladiator 2 is the epic naval battle that unfolds with breathtaking intensity. This sequence is a visual feast, showcasing not only the scale of the conflict but also the strategic brilliance of the characters involved. The cinematography captures the chaos and grandeur of the battle, immersing the audience in the heart of the action. It’s a scene that redefines what audiences can expect from historical epics, leaving the original film’s battle sequences feeling small and uninspired by comparison.

Lifelike CGI Animals: A New Standard in Visual Effects

Adding to the film's groundbreaking achievements is the use of CGI animals that are so lifelike, they blur the line between reality and fiction. The attention to detail in the animation is astounding, with creatures that move and behave as if they were real. This level of realism enhances the immersive experience, drawing viewers deeper into the world of Gladiator 2. In contrast, the original film’s special effects, while impressive for their time, now seem dated and less convincing. The seamless integration of these digital animals into the narrative showcases the advancements in technology and storytelling that Gladiator 2 embraces.

Historical Accuracy: A Respectful Tribute

In terms of historical accuracy Gladiator 2 takes great care to honor the complexities of the era it portrays. The filmmakers have clearly done their homework, presenting a narrative that feels authentic and respectful to the historical context. This attention to detail is a stark contrast to the first film, which, while entertaining, often took liberties with historical facts for the sake of drama. Gladiator 2 not only entertains but also educates, providing viewers with a richer understanding of the time period.

Conclusion: A New Classic

In conclusion, Gladiator 2 is a monumental achievement that eclipses the original in every conceivable way. From its stellar performances by Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, and Florence Pugh to its gripping plot, breathtaking fight scenes, epic naval battle, lifelike CGI animals, and historical accuracy, this film is a testament to the power of storytelling in cinema. While the first Gladiator may have been a cultural touchstone, Gladiator 2 is the true masterpiece that will be remembered for generations to come. It’s time to put the original on the shelf and embrace the brilliance of this new chapter in the saga.
