Subject: Dark/Light Alliance: 1/72 Scale Fantasy Miniatures
I originally posted about these in the Toys for Wargaming thread, but it was smartly suggested by some that it should have its own thread, so here it is. First, a link to an unboxing video talking about the products:
The TL;DR is basically that these models are inexpensive fantasy models that are generic enough to use for a number of miniatures-agnostic wargames. Several of the sets are clearly derived from Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy, but others are far more generic. There are even some modern zombies and survivors that could be useful in a post-apocalyptic game like This Is Not A Test. I personally think these would be great for prototyping a homebrew ruleset of some variety, and I even found a nice free simple ruleset on Wargame Vault that these might be perfect for: https://www.wargamevault.com/product/335550/Ultra-Simple-Games--Fantasy-Battles?src=newest&filters=0_40202_40013_44510_0
I might grab a few sets just for shiggles, but I'm not sure I've got time these days to develop my own game, and I'm not sure I can easily convince a lot of the locals in my area to pick up an indie ruleset as they mostly want to play the various GW games or Star Wars Legion.
My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

Well good news is one box is basically one sprue for the war trolls. And it looks like there are 3 different sets of Wartrolls. So 3 boxes is 12 unique war trolls.
EDIT: There are 4 sets but one set is "War trolls for catapult" and I kind of think they dont match the other sets.
Here is Plastic soldier review's page on all the Dark alliance sets.

I got my start in true miniature gaming when I bought 1:72 (I think) scale WW2 minis to go with my micromachines because they were cheaper and I kept losing the expensive micromachine soldiers in the dirt of my backyard.
We've been using1/72 stuff for fantasy and sci fi for ages - chck out this battle report, 1/72 orcs and "ratmen" from Caesar / Miniknight vs WW1 & Napoleonics with various papercraft & scratchbuilt vhicles.. and the Incredible Hulk making a cameo...
There's allot of historical ranges that are very useful for fantasy and sci Fi gaming.
Tons of options for fantasy humans from ancients through medieval.
As a kid I had a bunch of modern, and Cold War/Vietnam 1/72 figs that were the troops in my sci Fi toy play. Ertl, ESCI, Airfix, etc figures along side my Matchbox size vehicles and Robotech toys.
Then you can start down the rabbit hole of 1/72 model kits and compatible toys....

Basically "heroic" 1/72, they're obviously fine for BA and with a little conversion make excellent Guardsmen, Cultists etc. We've done a bit of this - I'll post links if anyone wants to see them scale with regular 40k stuff

Those look quite nice and being hard plastic they're be much easier to convert. 40k in 20mm would be an interesting project.
They will not work with 28mm minis in general, but perhaps RT/2E Marines might scale with them.

Sometimes I wish I'd not built huge collections in 28mm, because 10mm or 20mm would be so much easier to store, and so much cheaper!
Love your stuff Skinflint, your blog was a big inspiration for me to actually get back to wargaming after years of just painting and playing roleplaying games.

Fair made my day, that! Cheers Da Boss, perhaps I could interest you in a little playtesting? DM me if you're interested :-)

I got my 3 boxes today. Wargs and then 2 sets of musketeers (Cardinal's guards and King's musketeers.)
The Wargs are slightly bigger than the 28mm dogs I have (zombicide and malifaux). So will work well as armored war dogs. Picture is of them next to the 2 dogs and next to a Dark Sword miniatures duelist.
As a bonus (but not related to Dark/Light Alliance) Are a couple pics of the musketeers. I saw a review that says they can come in different colors and that the gray or brown is the best... so looks like I got unlucky with the red and blue... But I like them. I am thinking they may be a gnome army in my pathfinder game.

@Smokestack how big is the base that duellist is on? I ask because I'm wondering how well those Wargs scale with MESBG Wargs, which go on 40mm bases

The wargs have that molded on saddle.. do you think that might be an issue? I cannot imagine the heck pain it would take to trim it off, but at the same time, they LOOK like they need riders.. or they are rushing to battle and somewhere the riders are running along to catch up with the mounts..
