£3 grand? That isn't a full rewiring. Do you mean chases cut into all the walls and ceilings, new fuse box(es), new circuits, modern number of plugs, etc? I was looking at £6-8 grand for a three bed flat done to the councils spec.

If it is the full monty I would suggest getting the option wired up to have an electric car charging system set up later if needed. There is a bit of tom foolery to be done with the fuse system and circuits to later accommodate it.

Also ask a solar panel install company what they need to plug into your network and setting it up to make that easy.

Oh and consider while everything is open (the chases, floorboards, etc.) laying shielded Lan cables. They can go near but not on electric cables and will give you option of very fast home network (both my brother and I have retrofitted dwellings with cables behind skirting boards but it is a massive faff).

How much asbestos is likely to be about? Such a wonder material…

Same with shiny black. The people we got our house from left us ultra shiny black kitchen floor tiles, and low level lighting. All it ever does is look filthy. And we have a dog.

Honestly we went with a wood-effect tile floor in the kitchen. It fits the house, but also "hides" a lot of casual dust and dirt by virtue of the wooden grain effect. So you don't have be neurotic about cleaning to keep it looking good.

Mostly wooden flooring in the place, and I’ve some rugs to my taste.

It is going to take a while for me to recognise that I can actually decorate to my tastes. The legacy of renting for around 15 years.

Same with the garden really. It’s not big, but it is a usable space. So I’ll be needing patio furniture.

These folk are clever. Sent me the account payment details in the post. Stops thieving gits hacking the email. I’ve dealt with that sort of case before. It’s not pleasant.

The actual move itself should be child’s play. Book the removal, with the packers coming the day before the actual move to pack. I can make myself scarce for that bit, as I’ve a hair appointment, and need to go to the estate agent to get my key.

I’ll get on to the energy/internet company tomorrow, see if I can start arranging the switchover. I’m also a few hundred quid in credit on my electricity, so I’ll be having that back.

But, on account my landlord has done No Repairs for around two years? I’m giving my notice here as late as I possibly can. And taking the whole two months. Hopefully cold, wet, miserable months. With no heating. Winds all locked and bolted. Get that extra bit of decay in, during the period he’s not allowed access. He wants to play silly buggers? He’ll find out I’m the silliest bugger in the game.

Now is also the time to rationalise my stockpile of stuff. All my paperback Discworld down the charity shop, as I upgraded to a uniform hardback collection. Chuck out old guff I’ve not touched since the last move, as it’s clearly not important.

Also get my painted models out the cabinets ready for transportation. Old Magic cards to my friends that still play.

Also need to start sniffing around local carpenters. New place has two patches of wall between chimney breasts, just screaming out for proper, bespoke bookcases. Nothing too fancy of course, but better than free standing ones.

I’m well made up it’s all coming to a close. It’s not been stress stressful, but I’m a man that likes to know what’s happening and when. And I’m astute enough to count myself incredibly lucky it’s all gone smoothly.

Oh yeah. And contact the builder, see if I can get the roof replacement arranged and done before winter.

And start bothering Labrador owners in the street as to where they got their Pup from.

WAIT THE HECK - whilst I'm all for passing on awesome books to new people; darn it man you're forgetting! Those paperbacks are ideal to dip into when you don't want to harm your hardback collection and your e-reader is out of power




ALSO get a spreadsheet (googlesheets/excel) and make sure you mark every box with a unique code/marker/name and write down what the heck is inside it!! Otherwise when you move you'll forget where half the stuff is
