Hey guys so I recently picked up an air brush and I am looking at paints. I really like the idea of using the dropper bottles for my airbrush, but I'm not thrilled about the idea of having to color match one brand of paint with the other.

Is it worth it to just try and transfer citadel Air paints into a dropper bottle? Or is it easier to just try and color match?

Also I'm just getting into airbrushing, so I'm still new to it. All I have right now in a compressor, hose, and the airbrush. I won't say no to any other advice you might be able to give!

Thanks!

Mask, spraying booth (even a DIY one might do, I've used old shoe boxes myself), and ample supply of airbrush cleaning products are all kind of must.

As for transferring Citadel paints into dropper bottles, just make sure you get bottles which actually seal properly.

Color matching might not be as big of an issue as you'd think. You can usually find something that is close enough to your citadels, so that what you do is you apply the airbrush tone as your "basecoat" and use citadels only for modulating the colour (ie as highlights/shades if we talking typical Eavy Metal style paint jobs).

IME, the main draw in airbush based basecoating is the profound ease in which bright, bold colours (red/yellow/white) can be achieved on a model without spending ages on building up the colour by thin layers, as you'd otherwise have to do with brush painting. You still need to apply the airbrush in stages, but you dont need to wait for the layers to dry so its not the same.. You can get a perfect "citadel" matched paint coat easily just by airbrushing on the "close enough" colour in, and then painting over it lightly with diluted citadel paint - the end result will look great in terms of paint thickness and with the top citadel layer, should blend in great with your existing citadel painted stuff (well, it might look more "professional" in terms of finish but yeh)

Quick question, do you still spray prime (with a spray can primer) a model before airbrushing it?

Yes.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

I use an airbrush spray on primer.
