Strongpoint - This is the rock upon your foes will break. When lines waiver, they hold firm. When raiders come, this is the place of refuge. This can be a piece of terrain, like a bunker, castle, wall segment or part of a fortification. It could be a unit known for its toughness, like ogres, giants, terminators, or heavy intercessors. Or it could be a single model, like a paladin who’s faith and shield protect the innocent.

SURPRISE! - Stealthy troops, cavalry reserves, guerrilla fighters, etc. These models don’t work in a straight forward manor. The come from odd angles, from the shadows, other dimensions. Like the Spanish Inquisition, nobody expects them. Your entry should be something that exemplifies the element of surprise.

Ancients - Anything old: for example: Elves, mummies, venerable dreadnoughts, dinosaurs, Dante, crones, bearded sages, wizened elders. Space marine banner bearers also hold this title. Or for a more meta standpoint, a model from the depths of time. Early sculpts, actual lead models, minis steeped in history. Or personally, (and most importantly) anything that has been in your pile of shame or primed pile for multiple years.

Victory Points - Generals, wizards, psykers, every Devastator squad's sergeant, they also serve who only stand and point - miniatures whose impact doesn't really involve physical effort on their part. Maybe they've got a holstered pistol on their hip, but it's their index finger that matters to the course of the battle. Sure mages say they're expending tremendous effort, but they're just standing there muttering and waggling their hands around really. The polar opposite of "Don't call me 'sir', I work for a living," judge them not by the perspiration of their skin but by the content of their cranium. Swords or rods of office would also work as long as they are being used for pointing, and not for fighting.

Hard one. I've gone for surprise as I feel it suits Luke and Han in stormtrooper armour from episode IV

I voted Ancients so I can keep painting Eldar, but happy for Surprise or Victory Points to win. The only one I don't know what I'd do is Strongpoint (though I guess a spartan assault vehicle be okay for that? Just not sure I can get that done in one month). If surprise wins, I've got some really stealthy Raven Guard dark fury squads to paint. It's always a surprise that roaring jetpacks smashing down from the sky can be so stealthy...

Those are all good choices, but I went with Ancients as I can do some Tomb Kings stuff for it.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

Victory Points for me. I have the odd officer in need of a paintjob. But I can find something for the other themes as well.

.. s..o..rry.. f..ello..w.. dhhakkas..khhhh..

I too.. *antique walking stick noises* clicked "ancients".. hhhh..

*closing tomb noises*

W..what was that?! Mr. Em shivered as his two lackey explorers grabbed him by his belt.. trying to shield themselves behind his posture..
"v..vampire?" Explorer #1 cried... "Mummy?!" Explorer #2 followed up..

Mr. Em struck a confident pose, raised his finger and exclaimed.. "This is a challenge for the cryptic-specifications guild!"

option1:
Spoiler:
The voice sounded a lot more orky than humanoid, my dear fellow explorers! But a VERY old one! indeed..

option2:
Spoiler:
The voice was clearly warped trying to fool us, I suspect something of a wizard playing us with wizery games!

option3:
Spoiler:
The voice was distinctly otherworldly, perhaps it came from a warp?

'Ancient' will be doubly appropriate - I've got one more of those 1987 Iron Claw Space Pirates (Nixan), and my back is giving me hell so I'm feeling quite ancient too.

I’m with you on the feeling ancient thing. I’m just a couple weeks shy of getting my half-century service stud implanted in my skull, and feeling every year.

Ancients is the winner for next month, So time to go digging into the Pile of Shame for the old stuff! Surprise! will get a second shot in January.

If eBay doesn't drop the ball, I'll be entering one hell of an "oldie but goodie" entry for Ancients next month

Hmmmm. I’ve got an old fella that’s been one of those intimidating minis that you never get around to. This might be the kick in the arse I need to get on with him.

Really confused as to what to choose for this months subject. I have two that I fancy that might fit the bill but need your thoughts.

1. The Vargskyr …

2. Druanti the Arch Revenant…

Do either of these count as ancients?

Not familiar with either of those. Pics and/or brief descriptions?

I can do pics, but the lore is hazy. The first is the Vargskyr, it’s basically a feral vampire and they can be ancient right? The second is, um, I think it’s a forest spirit of some kind. I reckon forest spirits can live some years…

It’s just, well, last night I worked out how much time it would spend me to paint my current pile of shame. Based on one a month I will get them all done in 19.33333333 years.

Given that… revelation… I’m keen to not use this months theme as an excuse to buy Gandalf the Grey from my local shop. It is imperative I learn to see reason.

Both of those would work.

Anything vampire is good. As are wood spirits.

I’d go with spirit personally. Fits better IMHO.

Spirit it is. I’m keen on that too, I do an awful lot of undead stuff so will be a nice reason to break out some brighter colors! Cheers Nev…

Struggling about in Asmos territory.

I'm still conflicted over either kitbashing an ardboy big boss into a 40k ancient ork (no not a krork, or well maybe a mini-krork then lol)
a rotbringer sorcerer (nurgle)
or a wraithlord (not very original considering its being done often by contenders)

Scarred old orks would work.
Most sorcerers are old, not sure about the rotbringer.
Wraithlords are an easy pick for the month.

Don't wanna go with easy though, I think ill do the Ork, its afterall going to be Norkvember.

YE OLDE ORK, just too slow to have made it for orktober, he's old afterall and moves at the speed of w'ork.
